Ohtori-san,

Well met to you and yours.

I write to you to request a Search. The item in question, I am told, is a Dimensional Artifact. To my best knowledge, none other than yourself possesses the ability for this undertaking. I ask that above all, this Search be kept discreet, and that no breach of confidentiality occur. If that is unacceptable, please do not read further, and destroy this message.

I wish you to Search for something absolutely vital to the Kingdom of Everblue. Forty-two years ago, a theft occurred in our Kingdom's domain. The item taken was a ring. It was large, but deceptively slim, and held a red stone that, when worn by the One True Heir of our Kingdom, would shift into an iridescent stone that glowed with a faint blue light.

King Yuudai has now tasked me to recover this ring. Kindly inform me as to what must be done to expedite the Search.

Faithfully yours,
Tezuka Kunimitsu
Advisor, Kingdom of Everblue

Tezuka-san,

Thank you for your request for a Dimensional Artifact Search & Locate. Your request for confidentiality is noted, and all future correspondence on this subject will be encrypted and given the subject line 'Re: Investigation of Kingdom Everblue #19 - Dimensionality Interference'. It is commonplace for us to carry out investigations like these on worlds similar to yours, and such a label is unlikely to arouse unwelcome interest from other parties.

The Director of the Agency, Sakaki Kojirou, has given his approval for this Search & Locate. In order to better facilitate our search we would like to request the following:

a) a detailed written Report of the Circumstances under which the Object in Question disappeared. We are able to dispatch an investigator to your universe to obtain this; however, we charge an extra fee.
b) a detailed Description of the Object, preferably an official Report by a Licensed Evaluator of Magical Objects

We would also like some indication of the urgency of the mission, as an Inter-dimensional Search may take decades to complete.

A tax invoice has been forwarded to the Royal Treasury of Everblue in your universe.

Yours sincerely,
Ohtori Choutarou
Accredited Investigator

Ohtori-san,

Thank you for your prompt response. We appreciate your understanding on the matter of confidentiality. I will attempt to recount the circumstances in which the Artifact disappeared, though I am sorry I cannot attest to its ultimate reliability.

Forty-two years ago, King Yoshihito, father to King Yuudai, celebrated his sixtieth birthday. The royal family has not been particularly noted for longevity, even after accounting for assassinations. On the eve of King Yoshihito's birthday, King Yuudai (then Prince Yuudai) occasioned to be summoned to the Throne Room, where he observed the Artifact. He was proven the One True Heir in the presence of Chief Advisor Ryuuzaki, and the ring removed to the Royal Hold. Two days later, upon a routine inspection and accounting of the Royal Hold's contents, the ring was discovered to be missing. Though the Kindgom has been searched and all jewelers and traders notified of the rather generous reward offered, it has yet to emerge.

The ring first appeared in the reign of King Nanjiroh four hundred and seven years ago. The Royal Archives hold record of a match between King Nanjiroh and a challenger to the throne whose name has been struck from the records. After the match, King Nanjiroh married Queen Rinko, who presented the ring as part of her dowry. The origin of the ring is unknown--it was assumed to be a family heirloom. It turned blue when worn by King Nanjiroh. When Prince Ryoga was born, the ring was presented, but remained steadfastly red, only to turn blue upon the birth of Prince Ryoma, who was crowned King when King Nanjiroh was laid to rest fifty-six years later.

After King Ryoma's coronation, the ring was inspected by a Licensed Evaluator of Magical Objects. Unfortunately, the records for that period have been damaged in a flood in the reign of King Satoshi, and only a partial copy exists now. I have reproduced it below as follows:

... --ood-red stone which at first glance appears to be a ruby, but instead contains traces of aprhi-- ... --rn by the candidate to the throne deemed mos-- ... iridescence of which there is a pale blue light emitted. The ring is otherwise unchanged, bu-- ... --ssible that the ring is a Dimensional Artifact of unkno-- ... --racteristics of an amorphous Artifact, which is anomalous to the known Nature of such Art-- ... --oof that it has remained stable for at least one hundred and sixty-nine years. This indicates that change may-- ... --trongly suggest the Kingdom establish measures to safeguard it, or seek an alternative should the unexpected occur. (signed) Rufus Scrimgeour, Licensed Evaluator of Ma-- ...

I hope the above proves to be of assistance to the Search.

The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated as our Kingdom may not have years; certainly not decades. Again, I must emphasize that this is of the utmost secrecy. King Yuudai's longevity has come into question. While the Office of Advisory is sworn to secrecy, as is the Royal Doctor, it is merely a matter of time before the news is broken. King Yuudai does not have an heir. He fears (as do I) that if the One True Heir is not located swiftly, chaos will descend upon our Kingdom.

Seven hundred and twenty-one years ago, King Kurokaze left no heir when he was laid to rest, and civil war gripped the Kingdom of Everblue for twelve long years until General Hanamura seized control and governed as Regent until the next surviving heir of the royal family was located. Under no circumstances must those twelve years be repeated.

I have received the tax invoice. The amount is a little difficult to conceal at present, but with time the correct funds will be transferred to the Inter-dimensional Treasury. I respectfully ask your forgiveness for the unavoidable delay, and will see to the remittance post-haste.

Yours faithfully,

Tezuka-san,

Your documentation has been received. Thank you for the prompt response.

Our literature search is almost complete. For the time being, we have limited it to databases covering the universes in your section, #29467, as well as the two adjacent sections, #29466 and #29468. It is our experience that a Dimensional Artifact rarely travels beyond its section of origin.

We have identified 19,000 items in 6,970 universes resembling the object of your description. With more stringent criteria applied, we are left with 52 objects in 33 universes with a greater than 1% chance of being the Universe #19 Everblue Inheritance Ring. (These probabilities are based on the premise that the Artifact is stable and will not change its physical properties upon passing between dimensions, which, based on the fragments of the Mr. Scrimgeour's report that you forwarded to us, may not be a reliable assumption).

A full progress report is attached. A summary of the literature is in preparation, and we will begin phase 2 of our Search & Locate protocol within a fortnight.

Sincerely,
Ohtori Choutarou
Accredited Investigator
