Adopting A Child

A couple of years ago, I applied to adopt a child (one abroad that is, not a child of my own!). I got all the forms, spoke to a lovely lady on the phone about it all, and then realised that I simply couldn't afford it. Student loans don't really have space for extras...I felt terrible for leaving a child in the lurch ( Read more... )

Thats such an awesome idea! My mum knows a lady who adopted a child when he was just a baby and sponsered him all the way through until he was 18, then went out to stay with him and his family for his 18th birthday. They took her round the village and showed her everything that her money has paid for over the years, they built a well with a pump and a shower block with her money, along with school books and properly protecting their house from mosquitoes, they did so much with just £15 a month or however much it was.

I'd love to hear updates when you get it all sorted!

Wow! That's a really lovely story :D It's amazing how much can be done with a small amount of money.

World Vision is definitely one of the more reputable ones, at least here in Aus. They have a very Christian-based mission, if that's a factor.

Ever thought of helping out a poor White child in parts of South Africa, Scotland, Northern Ireland, or Appalachia?

The Christian doesn't really come in to it for me personally, I just like knowing that I'm helping.

I've had a look at the World Vision site, and you can sponser children in Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and Latin America. You can just pick to help a child 'where the need is greatest' too.
To be honest, I didn't know that countries like Scotland and N.Ireland ran sponsership programs.

Sounds good. I don't know if the larger sponsorship organisations operate in those two places, but there's need in some communities there too.
