Summary: Disapproval in the friendship leads to questions about their relationship. Sakura knows a little more than Syaoran about her feelings but can she show them? Little fluff with a dash of priceless naivety ♥
“What does he think he’s doing?!” They whispered “Does he think no one can see?! He must think we’re all blind” They agreed harshly “Ever since his father died he‘s been flaunting himself like this….”
“Well, what can you expect” said the haughtiest girl, raising her chin slightly “from someone who has no real place…?”
Syaoran didn’t bow his head, nor did he lower his eyes. Instead he kept his calm smile on his face as he walked past the group of villagers in a way that only made their feelings worse. Some of the men gave him dirty looks, the girl’s shook their heads in disbelief. Their feelings towards his relationship with Sakura were clear, which was odd since Syaoran was sure he knew what he felt for her and it was definitely not in the way they suspected. Everyone who watched as he carried a sleeping Sakura in his arms thought he was seducing her or something equally mortifying. Having her fall asleep at his house wasn’t exactly working for his side in the matter, even if she had been doing so for years now.
Sakura was his friend though. His only friend--his best friend. People could think there was something more all they wanted, but they would never know that what he felt for her was greater than…than--
He blushed. He couldn’t even think about that! Not with Sakura…not with his friend. That was wrong in so many ways…..Wasn’t it? All this scene of him carrying her down the moonlight path to the palace was who they were. Who they had always been, and who each one of these people had watch grow up together. They were just Syaoran and Sakura, nothing more.
Syaoran smiled more truly, shifting her unconscious body more comfortably against his chest. She was so light when she slept….so warm….so perfect in his arms…Somehow being like this with her made him feel strong and unstoppable in the midst of all this disapproval.
“You know what he’s after, don’t you?” came a brash voice.
Syaoran looked up from that but once seeing he had heard the phrase, the group instantly split up. He nearly wanted to ask “what am I after…?” and not to be mean or cruel, but because he honestly didn’t think he was after anything. A friendship with Sakura was all he cherished and he already had that.
Their whispers seemed to know a lot more though, their looks to reveal what he couldn’t see in the simple action of him carrying her back to the castle.
“Don’t listen to them”
Syaoran knitted his brows and looked down to her smile. He was about to question but she snuggled deeper into his chest with a blush and said “You’re my most, most precious friend”
“You’re mine too” he smiled too, trying to lift her more “but that doesn’t mean you can trick me into carrying you when you‘re really still awake…”
“It’s not a trick!” she insisted quickly “I am sleeping right now…”
She made snoring sound against his chest to prove it but that and the vibration of her lips against him only made him laugh. She laughed too but the other’s around them were not.
“Disgraceful…”
Sakura looked up from where her face was buried and, like flies, the watchers scattered. Doors shut softly and the street was only for them at last. Lanterns and candles inside houses were their only real source of light since it was getting so dark. The clouds overhead had just about covered the moon, bringing with it cool wind in suggestion of a storm.
Syaoran looked up absently. He really hoped rain wasn’t coming, especially before he got Sakura home. Sakura loved the rain and it would take more than him carrying her in his arms to get her back to her already irritated brother.
She tugged on his shirt “…you don’t…you don’t listen to what they say do you?”
“What they--? Oh” he smiled sheepishly “…you mean because they think we’re…?”
She flushed pulling at thread on his black shirt “They make it sound so wrong…! And I don’t see why”
“There’s nothing wrong with our friendship” he agreed calmly.
There was a pause “…yes. That and--not that we are or ever going to….but, if we were….ever…they shouldn’t say those things”
Syaoran was slightly confused and showed it by a look which earned him a big smile and a set of arms around his neck in a warm embrace. Her laughter startled him more and he suddenly felt like Sakura knew more than himself about their friendship.
…..‘if we were ever…’ she had said….
He flipped the words around before freezing with a suddenly horrible thought “Y-you don’t think I-I’m--?!”
Sakura cracked up into laughter “You?!”
“Then…then what did you mean? If we were ever…”
She grew shy again and slid away from his neck “I don’t know” she shifted for a moment before asking softly “But…would you ever think of me…?”
“…think of?”
“…as more than a friend?”
Syaoran looked down to her oddly “What’s more than our friendship?”
She didn’t seem pleased with his answer and pouted, but rather than angry she seemed hurt “…never mind”
“No--I….do you mean…” Syaoran tried to complete his own sentence but no other title seemed to define them or who they could be when he already saw what they had as the most--more than he could ever dream of or deserve. He was stumped and looked to her for a clue, since it seemed very obvious to her, but Sakura wasn’t budging from her pout. So he tried “…I already said it wouldn’t be right for me to live in the palace if that’s what you’re asking…it’d be weird”
“It wouldn’t” she said quickly with a blush “…it’s sort of about that. But I meant like…you know…what they think…?”
He stiffened “…l-like in a…?” he outright stared at her from the strange notion “--Me and you…?”
She nodded, but she was examining his shirt threads again “…it’s okay if you don’t--wouldn‘t. I was just….just curious….that‘s all”
Carrying her was suddenly a lot more embarrassing than it had been a few seconds ago. He didn’t know what to think much less to say in response and so silence followed them for the rest of their journey while Syaoran tried to bring down the heat his body was suddenly suffocating within. When she slid out of his arms quickly at the palace he was confident he could easily escape from the subject with a quick hug goodnight, but Sakura blotched his escape by asking “Who?” with a strange tone.
The expression she gave made him more nervous “You’re angry”
“No! I’m…I‘m not--” She lowered her eyes with a blush “But… W-who do you think of?”
“I…I--I really don’t think of anyone”
“….Oh”
The word gave a perfect opportunity to closure and a second attempt for escape but Syaoran couldn’t move. Not when she suddenly looked so sad and miserable. He didn’t understand why him not thinking about people in that way was upsetting and so he could only think on her instead. Even with the sudden air of melancholy she looked so pretty. He couldn’t imagine Sakura ever looking bad, thought it was impossible even. All the people of the village probably thought so too, he mused, and he wouldn’t have been surprised if they all “thought of her.”
But…that was slightly unsettling to think of, wasn’t it? Sakura being with someone like….like that.
A strange sadness came over him in the same moment Sakura picked to finally return the good night hug “You’ll come here for breakfast tomorrow, won’t you?”
He quickly hugged her back with a smile “I will”
“Perfect!” She pulled back with a happy smile again “I’ll see you in the morning then!--”
“Wait--” He managed to get her hand before she turned “Sakura…?”
“Hmm?”
“Do you….” he cleared his throat “Is there anyone….you think of…?”
For a long time Sakura stared at him, making him wish more than ever he had never said anything. Just because they were best friends didn’t mean he should ask such personal things. And after the moment passed and Sakura smiled and took his hands with a laugh he blushed darker than before from his stupid mouth.
“S-sorry, I--”
He didn’t see it coming, could never have imagined her ever doing such a thing but there it was. Sakura kissed him. The corner of her mouth had met with his bottom lip, giving him just enough room to taste her mouth, enough to time to terrify him from the way he enjoyed the taste and feeling of being kissed by the person he cherished above anyone and everything.
“….there is someone I think of!” she whispered with a smile
The rain that suddenly came down was no relief to his red cheeks and as Sakura quickly skipped away, poor Syaoran walked after his best friend in embarrassed confusion and questioned “Who…?” to her retreating back.
She only laughed and ran faster.
“W-wait!” He nearly tripped as he ran after her and asked “S-sakura….! Is it…is it---…me…?”
She didn’t seem to hear this time and so Syaoran stood in the rain with a troubled look as he tried to figure out who it was Sakura thought of, while at the same time desperately wishing it was him so that she would kiss him like that all the time.
