Ficlet: Windsurfing

For the Catalyst verse with knowshowtosurf, who wanted Katie and Brian meeting when younger.

"Brian, slow down! The water will still be there!"

Looking back at his mothers, he started to pout, wishing they would move faster. "But the waves might not be. Come on!"

His mom shook her head. "You know Ma can't go too fast because of the baby. Just wait. We're almost there."

Nodding, Brian finally slowed down and waited for them to catch up. His ma gave him a smile, which caused him to feel bad. The pregnancy had been hard on her, and this was the first time she'd had a chance to get out after having been on enforced bedrest. He supposed that after twelve - nearly thirteen - years of having his moms to himself, he was still getting used to the idea of a baby being around.

They finally made their way down to the beach, where they found a place to sit. As he held his folded up windsurf board and rig, he waited until his mom looked at him and finally nodded.

"All right. Go on."

He grinned and gave each of them a kiss on the cheek. Then he headed down to the water and, after opening up the sail on his board, out into the waves, where before long, he was riding them back to shore.

After a couple of times, he came up on the beach to find a girl several years younger than him watching.

"That looks fun," she said, her accent distinctly British inflected.

"It is," he told her with a grin as he adjusted the sail.

"Can I try?" she asked.

"Have you ever windsurfed before?"

She shook her head, and Brian wanted to tell her that it took quite a while to learn how to hold steady on the board while controlling the sail, but the look on her face was one he couldn't say no to. So he set the board on the sand and motioned her over.

"Let me show you how to stand," he told her before demonstrating. "I'll stand behind you so you won't fall off and control the sail. You just keep hold of the handrail."

Once he was sure she had the hang of it, they out into the water. The first time they tried to stand up, they lost balance and fell off, but after laughing and splashing each other for a bit. This time, they were able to surf for a few minutes, the girl grinning and laughing as Brian dipped them a bit, though not much since he didn't want to lose control.

When they got back to shore, she bounced around a bit. "That was fun. Thank you!"

"You're welcome, uh..."

"Katie. Katie Watley."

"I'm Brian Reilly. I'm glad you liked it."

"I'm going to have to learn that. Or surfing! If I can convince mum and dad," she said before giving him a kiss on the cheek just before a male voice called out for her. "I have to go. Bye, Brian. See you!"

"Bye, Katie. See you later." He waved, not even realizing how he had agreed to seeing her again without thinking.

After she disappeared up the beach, Brian found himself touching his cheek. He then grinned to himself and grabbed his board to go back out into the water.
