Wow! I had missed news for a few days and just found out about this (strange I know but life is a bit of a zoo). If this disruption was in the US it would have had MUCH more coverage.

Yeah, but luckily it's mainly the Intercontinental (and Island) travellers with the problem here. Everyone else can catch a high speed train in the coming days (there's a backlog there too now) or a bus.
It was all began quite curiously gently - I noticed some alerts about delays and limited cancellations and then wham, Eurocontrol is shutting down whole countries and turning back planes coming from the US and Canada.
I transited through again today. Relaxed airline staff (slogan: "check out our website for more details"), stressed railway ticket staff ("I know the queue for International tickets is several hours long, but on the positive side, you wouldn't be able to get on any of the trains between now and then anyway"), and kind of hopeless tourists wandering about with piles of luggage.
