Well ideally for the Big Languages I would prefer to have some kind of idea for proper (or at least not heinous) pronunciation, and one of the best ways to do that is to study the romaja/alphabet and start learning basic words. Also the Korean New Wave is freaking amazing and if there's any language I would jump to from Japanese would definitely be Korean. :D
