The hybrids had some interesting responses to "The Velveteen Rabbit". I can see why they might relate their situation to a toy animal that becomes real, but I thought the best part was their universal surprise that not everyone's pet shop experience had been similar.

I had to smile at the choice of "The Owl and the Pussycat". It was my favorite as a kid and one of the only poems I can still recite from memory. The hybrids have a ways to go before they can appreciate imagination. Their world has been too strict and rule-bound to allow for much play time and I doubt anyone bothered to encourage most of them to imagine.

They all have so much to learn. I think Adam will have an easier time with his group, teaching them about using their imagination, than he would with most other hybrids, who might not ever have been allowed to watch TV or see a movie.

I really loved that poem growing up, and I gave it to a friend's grandchild some years ago. He was too young to read it himself, which I'd expected. I ended up reading it to him, with him sitting on my lap. I'd read a page, and show him the pictures and asked what they were. He identified some of them pretty well. :)

Hee hee, I've a feeling Adam won't be choosing a nonsense poem again for their bookclub readings lol.

The Hobbit! I want them to discuss that book next! :DD

Yeah, what seems like an "easy" might not necessarily be. And the things that appealed to Adam as a child might not appeal to someone raised in very different circumstances.
