small post: going vegetarian?

Aug 13, 2011 16:48

After reading about the pig  and chicken industry, I am thinking about going vegetarian. I like the taste of bacon and all, but it doesn't seem right to continue to eat it after knowing what intensive pig farming looks like in Australia. (sow stalls?)

I could go vegetarian. I like vegetables. My mind has no thoughts now. Anyone reading this ever ( Read more... )

I've been mostly vegetarian for 23 years. I'm pescatarian now, but was a lacto-ovo vegetarian for the first 5 years or so. It was a heath choice as much as an ethical one for me, so I incorporate the things I am comfortable with having and don't really worry about other peoples personal politics ( ... )

I am trying it out for a week. I get eggs from happy chickens as it is so that is all good, xD.

I've been both vegetarian and vegan in the past. Right now I'm neither, but I don't eat meat very often, and when I do, it's only meat I buy myself so that I know that it was produced as ethically as possible.

It can be a great diet, but you have to make sure that you watch your nutrition. A lot of vegetarians I know live on nothing but potatoes and cheese. Not good! Lots of vegetables and fruits, of course, but you want to make sure you get in good sources of protein: beans, quinoa, eggs, and such. You can also buy the "fake" meats made with soy, but I try not to eat those too often because they're usually super-processed and filled with creepy amounts of sodium.

There are some amazing vegetarian food bloggers online that share awesome recipes, too. Oh She Glows has some of my favorite vegan recipes, and you could always use cheese in them to make them vegetarian.

There's lots of research and info out there if you decide to go for it. Maybe start by trying for a week and seeing how you feel after that?

Yes, trying out for a week is a great idea. I am recording the whole process too. I would probably avoid fake meats, even though I do like tofu.

I've also been taking a multi-vitamin when I started doing my teaching prac, because I was petrified at falling sick again.

I was vegetarian for 9 years and vegan for about 1. I am neither now, and i have to admit that i like my meat. ;) I quit meat for the exact reasons that you list there. But in the end it became a health issue for both me and my daughter, and i took the dietist advise that i sought out, and started to eat meat again. Some meat i will just always think is gross i suppose, but i do feel healthier. Don't get me wrong i am all for vegetarian diets, all i am saying is be careful, and make absolutly sure you are getting all the proteins and minerals you need.

Bacon isn't really meat, it's a spice. ;)
