Does anyone know anything about Asheville, North Carolina?

I've basically been trying to move to Philadelphia since I graduated from college.  However, it's not worked out yet and and I don't feel particularly drawn to the place, despite my best friend living there.  After (another) frustrating evening of Craigslist searching, I got to thinking ( Read more... )

Asheville, and another town option ... midnightbunny March 25 2009, 11:45:23 UTC
Hi there. Noticed your post in the North Carolina community and thought I'd hop over. Asheville is a great city here in The Carolina's for the things you have mentioned. Another great recommendation is the town of Carrboro, N.C. (over by Chapel Hill), which is another college area similar to the town of Asheville and full of cultural diversity and great things to do year round. Both towns are actually similar in many ways, although Asheville has the added benefit of being in the mountains, and Carrboro is closer to the beaches of the coast of N.C. Both have their benefits. ;)

Asheville has UNC Asheville which helps support the town and it's cultural and further educational options, and Carrboro has UNC Chapel Hill, which does the same thing for it's cultural and educational options and activities. We live near Carrboro, so I'm biased to it a bit, but we go to Asheville often throughout the year to visit the mountain areas and to see the Biltmore Estate, which is incredible. Both towns are only three hours from one another ( ... )

Thank you so much for the quick and informative response! That's all very helpful. I keep hearing about this Biltmore Estate over and over again - I must check this out.

I would be renting an apartment at this point in my life. I'm uncertain as to where I want to end up and I'm looking for something different and exciting right now, but most of all, I'm looking for something kind of temporary in the grand scheme of things.

Everyone I talk to recommends my buying a car if I'm to be living there, but I'm completely uninterested in spending more money that I don't really have on car insurance and maintenance. Is it completely impossible to get around on the public transportation? Is it bad like one friend told me?

I've never even heard of Carrboro, but I will be checking it out...I love the beach probably even more than the mountains, but mountains are pretty damn amazing.

Thanks again for all the info!!!

I hope things will work out for you. N.C. is a great place to live wherever you end up within it. With respect to Asheville, I'm not certain of how "walkable" it is in comparison to Carrboro (or other towns/cities within N.C.), but I will say this about Carrboro ... you can walk everywhere ... even to the neighboring town of Chapel Hill ... safely. There is also a great bus system in place, so you could easily live and work in the area and walk everywhere. Asheville might have the same options in certain areas, although I'm not as familiar with that area.

It sounds like you are doing great research though before your move, so that will definitely help you find your niche in the area. Best of luck. :)

Well, I am totally and completely interested in Carrboro now :) Thanks so much for recommending it to me. I doubt I would have found it otherwise.

I thinkt hat Asheville may not be the right place for me right now if I'm unwilling to buy a car, but Carrboro sounds amazing!

Where exactly do you live, near Carrboro? Was it easy to find a reasonably priced apartment? What about a job? I suppose I could check the university website to see if they have any openings. Would that be my best bet? Should I try any of the galleries or music venues in the area for openings? What do you do?

Eee, I'm all excited :)

Thank you!

I've wanted to move to Sedona forever! That would be amazing. I also think Asheville would be a great fit for you from everything I've heard. Although I would be sad for you not to be closer (but in fact, much farther), my only advice is to follow your heart.

Interesting, I am looking at LA, currently. The state not the plastic nonsense hub of CA...

One thing I suggest is find the local paper links online and READ, what is the news there, what is the opinion page, what is the weather.

If I was there this weekend what would I go do? How much is it ...

How much are the rentals, etc

A,

Asheville is WONDERFUL. It's got a great zoo, it's in the mountains and it's a healthy community. North Carolina is a great state; it's got the mountains, the cities (sorta!), and THE BEACH. It's got everything. I can see you doing well in Boone, which has Appalachian State University... spiffy boho culture there. But Asheville is GREAT!
