Now we get to hear both sides....

This is something I drew sometime last year, I think. Yeah, more issues with people's cell-phone conversations. My original drawing was too wide for the scanner, so part of the non-spoken text was cut off on both sides and I ended up erasing it and adding it back in via PaintShop Pro. Anyway, drawing's behind the cut. ( Their calls are so important, they think we need to hear the whole conversation. )

I wish they had never invented speaker cellphones for two reasons. You've illustrated the first. As for the second, I once had a very personal conversation while walking along a crowded street in Toronto with the fricking speaker turned on. I must have accidentally hit the speaker button when I answered the phone. I no longer have that phone....

Yikes! Yeah, that would cause me to ditch the phone, too. I remember there was a point last year where it seemed that suddenly everyone was having these speaker-phone conversations on their cells. It's so gratuitous. 0_o

I doubt anyone heard me on the street with all of the background noise, but I was still really embarrassed. I remember having a late lunch in a place where there was only one other customer. She was having a conversation over her speakerphone with her real estate agent. I remember thinking it was weird that she was holding the phone up to her ear when the speaker was on, and then I noticed that she had the same model of phone that I had at the time. I think that model of phone had more than one victim.

And that's it for the speakerphone conversations I've ever witnessed. I just asked Ms M, who takes transit much more than I do, if she's ever seen any. She hasn't. I don't know why: are Torontonians more polite or more secretive or do they just have better hearing ;)

Probably more polite. And/or uninfluenced by the TV show The Apprentice. This last is just my theory, but I remember in the first season of the show, in 2004, contestants were using Blackberries on speaker, and the woman who was recapping the show at Television Without Pity was calling them "space communicators"--this was so unfamiliar. Two or three years later, it seemed people everywhere were speakering. (It think it might be dying down, though--I hope!)

Me, too! Especially when the perpetrators carry themselves as though they're oh-so-important. Erg.

Sometimes I'm trapped on the bus with these conversations. Maybe if I'm feeling very vengeful the next time this happens, I'll transcribe and comicfy. ;)
