Driving Lesson

Jan 30, 2005 12:12

This starts off a little slow, but it gets better. I'm not sure I quite captured the essence of the driving practice.

Jen had just come back from her very long day. Something was going on with her family and she had gotten a lot of blood taken by the doctors *cough* vampires. She went straight to her bed. Greg and I were planning on going to the store for some essentials, like hot cocoa.

Greg: Ichi (Jen), do you want to come to the store with us?
Jen: ?
Greg: The store, we're going to Kroger's.
Jen: No, I'm tired, and I'm going back home tonight.
Greg: Do you want anything?
Jen: Maybe a fast break.
Greg: Okay..
Jen: Drive safe, you guys have to come back alive.
...
*Greg turns to me, no joke intended*
- Alicia, do you want to practice driving again?
Me: Hey! Not funny!
*laughter*
Greg: Seriously, you need more practice. We could go to the mall parking lot again.
Me: *sigh* Okay.

Greg, Hannah, and I go to the store. We get our essentials and go back to the college to drop Hannah off.

Greg: Hannah, would you take a fast break up to Jen?
Hannah: Sure
Greg: Thanks Hannah.

Hannah's left and we go to the mall for a driving lesson. I really want to get back to the dorm, though, cause Jen is by herself (even if she is asleep) but Greg really seems set on this lesson, and I need to learn how to drive. I have a bad feeling about leaving, but know that I would also feel bad staying.

We go to the mall.

Greg: What's that?
Me: An M-azing bar.
Greg: Ocha-san (me) you are not eating while driving.
Me: I'm eating before driving. I need to relax with a chocolate bar before I get completely stressed out.
Greg: Okay Ocha san.
Me: Okay. I'm ready.
Greg: Okay, you have to turn on the car, first.
Me: Okay.... I can do this. (I put my hand on the keys in the ignition.... and turn. Car is on and my heart is racing.)
Greg: You know what to do next. You've done this before.
Me:....
Greg: Parking break, Alicia.
Me:...
Greg: Alicia?
Me:... (I reach for the parking break, but it won't give)
Greg: Oh. I put it up too high, let me get it.
Me: I can do it. I can do it.
Greg does it anyway.
Greg: What comes next?
I look at the thingy that allows me to put the car in drive, or reverse, which I needed, being in a parking spot. I don't move.
Greg: C'mon Alicia, put it in reverse.
Me: Sigh. Okay. Reverse.
... ... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. . ..
I finally do it.
Greg: Foot off the break.
Me: Are you crazy?!!
Greg: Ocha chan, you've been in this car before, you've been in this parking lot before. What's wrong?
Me: I don't like cars. Cars are scary. Cars are bad. Me driving is bad.
Greg: Foot off break Alicia, and ease out of the parking space.
I finally do it.
Greg: Okay, if there had been cars there, you would have scraped a few bumpers, but it's fine.
I move through the empty parking lot.
Greg: Turn here
Me: ?!! *deep breath* Okay
I turn
Greg: Okay, that was way too wide a turn, and were you even looking for other cars?
Me: *innocent smile* I knew you were watching, Greg. *sigh* It's an empty parking lot, I would have noticed a car coming a mile away, looking or not looking.
Greg: *sigh* Ocha san
Me: Turn here?
Greg: yeah .... That turn was way too wide, Alicia, you went into the other lane.
Me: I didn't want to hit the curb!
Greg: You're three feet away from the curb, you're not going to hit it!
Me: I'm afraid of the curb.
another turn
Greg: You need to go a little faster, the cars behind you are getting impatient.
Me: *eyes go wide* *squeaky voice* Cars?!
I look behind me... *sigh of relief*
Me: Not funny Greg.
Greg: You do need to go faster, Ocha san. I'm surprised the speedometer is even picking up activity.
Greg: You went into the other lane again.... you're still in it. ... ... if there were cars in those parking spaces, you would have hit them all.
Me: I guess I tried too hard to get back in my lane.
Greg: turn the other way this time.
Me: !!!! There are cars over there!
Greg: and they're going very slowly, because this is a parking lot. Although, you'll have to speed up a little.
Car comes out beside me. Greg gasps. I swerve.
Greg: Alicia! It's just a car.
Alicia: I'm okay with cars. But the way you reacted to that car coming out, I thought I was in place to hit it or something.
Greg: I just was scared because I didn't know how you would react to seeing another car.
Alicia: I reacted fine to the car. I didn't react well to your panicked intake of breath.

lol. I probably would have gasped, too, riding with me in the driving seat.
