Summary: Syaoran's not pleased when the children of Clow start making him out to be some crazed feather obsessive. Sakura's on his side though and is set on making it right. A happily ever after that reflects the future? Yes, please.

“Once upon a time there was a boy. He was very handsome and smart and funny and had a really great smile too!”

“Oh no…” Syaoran flushed, burying his face in his hands

“It was really not fair though, because this great boy didn’t have any memories or a family. A nice man found him and took him to a kingdom where they could live together like a new family! In this kingdom lived a very nice and….pretty?”

She looked pointedly to Syaoran who nodded, but still refused to raise his heated face from his palms.

She smiled happily “Yes--a very nice and pretty Princess. The two of them met and they became friends very, very fast. The friendship they had together was the greatest that there ever was and even the Princess‘s mean older brother couldn‘t deny it!”

Sakura cheerfully passed the stick to Syaoran, but he was still face down in his own mortification and didn’t notice the gentle poking to his shoulder. The weight of everyone’s eyes on him in the room made him feel dizzy and ill. It was then he realized why he never helped Sakura tell stories to the village children anymore. A great amusement to her was people making up stories about the two of them. But, honestly? The last thing he wanted was to be a main character in a story….

“SYAORAN!”

“Wahhh!”

A round of children’s laughter came to accompany his jump from Sakura’s loud call in his ear. She clapped happily to his dramatic fall but was the first to help him right himself.

“It’s your turn!” she said gleefully, passing the large stick to him

Syaoran smiled nervously, looking up from the offering to the circle of different aged children around him. He also wasn’t fond of making up stories…or story telling…he knew some good history stories but if he tried to sneak those in then Sakura would tackle him straight to the ground.

“Ummm…they were good friends--yes. Everyday the two of them would…uhhh….play games together”

He passed the stick quickly to the child at his side, trying to ignore the pout Sakura was giving him.

The next boy in their line of story telling was a red-cheeked child of five, who looked strikingly similar to a chipmunk from his chubby cheeks. The boy smiled happily, holding the stick close “They would play tag, and hide-and-seek, and wrestling--”

Syaoran glanced hesitantly at Sakura from this at the same time she whispered “I would win if we did!! You want to try?!” Syaoran felt his cheeks burn and quickly set his attention back on the boy, trying not to think of the implication he hoped she wasn’t aware of.

“--,and racing too! One day they were both running really, really fast in this really cool race that made them travel out of the kingdom and into the desert! The Princess hurt her back from running though and so they had to stop so she could rest”

He passed the stick to a girl of twelve “And, like, there were these ugly bad men that came out of nowhere. And then they were all “give us your money” and the boy was all “No, we have none.” And so they were like “We’re going to take your friend instead”

Syaoran looked to Sakura “I don’t think kidnapping is a good theme for--”

“Shhh” she covered his mouth with her hand and smiled warmly

When he looked over the next child had the “talking stick”

“So the man tried to grab the Princess but the boy kicked him in the face and sent him straight to the ground. And then he kicked the other man too, and the other one after that. And they were bloody and beaten up and even uglier than before!”

All the children laughed but Syaoran flickered his attention to Sakura, who was still smiling “I’m really not violent…” he whispered absently

But she only giggled and leaned closer to him.

“The last one he kicked was a magician though” the next girl said quickly “And so for ruining his already ugly face he cursed the boy! Because it was his heart that had made him want to protect the Princess, the magician took it away!”

All the children gasped “Noo!!! Don’t take his heart!!”

“Wouldn’t he be dead?!”

“No, no” the girl shook her head “He still has a brain”

“Ooooooh” Everyone nodded their heads like it was the most obvious thing

“N-no” Syaoran made a nervous face “But he needs--”

“It’s magic!” Sakura cut in happily, which everyone aside from Syaoran readily agreed to

While the children were calming down after the surprise of the curse Syaoran took the opportunity to whisper “They’re taking my heart away now….? I don‘t want to be a main character any--”

“Don’t worry!” she poked his cheek, making him flush “It’s my turn soon, I’ll get it back for you!”

Syaoran never understood it, why Sakura liked stories with them as the characters so much. Whenever having the chance to teach some of the children in the village she would always put the two of them together, but sometimes in different modes of life. He personally didn’t like the idea of people making up an existence for him…and her. Together. It was cruel when they would end together in the stories too.

Especially since they made his character all wrong.

“Because he had no heart he started to go crazy--”

Syaoran slumped. So now he was psychotic and heartless…great.

“Every night he would run out into the desert and try to find feathers that birds had left behind!”

All the children laughed loudly “How weird!! Why would he want feathers?!”

“Because he was crazy without his heart!” the child responded confidently, which earned another string of laughter “and he had a huge collection that he kept in his house!”

Syaoran sighed, running a hand through his hair as the laughter continued. It was only a story, but because he knew that the weird feather-obsessed boy was supposed to be him it was upsetting. He glanced to Sakura and was surprised to see that she looked strangely worried. Deep contrast to the smiles of the children.

“What happened?! What did the girl do? Did she know?”

The next child, a girl around the age of Sakura and himself, took the stick “She knew…but he didn’t care that she knew”

Sakura leaned forward with a tone that made the room silent “Why?”

“Because he didn’t care about her anymore! Nothing the two of them did together mattered to him--all he wanted was to collect his feathers! He would always walk right past her and leave her. He didn't care that she called his name or that she was crying....all he wanted was feathers--”

“Noo!!”

“It’s okay Princess!” the children cooed “It’s only a story! Nothing like that would really happen!”

Syaoran had been slightly startled from her outburst too, especially when she grabbed his hand. But even though he squeezed her hand back she was still looking to the child with the stick “Why didn’t---?”

“Because he had no heart!” she said simply

“That’s horrible!” Sakura said darkly “Here--give me that. I need to go next!”

Syaoran watched as Sakura crawled away from the spot at his side and moved to be next in line in the story circle. The new child next to him was a girl of four who opted for climbing up into his lap instead sitting at his side. Sooner than not Syaoran learned the child really liked pulling on his shirt and chewing on his fingers. After the child had settled, and was happily munching on his hands, and the circle had been shifted to accommodate their Princess, Syaoran looked back to Sakura.

She took everything so literally and so deeply, even stories. Sakura was really too kind and gentle for her own good and maybe that’s why…he loved her so much.

Syaoran blushed, lowering his head with a soft smile. A smile that was poked by his four year old companion “Ill? Not well?” she asked, pointing to his red cheeks

“Yea” Syaoran whispered with a sad smile “Very not well…”

“….So the Princess set out on a journey to get his heart back from the one who had stolen it” Sakura held the stick tightly to her chest “She had to face many tasks and fight many enemies, but even if they were stronger, and bigger, and smarter than her she gave herself and her heart in order to get his back…her heart was given to him but he still left her”

Sakura’s tender smile was so moving that the whole room went silent and even the child in his lap stopped biting his fingers to watch her. Syaoran’s hand automatically reached out to comfort her, though he didn’t know from what, but dropped to his side just as quick.

“…she gave her heart?” One girl asked “But why?”

Sakura laughed softly “What good is a heart if it’s in pieces?”

Syaoran was startled. Was Sakura really thinking the story was about them?

“Princess, you’re making it into a tragic love story again!” the girl beside her pointed out “Pass the stick on already…!”

Sakura smiled to the girl before passing the stick on to the next person. The next few people in between Syaoran and her spoke of the challenges she had to face and the weird people she had to work with in order to get her friend’s heart back. Someone had thrown in some vampires and a talking rabbit for some reason too and though everyone had laughed at the much needed comic relief Syaoran’s mind was still on Sakura. Since her turn had ended, she hadn’t once looked him in the eye, and if her sight went in his direction then she turned a really deep shade of red. Had he not been truly worried that the outcome of this story effected her happiness, Syaoran would have noticed just how pretty she looked when she blushed so dark.

The time finally came. The stick was pressed to his palm before taken up for a snack by the girl who was still in his lap. Even she looked up expectably, it seemed, now that it was his turn. Some of the older children were sharing secret smiles and looking between him and Sakura and though he would prefer not to notice it, it was pretty obvious that some caught on to the story having to do with them.

Him, a nobody, and a Princess….

He may never have a chance in real life to make her happy, so maybe he could try in this make believe world that she cared about.

After a deep breath Syaoran smiled, looking up to the others. Then to Sakura “….she finally found him in that place. There were feathers everywhere while the rest of the place was in ruins. The vampires and the talking rabbit stayed behind as the Princess approached her friend…” he swallowed hard. Playing a phrase for Sakura was embarrassing, especially as she was hanging on his every word “…and...and she said…she said--”

“Did you enjoy breaking my heart?”

Everyone looked over to Sakura with wide eyes, but no one reprimanded her. Instead, they seemed to lean forward in anticipation. Especially the girl’s who had been giggling when his turn came around.

“No. I enjoy keeping it alive and well’ he said ‘which is why I’m still gathering these feathers…’”

Sakura’s face scrunched up “That makes no sense! If you cared anything about me then you wouldn‘t have left me for them…who cares about feathers?!” Sakura stared him down for a good long time before gasping and giggling “--is what she said…O-of course!”

A string of giggles irrupted as Syaoran smiled nervously “The feathers are for you’ he said ‘--for you because….errr….because your back is still hurt from our race and…and they're to relax on”

All the children sweat dropped.

"....because if your body is...if it's unwell then a heart is useless for it"

Sakura pouted “Why would you, a heartless being--” Syaoran slightly cringed “--want to do something for me…? You don’t even know who I am! So how do you know about my back problem?!’…..she said”

“I do know you” His face heated up considerably as he whispered “…you’re the one who gave your heart to me---for me”

Sakura’s face lit up. A hand went to her mouth to cover a gasp, and he swore he saw her eyes water “That’s right!! You do know me…? You know our friendship…?!”

He shook his head, leading to the children in the room to whisper in shock “I don’t know it….but I can feel it” He put a hand to his chest with a smile “Because I gave my heart to you when we met I feel myself in your heart now. We’re connected by our lo….” his voice cracked “--by our friendship and no so one can take one heart without the other. We will always be together and so long as you live I will live too so--GAH!”

All the children stood up and clapped and cheered as Sakura leapt across the space to cover Syaoran’s face with kisses and tears. Even the girls laughing and whistling in the background didn’t ruin the moment for him though. Instead Syaoran kissed her back and held her tighter than she held him as they laughed and blushed in the only happily ever after he was sure he would have a part in.
