I don't think the tutorials are shoddy at all, I got a lot from the Black Swan I requested, so thank you so much!
I'm also stunned that you made that Lavender Blonde icon from that image, I never would've expected that. You really created something gorgeous out of something blah there!
But I hear you on the saving PSDs; it's going to be an absolute bitch for me to try and recreate some of the icons people requested as well, notably that GK one you requested. :p I'm happy to do it and it's going to be a lot of fun, but yeah, it definitely made me realise that saving PSDs is something I should do more often. :)
Thank you for saying that, I'm so glad you got something from these! The whole time I was writing them I was worried somebody was going to call me out for the weird way I go about doing things, lol!
Yeah, that Lavender Blonde icon is probably my favorite out of all the icons I've ever made, if only because I know what it started out as. Plus that was the icon where I actually got serious about using layers masks, and they are a godsend!
Ugh, saving PSDs... they take up sooooo much room, but I feel so guilty when I can't come up with a tutorial just because I was too lazy to create a PSD. These weren't so bad because with some of them I remembered the steps, and with others they were fairly simple so I could find new ways to get the same result, but there were a few icons I just couldn't make again! If that GK icon is going to be too much trouble, you don't have to write a tutorial! I don't want to be a burden to anyone, even if you say it's going to be fun. ♥
he weird way I go about doing things, lol! When I was writing a tutorial the other day, going by the layers of the PSD, I kept thinking "Why does this look so odd and without contrast? Contrast is usually the first thing I create!" And it wasn't until I had written the entire thing that I realised that I move layers up and down all the time, so the sequence of the layers in the PSD was not actually the same sequence I had produced them in, if that makes sense. I felt like such a complete ditz at that moment. *facepalm*
I don't want to be a burden to anyone, It's not a burden, honestly. It's actually the tutorial I look forward to writing most, because it's a challenge to see how close I can get, especially because there were hardly any textures used. But I promise that if I can't get it done, I'll tell you. :)
I haven't gotten around to trying any of the tutorials, but I've read them all and am just in awe of how you use color fill layers to bring out color in icons. I rarely ever use color fill layers and I so feel like knocking myself on the head for that. Thank you so much for taking the time to write these!
I have no idea how you came up with the composition for that Bride icon. The duplicated bars on the bottom and top add so much to the icon, even if they are only 2px in height. Genius icon-making, genius!
I loooove color fill layers, they are so easy to use. From my experience you can accomplish very similar changes with 1 color fill that you could get with a TON of bar sliding in Selective Color or Color Balance. They are the ultimate tool for lazy iconmakers like myself! I'm glad to have written these, thank you for taking the time to read them all, lol.
As for the composition, I'm sure I'm not the first person to do the duplicated bars. Originally I was going to do one of those icons where it's the same picture repeated 3x, sort of like this,
( ... )
That's it, I'm definitely trying out those color fills the next time I open PS, regardless of what image I work on! XD In fact, I'll try anything that will save me from opening adjustment layer after adjustment layer. That's pretty much what I do most of the time, being someone who doesn't know what they want.
I've been trying to implement this repetition effect in my icons lately, but I've been failing. Miserably. Argh, I just can't figure out what will look good and what won't until I try it. When I've finally decided on whether I like how my icon looks like or not, I've already spent an hour slaving over said icon. Most of the time I hate how it looks and just click on the delete button. Frustrating, but I guess I'm just no good at visualizing... Sorry about the rant, but it's hard not to when icon makers like yourself make something so difficult look so easy. XD It's sort of like a wake up call, one that's telling me I've got a long way to go.
"I just can't figure out what will look good and what won't until I try it." I think it's like that for most people, myself included. One thing about tutorials that's misrepresentative of my process is I don't include steps where I'm deleting layers I decided I didn't like, editing adjustment layers, etc. If I included EVERYTHING I do when making and icon (which includes TONS of mistakes, wrong turns and ugly results) these tutorials would be pages long, lol!
These are soo good and helpful! I'm definitely going to do all of these! I just love how creative you are and how perfectly you remade the icons!
There's one thing I wanted to ask. Someone asked me for a tutorial and in the icon she requested I used one of your psd's, after I did some own colouring. But I didn't use all of the layers. So, would you mind if I write the steps out, but also link to your psd? Or should I just try to get a similar result by doing other steps?
Thank you, I'm so glad you thought these were helpful! As for your tutorial, go ahead and write the steps out. I'll be interested to see this, I've never come across anyone using a PSD of mine before, even if they're modified it a lot. I'm so excited! ♥
Yay, so I can start writing the 2nd tutorial. I really hope people will understand what I mean, because my PS is in German and I have to google all the settings :P
Oh my, I never thought about PS being in different languages! This must be a ton of work for you then, if all the settings, labels and tools are totally different.
I know such a pathetically small amount of German, basically all I can say is "Ich kann nicht Deutsch sprechen," and "Darf Ich etwas von diesem Käse?" both of which will be totally useless in the event that I ever eventually make a trip to Germany!
I still love that picture of Frida you chose! I probably could have given it ANY coloring in the world, and it would have looked fine if only because of how beautiful she is!
Oh my goodness, it's stunning! It looks way different from the Frida one, much more colorful and soft! I love the orange-y peach color of her top, and her skin tone looks great! Whatever textures you added really made this beautiful! Ugh, I can't get over how pretty it is. You always make the most gorgeous icons!
