So, smilla02 was talking about drabbles, and it reminded me of how much I used to love them. And then she was lovely enough to give me a prompt ("wind"), and I wrote for her my first drabble in what's got to be well over a year. The title's stolen from Cat Stevens.

Swam Upon the Devil’s Lake

He peels away layers of cotton, tosses them onto the scarred linoleum at his feet.

His branded shoulder burns under his fingertips, shredded nails scrape vicious lines over his chest and he has to remind himself to stop at skin after so many years of stripping down to the bone, cracking into the tender marrow cradled inside.

The shower’s already running hot, the mirror’s fogged, and he watches the shadowed smudge that reflects back at him, charred remains of a soul he barely remembers and can’t forget.

Under the water, droplets form rivers that wind scarlet paths down his body.
