Usually, people say, "You don't seem like the type of person who goes to church a lot." to which I reply "I'm Unitarian." That usually confuses them enough to let me explain what we believe.

i had the same problems when i told people that i was the social action coordinator for the southwest district of YA. People thought I was like crazy involved in church and a bible thumper, and i said the same as you..."I'm unitarian, we're not a super christian churchy church" and people thought I was in a cult, and not only that but I was in a high position of power within that cult. Like I was about to put everyone in Nike jogging suits and give them "special punch". Little did they know it only meant i planned things that nobody could come to. Ever.

My biggest amusement is the look on people's faces when I tell them that I coordinated a Rocky Horror Picture Show event. At my church. "AT YOUR WHAT?!?"

There are a lot fewer bible thumpers at UIUC though. Even at the law school. People randomly comment about being anti-religion.

Oh yeah, and you've got James Galbraith as a professor, huh? That's pretty neat. He was one of the scholars whose works we studied in my Political Economy class in undergrad (I think it was either spring or fall of '03)
