Philosophy 101 #2 - Reality and Creation

I've been thinking about this, and perhaps the only thing that is real is thought itself.  But that raises the question of why it is soo hard for us to change things here by thought alone.  Maybe something we perceive is less flexible and open to change, the more people believe it is a particular way.  So if everyone believes the sky is blue, for ( Read more... )

Hi there, saw you on Stacey's journal and clicked over to check yours out and was happily surprised by this entry.

I'm taking a philosophy class this semester and this is one of the things we've been focusing on (i.e. people's perception and questioning what we consider to be "reality"). I think much of the basic building blocks that were handed down to us growing up were just mechanisms of control and standardization. I mean, we can't have people going around calling "blue," "green" or no one would be able to communicate clearly. The disadvantage in this is that we don't usually allow our imagination and dreams to carry as much weight as they probably should.

I totally agree. Our perceptions are shaped by parental influence and the school system, and peer influences. Imagination isn't particularly valued anymore... something I encounter in my IT job. Elegant but non - standard program solutions are not encouraged but I am a self taught programmer... It is only my reputation for my work that lets me get away with it... If a programmer here codes a non-standard way the work tends to be thrown back in their faces to recode. The validity of their solution is judged on whether it conforms to past examples... This stifles innovation terribly...

I've friended you if that's okay... its nice to be able to chat about this kind of thing.

April.

I am so glad that I'm not working in a stifling environment like that. My boss is a fantastic strategic thinker and leads by a great example. This is the first job I've had where I've been encouraged to develop a career instead of sitting around doing the status quo "job requirements as outlined in the position description."

Yes, totally cool! We have many same interests! I've added you as well.

Quick background for me on the TG thing - My girlfriend is TG (m2F) but in the very beginning stages (i.e. no hormones, not living FT yet). She only discovered this about herself a few months before we met. :)
