Background: Seven years ago, through a replication process known as fomicry, the replica we know today as Luke fon Fabre was born. He was replicated using the original Luke fon Fabre, the son of Duke Fabre, the second-highest ranking man in the Kingdom of Kimlasca. The original Luke had been kidnapped by Van Grants, a dorian general in service to the Order of Lorelei, who wanted Luke and his abilities to help bring about the end of the world as we know it. However, Van needed something to distract the royal family and House Fabre, so Luke was replicated. The replica Luke was then left in Duke Fabre's former vacation residence, Choral Castle, for Duke Fabre to find.
When Duke Fabre found Luke, he found him with memories of nothing. Mentally, Luke was an infant. The physicians believed that this was caused by the mental trauma of being kidnapped by the Malkuth Empire (which is what the Kimlascan royal family was told, rather than having been kidnapped by Van), and the advice given was to re-teach Luke from the ground up and to have him keep a regularly-updated diary in case he suffered more amnesia. He was also forbidden to set foot outside the manor.
Fast-forward to the present. Luke was training with Van, his sword instructor (who was monitoring him to use him later down the line) when a mysterious woman invaded the manor and attacked Van. Luke interfered, but the hyperresonance that occurred between the two (who were both capable of using the Seventh Fonon) warped them out of the manner and into the Tataroo Valley, which was in Malkuth territory.
The woman, Tear Grants (Van's own sister, but Luke didn't know that yet), apologized to Luke for getting him into this mess, and took upon herself the responsibility of getting Luke back home to Baticul. However, they thought they were still in Kimlasca, so when they found a coach driver, Tear gave the instruction to take them back to "the capital." However, they were in Malkuth, so that meant they were going to Grand Chokmah, not Baticul. By the time they realized the mix-up, Luke and Tear were already across the Rotelro Bridge, which was then destroyed by a small group of bandits known as the Dark Wings. This left them with taking the long road back to Baticul -- south to Kaitzur, then catching a ferry to Chesedonia, then catching another ferry to Baticul.
Luke and Tear got off in the farming village of Engeve, where Luke ended up accused of stealing food. However, Fon Master Ion, who happened to be in the area, identified the culprits as cheagles. Pissed, Luke went to the Cheagle Woods to get the record set straight. There, he, Tear, and Ion found that a young cheagle had accidentally burned down a forest that had served as a home for a pack of ligers. The ligers had then demanded the cheagles fetch them food or be eaten themselves. Luke and Tear ended up killing the liger queen and saving the cheagles, and as a "reward," the elder cheagle had the cheagle that burned down the ligers' home accompany Luke with the Sorcerer's Ring. This cheagle was named Mieu, and excelled at annoying the living hell out of Luke.
Upon exiting the forest, though, Luke and Tear were placed under arrest by Colonel Jade Curtiss of the Malkuth Imperial Army and were taken into custody aboard his landship, the Tartarus. While aboard, they were approached by Jade with a proposition.
Grand Maestro Mohs of the Order of Lorelei was trying to orchestrate a war between Kimlasca and Malkuth. Jade's assignment was to bring Ion to Baticul to persuade King Ingobert VI that Malkuth did not want war, and he hoped to use Luke's testimony as the son of Duke Fabre to help sway the king.
However, the Tartarus then came under attack by four of the Six God-Generals of the order of Lorelei: Largo the Black Lion, Legretta the Quick, Arietta the Wild, and Asch the Bloody. The entire crew of the Tartarus was killed, and Luke, Tear, Jade, and Ion were forced to retreat on foot. Thanks to surprise help from Guy Cecil -- one of Luke's servants -- they succeeded in escaping.
Continuing on foot, the group reached the border at Kaitzur, where they ran into Anise Tatlin, a Fon Master Guardian. They continued on to Kaitzur Naval Port, where they learned that Arietta had kidnapped one of the mechanics and taken him to Choral Castle -- the same place Luke was found seven years ago -- and demanded that Ion and Luke come or the mechanic's life would be taken. They complied, and Luke was captured and had a procedure forced upon him by Dist the Reaper, another God-General. Guy managed to free Luke, the mechanic was rescued, and the group proceeded to Baticul.
In Baticul, Luke was summoned to the audience hall at the castle, where he was given an assignment by the king. The Malkuth mining town of Akzeriuth was suffering from miasma poisoning, but Malkuth was having trouble reaching Akzeriuth. However, Akzeriuth, as a former Kimlascan territory, was accessible via the Deo Pass from the Kimlascan side. Therefore, Kimlasca was sending a small group as a gesture of goodwill. Luke was selected to lead the group in accordance with the Score, and was appointed as Kimlasca's ambassador. Also included in this group were Tear, Jade, Guy, and Van.
However, upon exiting the castle, the group ran into Anise, who informed them that Ion had been kidnapped. To make matters worse, the Six God-Generals were waiting at the entrance to the city. With no other alternative, the group was forced to cut through the abandoned factory on the outskirts of Baticul while Van took the ship prepared for them as a decoy. While there, they were joined by Luke's fiancee and the princess of Kimlasca, Natalia Luzu Kimlasca-Lanvaldear, who blackmailed Luke into letting her accompany them.
Upon exit, however, they found the Six God-Generals loading Ion onto a landship. In an attempt to rescue Ion, Luke clashed with Asch...and noticed how he and Asch looked virtually the same. Luke failed to rescue Ion, however, and the Six God-Generals escaped with him. To make matters worse, the decoy operation was a failure.
While in Chesedonia, Luke experienced a crippling headache. During this, much to his surprise, he heard Asch's voice. Asch told Luke to go to the Zao Ruins out in the desert. Upon arriving there, the group found the Six God-Generals forcing Ion to open a Daathic seal. They were able to rescue Ion here, and then continued on their trip to Akzeriuth.
Upon reaching Akzeriuth, everyone set to helping the residents...except Luke. He had been told by Van that he needed to use his hyperresonance to neutralize the miasma, and spent his time searching for Van. Tear, meanwhile, was called by an Oracle Knight because there was a rock suspected to be the Seventh Fonstone, for which she had been searching. Luke, meanwhile, was led by Van into Akzeriuth's Sephiroth and down to its passage ring. Here, Van assured Luke that, if he used his hyperresonance, he would neutralize all of the miasma in Akzeriuth. However, they were interrupted by Asch, but too late -- the damage was done. Akzeriuth fell, while Van escaped with Asch. The group survived, but only because of Tear singing a fonic hymn.
When they came to, they found themselves on what was left of Akzeriuth surrounded in a sea that consisted not of water, but of a mixture of mud and miasma. Before what little land was left sank, everyone boarded the Tartarus, which had fallen along with them and was floating on the surface. While on the Tartarus, Tear explained the situation. The place they were now in was the Qliphoth, and the true surface of the planet Auldrant. Two thousand years ago, the surface of Auldrant liquefied, and to save it, the land was raised into the air by the Sephiroth. This area was known as the Outer Lands. Furthermore, Van had used Luke's hyperresonance ability to deactivate the Sephiroth holding up Akzeriuth, which made Luke realize that it was his actions that killed all of those lives. While he tried to deny responsibility, everyone around him got sick of listening to him and went up to the bridge.
Jade steered the Tartarus to the one safe location in the Qliphoth, Yulia City. Here, the group was confronted by Asch. Infuriated with Luke, Asch revealed the truth of Luke's past -- that Asch was the real Luke fon Fabre, and Luke was a replica. The two ended up fighting, but Luke was no match for his original.
The next thing Luke knew, he was looking into a mirror...and seeing Asch look back. Luke himself was lying unconscious, and he was seeing things through Asch's eyes. The rest of Luke's group decided to abandon Luke, except Tear, who remained in Yulia City. Everyone else used the Tartarus to get back up to the Outer Lands, where they found out that war was brewing because Kimlasca believed that Malkuth had intended to sink Akzeriuth while Luke and Natalia were there. After some time, though, Asch cut off the line and Luke woke up back in his own body.
Luke, armed with the knowledge that the town of St. Binah was going to fall, tried to find someone to help. He found Tear. Tear admonished Luke for not thinking for himself, and Luke realized she was right and how much of a jerk he'd been. Luke then decided to change. When Tear was skeptical, Luke borrowed one of Tear's knives and cut his hair as a sign that he was going to change. He also gave Tear the chance to go with him to watch him change.
First, Luke and Tear went to speak with Tear's grandfather and the elder of Yulia City, Teodoro. Teodoro, however, was not much help -- he insisted that St. Binah would not fall because it was not predicted in the Score. Luke and Tear, however, had begun to suspect that the Score was not absolute. Nevertheless, Teodoro granted them permission to reach the Outer Lands via the Yulia Road that connected Yulia City to Aramis Spring.
In Aramis Spring, Luke and Tear first ran into Guy, who had left the group to wait for Luke, and then Jade, who had come to recruit Guy to rescue Ion and Natalia, who had been taken prisoner and were being held in Daath. At that point, the four headed for Daath, met up with Anise, and rescued Ion and Natalia from the Oracle Knights' Headquarters. From there, they made their way to the Malkuth capital of Grand Chokmah, hoping to explain the situation to Emperor Peony IX and prevent a war from breaking out.
From there they headed to St. Binah, where they found that the ground had already begun to sink. Unfortunately, it sank too far to rescue the villages without a way to fly. Luckily, Guy knew of a flight machine that was being tested out in Sheridan, and the group went to retrieve it. They returned with the machine, the Albiore II, and got the residents of St. Binah to safety in Yulia City before St. Binah fell.
With St. Binah in the Qliphoth, it was only a matter of time before it sank into the planet's core. Luke, however, was determined to save it, and so led the group to the passage ring located in nearby Shurrey Hill. There, Luke used his hyperresonance to order the Sephiroth holding up St. Binah to keep it above the surface of the Qliphoth. However, at the same time, they noticed that the rest of Rugnica and the Zao Desert were going to fall soon, too. To make matters worse, Kimlasca and Malkuth had gone to war -- with Rugnica as the battlefield.
After getting the people of Engeve to sanctuary in Chesedonia, the group headed for the Zao Ruins to the Sephiroth there, where they commanded the Sephiroth to lower the land slowly. It did so, but as it did, Jade noticed that the Sephiroth were beginning to go out of control. Because of this, the rest of the Outer Lands could fall at any time. But before they could do any more, the group was arrested and brought to Baticul.
Luke, a replica of the son of Duke Fabre, and Natalia, a false princess, were accused of attempting to overthrow the kingdom and were scheduled to be executed. However, they were broken out by the rest of the group, and fled through the Inista Marsh to Belkend.
In Belkend, the group ran into Van, who explained his motives. Van hated the Score, and had hated it ever since his birth home, the Isle of Hod, was destroyed to progress the Score while no one lifted a finger to help out. Therefore, he was going to destroy the world and recreate it using replicas, so that a world without a Score would exist.
Shortly after, Jade was given a forbidden text. According to the text, the crust's liquefaction was being caused by the vibrations in the core, which were themselves caused by the Planet Storm. To stop it, first they would need to measure the core's vibration, and then they would need to neutralize it. Some contacts Guy had in Belkend were able to make a device to measure the core's vibration, which was then taken to the Tataroo Valley Sephiroth to be used. After that, they decided they needed to set up a conference about lowering the land. They got both major nations to agree to a treaty and decide what to do about lowering the land in Yulia City. From there, the group went to Sheridan to see what could be done about neutralizing the core's vibration.
The plan was to use the Tartarus to dive into the core at the Akzeriuth ruins and leave it there, where it would emit a counter-vibration to neutralize the core's vibration. The group would then escape on the Albiore II. Down in the core however, they were accosted by Sync, who had erased the fonic glyph that was to generate a wind current allowing the Albiore II to escape. After defeating him, hearing his sob story, and watching him fall into the core, Luke redrew the fonic glyph with Tear's guidance, and the group escaped in the Albiore II. The solidification of Auldrant's crust began almost immediately.
Unfortunately, time was running short. They would not be able to reach the Radiation Gate, and instead would have to lower the rest of the Outer Lands from the Absorption Gate. From there they went to the Sephiroth located in the Meggiora Highlands, Mt. Zaleho, and Mt. Roneal, they made their way to the Absorption Gate. There, they confronted Van again. Much to Van's surprise, it was Luke, and not Asch, who challenged him, and the surprise grew even more when Luke and his friends managed to defeat Van. After Van's defeat, he fell into the Absorption Gate. Then, Luke went to the passage ring and attempted to use his hyperresonance to slowly lower the Outer Lands. He succeeded, albeit with some help from Asch in the Radiation Gate, and in the process, trapped the miasma in the core.
While they were doing this, both Luke and Asch were contacted by Lorelei. Lorelei told them that "one who would seize glory" was attempting to trap it, and was sending a part of the Key of Lorelei each to Asch (Sword of Lorelei) and Luke (Jewel of Lorelei). Then, Luke collapsed, exhausted. Auldrant was safe.
Fast forward a month. Luke has been milling about the manor, often lost in his head. He didn't really have much to do, so his mind wandered, and it often wandered to, "What would happen if Asch came back here?" As a result, he spent most of his time in a mild depression, and Mieu following him around didn't make it any better.
However, that would all change one morning, when Luke was woken up by Mieu with a message from Duke Fabre to meet him in the drawing room. Upon arrival, Duke Fabre told Luke that there had been signs that people had been inside the Absorption Gate, and Van's sword, which had been implanted in the ground upon Van's presumed death, had disappeared. Also, the Planet Storm had become more active, which meant that the Tartarus might not be able to continue to neutralize the core's vibration. Luke then leaves to try to assemble the group once again, heading for Sheridan to again borrow the Albiore II. While in Sheridan, Luke learned that Asch had taken the Albiore III and gone to the Radiation Gate a month ago, and had recently left for Yulia City. Luke decided to make Yulia City his next stop, where he was reunited with Tear. From there, they headed to Daath to find Anise.
While in Daath, Luke also ran into Guy, who had come to Daath with warnings for Ion. The first was from Malkuth, and was about Dist (believed to be the sole surviving God-General, Asch aside) breaking out of jail and breaking Mohs, who had been imprisoned for trying to start a war, with him. The second warning was from Asch, and was to "watch the God-Generals." Plural.
From there, Luke went to St. Binah, still on Asch's trail, and then to Shurrey Hill. In the Shurrey Hill Sephiroth, they found a ton of Oracle Knight corpses...and Legretta. The God-Generals were indeed alive. Asch was also there, fighting against Legretta.
According to Asch, Legretta, Arietta, and Largo were all alive, and possibly Sync and Van as well. Lorelei was also trapped somewhere, but Asch refused to say where. They then went back to St. Binah, where they were met by Jade, and then when they ran across an injured Malkuth general, to Grand Chokmah. The injured general explained that his battalion was attacked by a group of what appeared to be Kimlascan soldiers acting as suicide bombers. What was off-putting about them, however, was their hollow eyes. To make matters worse, they learned in Grand Chokmah that Van was indeed still alive. From there, the group headed to Baticul, where Natalia joined them. Next stop, Daath.
While in Daath, however, the miasma began to return to the surface of Auldrant. To make matters worse, Ion was kidnapped by Mohs...with Anise as an accomplise. Yes, Anise had been working with Mohs all along against her will. Mohs intended to make Ion read the Score from the Seventh Fonstone, which would almost certainly kill him. The group went into Mt. Zaleho to rescue Ion, but arrived too late -- Ion was forced to read the Score, exhausting the energy in his body and killing him. But at this point, there were more important things to worry about.
Like the miasma. Luke asked Jade if it were possible to use hyperresonance to neutralize the miasma, but Jade said it would only be possible with the Sword of Lorelei and the lives of ten thousand Seventh Fonists. Also, the user would have to give his own life. With no way to deal with the miasma for now, the group focused on the other threat -- Van.
Also in Belkend, the group learned that people were spontaneously dying. This was only happening to people who had gotten a Score reading from an unknown traveling Scorer, though. To make this even more fishy, the Order of Lorelei had ordered all Score readings to stop. The traveling Scorer was headed to Baticul next, so guess where they went next?
In Baticul, the group learned that Mohs was somewhere in the city. They found him at the port with Dist, who used an arte to implant Seventh Fonons into Mohs's body. This also had the side effect of turning Mohs into a monster. Unfortunately, our heroes were unable to stop them, and they left for a place called Eldrant.
They caught up to the Scorer in Chesedonia, where they found it was Sync. Sync also told them about a New Order of Lorelei led by Fon Master Mohs. From there, Luke went to Yulia City, where the group learned that a massive body was moving through the oceans, rapidly consuming Seventh Fonons.
Turns out it was the remnants of the Isle of Feres, an island wiped out by a tidal wave in the Hod War. Sure enough, Van was using it as a facility to make replicas. Also while there, a massive body emerged from the water and began to float in the air. This was Eldrant, a replica of the entire Isle of Hod. Unfortunately, it was protected by a barrier made by the Planet Storm, so that would have to be dealt with. It would require the cooperation of Kimlasca, Malkuth, and Daath, however.
Then there was still the issue of the miasma. Asch decided to take this into his own hands, though, and headed for the Tower of Rem to do so with the replicas. He would use the replicas instead of ten thousand Seventh Fonists, and he had the Sword of Lorelei, so he was set. However, our heroes weren't so willing to let Asch give his life, and ran off to stop him. At the tower, they managed to talk Asch down for the time being, and headed to Daath for the summit. After much deliberation, Luke agreed to take Asch's place.
Back in the Tower of Rem, Luke was prepared to do it, but Asch came in, trying to handle it himself. Jade restrained him, and when Tear tried to interfere, Guy held her back, and Luke unleashed his hyperresonance. However, it wasn't enough, so Asch got involved and helped him out. The miasma was neutralized, and Luke...was still alive. Luke should NOT have survived that, which means it was off to Belkend for a medical examination.
In Belkend, Luke was informed that his fonons were slowly separating. It was only a matter of time until he disappeared entirely. Luke asked the doctor to keep it a secret, and then told the rest of the group that he'd be fine. Jade saw through it, though, and Mieu overheard the two of them discussing it. Then, in Baticul, Mieu pulled Tear aside and told her what he overheard Luke and Jade saying.
After Baticul, they were off to Yulia City for the summit. There was really no choice -- the Planet Storm would have to be stopped. That made the Absorption Gate the next destination. In the Absorption Gate, they ran into Van, who was making another replica of Ion read the Score on the Seventh Fonstone for Mohs, predicting Auldrant's destruction. Here, though, Mohs lost his sanity due to neural contamination and ran off. Meanwhile, Luke used the Jewel of Lorelei to seal off the Absorption Gate, took the Ion replica back to Daath, and then made his way for the Radiation Gate. There, the group finally put Mohs out of his misery and sealed off the Radiation Gate with the Jewel of Lorelei. With the Planet Storm gone, the group headed to Chesedonia to prepare for the attack on Eldrant.
The following day, the Albiore II broke through Eldrant's defenses and let Luke and the others off. Along the way, though, Luke got caught in a trap -- a trap that had also caught Asch. Down there, Asch forced Luke into a fight to determine once and for all who was better, and after a tough battle, Luke emerged victorious. At that moment, Oracle Knights appeared to kill them both, but Asch gave Luke the Sword of Lorelei, opened the way for him, and ordered him to go while he held off the Oracle Knights.
Deeper into Eldrant, Luke witnessed, through his connection with his original, Asch's final moments. Asch had managed to kill most of the Oracle Knights, but was mortally wounded in the process. When Asch died, his fonons made their way into Luke's body -- just in time to trigger a second-order hyperresonance, previously thought impossible, to block a sneak attack by Sync. After fighting and killing Sync, the group pressed onward until they reached Van. After a long, hard fight, Van finally fell by a combined effort between Luke's second-order hyperresonance and Tear singing the Grand Fonic Hymn to weaken Van's control over Lorelei.
With Van gone, Eldrant began to crumble. However, someone still had to remain behind to free Lorelei. Luke volunteered to do so, and said his good-byes to each person individually (ending with Tear, who chose that chance to finally say she loved Luke). As the rest of the group escaped on the Albiore II, Luke set to work freeing Lorelei. In the process, Eldrant dissolved, and Luke seemingly disappeared.
Personality: Luke may have vowed to change, but there are a number of things that are still the same about him as from when he first got taken from the manor. First of all, he's still annoyed relatively easily. Most of the time he gets annoyed because of Mieu, but Jade also has a tendency to get on his nerves (and it's hilarious to see these two at it).
Luke also is not very worldly, though this is to be expected from being cooped up in the manor his entire life. As a result, Luke is (at first) unfamiliar with having to pay for goods, and knows relatively little about things that should be common knowledge, such as the Ancient Ispanian language. A good example of the latter comes when Luke tells Peony and the rest of the party about Lorelei's message, and everyone but Luke makes the connection to Van (since Van's full name, Vandesdelca, is Ancient Ispanian for "one who would seize glory"). He's also not very bright, coming up with terrible alibis and falling into traps that, at second glance, should have been obvious, and is an awful liar.
Luke's also spoiled, but that's one of the things he actively worked to change. He no longer expects his parents to pay for absolutely everything and for servants to do more menial tasks, but any time he needs money for something (especially in the case of the arte books that were accidentally sold), his first course of action is to go do a favor for his mother.
All of that being said, Luke definitely has changed. As stated before, he's a lot less of a spoiled rich kid than he used to be. In St. Binah, he ran around getting his hands dirty to try to get the people out, and in a related incident, escorted the people of Engeve across a battlefield himself. He also is more patient and difficult to annoy, shown how he starts treating Mieu a lot nicer than he used to.
Likewise, Luke is a lot more selfless now, too. He does his best to protect the people he cares about, and worries himself sick when they're ill or injured, especially in the case of Tear and the time she spent with miasma building up in her body from activating the passage rings. He even goes so far as to attempt to give his life to save everyone on the planet.
That being said, Luke is still human, and has a lot of insecurities. For one, he's terrified of dying. He talked a lot about being willing to die after he destroyed Akzeriuth, but when it came down to it, he was literally shaking in fear. Even though he was a replica, he wanted badly to live.
Being a replica has also given Luke an inferiority complex. He doesn't have a whole lot of self-confidence, and talks down about himself rather frequently. He does eventually get over this, but it takes him having to fight Asch to do so.
Luke also has a hard time taking human life. The first time he did so, he freaked out over it and ended up temporarily being a burden on Tear, Jade, and Guy. He was able to get over this problem by adopting the "me or them" mentality, but it still bothers him when he's forced to slay another human being.
Still, Luke has a very strong will. The fact that he overcame all of these hardships and faced off against his former mentor with an overwhelming desire to win and save the world is a testament to that. When it comes down to the wire, Luke is definitely a dependable friend and ally.
Possessions:
Relationships:
Status: Single (in a romantic plot with Tear Grants)
Misa Amane - Misa is one of the few cheerful people that Luke knows, which he appreciates when hanging out with her. Though he kinda wishes she wouldn't address him as "Lukey," but for the most part, he's gotten used to it. He was worried about her when he found out about her parents, though, and about revenge -- Luke hates killing for any reason, so he's not sure what to say to her on that road.
Tear Grants - Well, the fact that Luke finds Tear physically attractive is obvious, but he feels that she needs to lighten up. She takes everything too seriously, is too modest about her appearance, and is too hard on him for his tastes. That being said, Luke does care about her and respects her opinions. Tear's opinion mattered enough to him to try to prove how mature he could be at the ball, and he felt awful about what happened during the superpower event. Honestly, a huge part of the reason why he wants her to lighten up is for her own good. Taking life as seriously as she does will only wear her out, and Luke thinks she's not old enough to have to worry so much, soldier or not.
