Thank you to sonneta for posting the link to tomorrow's strip.

It seems to me that ( spoilage follows )

I don't think it necessarily means she goes to the University of Saskatchewan -- once she has her vet degree, she can work anywhere in Canada. She would just have to specialize in large animals (or whatever the classification is for horses) in Guelph.

I also think that it would be really hard for April to get the grades that she needs if she transferred to Manitoba. The curriculum in Manitoba is not the same as the curriculum in Ontario. She'd also probably have a really hard time enrolling in high school there, as she's non-resident.

BTW1, there was recently an article in the Toronto Star profiling the top graduate from each school board in the GTA. One of them wants to be a vet, but she's starting off by taking a science degree at McMaster in Hamilton (which has a good medical school.) It looks like her fallback position is to be a MD!

Good point about going to Guelph and still relocating to Calgary. Maybe that will simply arise from a desire to be far, far away from Milborough. :)

Obviously, April's fate is Lynn Johnston's reaction to all those people complaining about how Elizabeth gave up her life in Mtigwaki. Of course, if Lynn were still writing the strip 7 years in the future after April had spent a little time in Calgary, she might suddenly feel a little homesick after hearing Gerald got a divorce and decide to move back to Milborough. After all, Liz had her First Nations boy to keep her in Mtigwaki, too.

Lynn's other motivation seems to be, oddly enough, promoting Canadian tourism. She mentions the Calgary Stampede, and the Montreal "Just for Laughs" festival.

As for April's Real Blog, the choice is to dump Jeremy Jones or keep him. It's easy to find a way to dump him, just by having him not follow April to Calgary ( ... )

Excellent. I guess I'm a bit torn about Jeremy. I like the story you've outlined, but part of me thinks their ending up together would perpetuate the whole "childhood sweetheart" thing the strip has established.

Also--how do you think we should frame this all tomorrow. Does the Witch of Corbeil arrive in fortune-teller garb?

Yup. Is it just me, or is the drawing style odd and out of keeping with anything we've seen before in the strip? Especially Mike's weird face. And why the sicky laughing expressions on the faces of Dee and the Patterspawn? And sewing school? Seriously? Why, so people can prepare to work at a sweat shop for less than sustenance wages? This isn't the 19th century, Lynnie. Try to keep up.

I have fooled by this before. The art has the cartoony style that is typical for Lynn when she draws her background characters. All it really means is that Lynn slapped together these drawings just like she would drawing her normal background of deformed, mutants from Milborough.

Isn't Jeremy's father "Country" Jones?

Good point. Country boy does not necessarily have to mean "boy who lives in the country". It could mean, "boy involved with country music". I will note that the Calgary Stampede does have the Calgary Stampede Show Band, and any place that is going to be doing primarily outdoor music is going to need a good sound man.

Actually "Country Jones" was a name I created because Jeremy Jones' father did not have a name in the strip, only an association with a country music band.

I'm glad that the strip o' destiny only says she has the "opportunity" to work with the Calgary Stamped. As a vegan, no way would my April accept a job with them. She might join in with whoever is protesting their abuse of animals, though!I don't think Vegan necessarily means Animal Abuse protester. My sister is a vegetarian because of her views about the conditions in slaughterhouses; but she likes some parts of rodeo, just not the parts where the point of the event is for the animal to get tied and pinned, which she considers to be cruel ( ... )

"It was really tough at first, drawing John and Elly as a happy couple," Johnston said. "But the more I drew the character John, the more I realized he was a fantasy."

That's true--I don't participate in protests, nor do I plan to. Notice I only wrote that she "might" join a protest. OTOH, I'd imagine her having misgivings about working for them.

As a veterinarian with a compassion for large animals, April could take the stance of working within the system to improve it, i.e. show the Calgary Stampede folks how to do a chuckwagon race that results in no animal injuries.

Do you think that would work with ARB April?

I suppose that depends upon how much improvement she really thinks she can achieve. I don't know enough about the events to know whether it would be possible to find an injury-free way to do them. It could be that she'd face a situation where she'd be telling them that they really have to eliminate that race altogether and being shown the door.

But I suppose this is all pretty well a moot point. ;)

What it boils down to is: Do you want to have ARB April adhere to the facts as presented in the strip, with modifications to make it work for ARB April?

Or do you want ARB April to say that this is just another case where her mother got the facts wrong?

Well, the strip only says that she'll have the opportunity to take a job with the Calgary Stampede. It would be possible to decline the opportunity without contradicting what's given in the strip.

OTOH, the scenario you've outline above intrigues me. :)

If April does decide to join the Calgary Stampede, it would have to be as their on-site veterinarian, or vet assistant ( ... )

There are actually many vegans who dislike PeTA. This is pretty much the consensus (or as close to consensus as we get) over at veganpeople. :)

April being at CS in an undercover capacity is an interesting idea, though. If I were to continue her story, I might work that in. Then eventually the animals could be rehomed in farm sanctuaries.
