Part IX: And His World Comes Crashing Down Again

Zekarion's hand shook, clenched tightly around the phone. The receiver cracked slightly as he returned it to its base, glaring at the imagined Carriedo in front of him. That man just was leaving him here to take the fall, when he was the cause of all this!? The nerve of him... he would regret this!

When he turned to exit the office, he heard the faint sound of police sirens in the distance. They were coming closer.

"Shit," the man thought. This would ruin his reputation completely. Was this it? Was this the end of all his hard work, the ten long years he'd spent to gain all this power? All gone to hell...

The realization only made him angrier. For this, he would make them pay.

Zekarion strode into the living room where the young Gouka was still sitting, changing his expression into one of nonchalance. He could see his ward had heard the sirens as well, and there was a strange, almost pained look on his face. He must have been wondering why the police were coming this way, he mused briefly.

Soon enough, though it felt like hours, there was a knock on the door.

"FBI, open up."

Shinju's face paled noticeably as he sat there, shocked. "Z-Zekarion--I thought you said the company had nothing to do with this--!"

The older of the two walked to the door without responding, opening it as if he had nothing to fear. The young man stood perplexed by the lack of reply, sitting on the edge of his seat, still stunned by the presence of the FBI.

"And what can I do to assist you." It was more of a statement than a question--Zekarion knew what they were here for.

"Zekarion Altier, you're under arrest for embezzlement, connections to organized crime, importing illegal drugs, and ordering the assassination of Datei and Elizabeth Gouka."

His eyebrows shot up in surprise. He certainly hadn't expected them to find out that last deed. Almost out of curiosity, he glanced back at Shinju. He had gone even paler, if possible, looking nearly like a ghost. His eyes were wide, and the man could see the slight tremors of his hands as they clenched the armrests of the chair he sat in.

The last member of the Gouka family stood. "No," he said, rejecting the idea. "That's not possible."

"How very insensitive of you," Zekarion said casually to the agent, though the other man didn't bother responding, only furrowing his eyebrows for a moment as his fellows went to cuff the accused criminal. He didn't bother struggling as they told him his rights; that would be undignified, after all.

Shinju continued to protest, stepping forward and raising his voice. "No. No! They're lying--tell me they're lying!" he cried desperately, terrible memories repeating in his head. Zekarion let a small smile reach his face, seeing how well he had fooled his ward.

He only said three words, each enunciated as if to emphasize the truth of the statement.

"They are not."

The young man fell to his knees. The words had felt like a blow to the head, and he was still stunned from it as silent tears escaped from his eyes. He couldn't even say anything. The only thing he could think of was that he'd been betrayed by the one man he trusted the most.

The CEO of GHI was led outside, and he ignored the cameras documenting his arrest as the agents and police officers made their way to the cars, their lights still going. Without a word, he sat down in the vehicle, still holding his head high.

After they had gone a few miles down the road, Zekarion grinned.

The car exploded, leaving only debris and the corpses of the officers behind.
