Does anyone at all know what to do when your computer is so f***ed that no desktop icons, task bar or start menu appear when you switch it on, and you then have to use the Task Manager to do everything?

Apart from swear at it/kick it/place old-fashioned voodoo curse on it, etc.

Hold down F8 at startup and pick Safe Mode from the options, then wait for all the weird text to disappear and run antivirus and ad-aware software on it. You could also type in MSCONFIG from the start > run menu and disable a few of the startup services if they look dodgy, but you'd need to know what you were doing or you might make things worse....

Our computer must be well shafted - it won't even start in safe mode!
Either that, or it's so slow it'll take from now until the morning to start up in safe mode...

It basically gets past all the weird texty bit, then once you get past the Windows logon screen it does fuck-all.
