Gerald, April, and the Basesaprilp_katjeMay 25 2007, 00:49:56 UTC
howtheduck, I confess I was more than a little surprised at the some of the definitions for "second base" collected at the UrbanDictionary. When did second base become the new third base?!?!?!?!?
I'd always understood the bases to be:
First: Kissing
Second: Feeling up
Third: Feeling down
Home run: intercourse
Though I don't want to have April come out and say it, in my mind, Gerald and April went to third base (in my old-fogey sense of the term) when she turned exactly 15.5, this past October. :)
The nature of the UrbanDictionary is such that definitions seem to change by people voting whether they agree with a definition or not. I don't consider it to be a dictionary in the strictest use of the term. Some of the definitions for "diddle" are clearly wrong, based on the etymology of the word, for example.
It is more difficult to determine accuracy when you are using a baseball metaphor. I don't think second base became the new third base so much as people considered touching parts with fingers to be a different stage than touching parts with mouth. With your definition of third, there is no mouth mentioned at all.
I don't remember the 15.5 birthday storyline. I went back in the archives to try to find it on October 1, 2006 or thereabouts and the closest I found was April going into a closet to give Gerald some street cred, but it did not mention specifically what April and Gerald did. What day was the 1/2 birthday celebrated?
Gerald and Becky have been sort of hanging out together while I'm working. Like I don't know what's going on. Ger and I had made a promise not to hook up- not for any of us to hook up because of the band. I hope it's just for "friendship" like Becker says.
She seems very much single in March 2005 when an older boy flirts with her at the movies:
Steve came back into the theatre with us and watched the show again - and he sat next to me the whole time! He kept whispering to let me know when there was a cool part coming up, and he let me have his Junior Mints.
Duncan was totally mad - he phoned me later and kept telling me that Steve's no good, and that no normal guy in grade eleven is going to like someone my age. He was totally acting like my big brother or something, but then he told me that Becky's totally got a bad reputation now, and that if guys are following us around at the movies it's because they think I'm like she is.
Finally in August 2005 we have April and Gerald as a couple, and

I don't consider the letters to be canon if they disagree with the strip. But in this case they do explain why Gerald went from kissing April in February, 2003 and being declared as her boyfriend at her April, 2003 birthday party to just a pal for the next 2 years. I suspect someone pointed out to Lynn Johnston that April was just 11 going on 12 at the time. Nevertheless, in the interim period, the letters also talk about April being nervous because Gerald is spending so much time with Becky; and there are numerous strips with April and Gerald paired off on group dates with Duncan and Becky. They are about as boyfriend / girlfriend as 6th - 8th graders should be, in my opinion.

I share your suspicion on this. For a while, Lynn was having April engage in a host of prematurely adolescent behaviors. For example, the All About April collection, which documented April from birth through her tenth birthday, had a passage from Lynn about April hanging out at other kids' houses in unsupervised co-ed groups, trying cigarettes and beer. I think Lynn's reasoning at the time was "everything happens earlier now." She began to back away from this idea, and April was tamer between ages 13 and 16 than was from ten to eleven.

If Lynn would just let April have it out with Gerald, or at least let us see her with Gerald to know she was not going to have it out; then there would be somewhere to go with it. However, if you are tired of the 4+ years idea, I will think on some other way to approach the hanging situation with Gerald.
I think you got confused about what night was the all ages show at the Koolhaus (Saturday, not Friday), so put a little fix in that April bumped her head and dreamed it. I hope that's OK.
Future of April and GeraldhowtheduckJune 5 2007, 03:21:43 UTC
Since the band (Eva and Luis, anyway) appears to be rallying around Gerald and not April, and Gerald appears to be playing the humble card around them, and Eva threw out the "just a telethon" line to April; there is a good possibility that Gerald and April will reunite. I remember Liz and Anthony broke up and got back together several times during the course of their high school years, and Lynn Johnston loves repeating stories, so it would not be out of line for this to happen.
qnjones has already said Becky and Gerald have done the deed with each other, but that won't work if April and Gerald resume their relationship. So, I have had Howard hint that Becky and Gerald are not telling the truth. If April and Gerald reunite, my plan is that Becky and Gerald were pretending to be intimate as a means to give April a lesson of sorts, i.e. not to assume that Gerald is intimate with Becky just because he agrees to play a telethon with her. This will come off as one of those reality TV practical jokes from the Newlyfoobs show

howtheduck, I think this was good thinking. I had a feeling you were planting an April-Gerald reconciliation contingency when you had Howard leave that hint. :)
London Bridge explanationhowtheduckJune 16 2007, 16:45:06 UTC
I should have pointed to definition #2 in the Urban Dictionary:
The true "London Bridge" occurs when two girls are being done doggy style, facing each other and making out while the two lucky men high five over them.
This was why Axel was suggesting all 4 of them be involved and why Honoria and April were so shocked.
