I was over at a friend's house, 'fixing her PC'. I was just in the process of noticing a hidden boot sector when the frantic pounding of socked feet on hardwood sounded, growing louder as they raced towards me. A thirteen year old blonde spikey-haired kid in glasses slid to a halt and looked at the man his mum must've said was 'fixing the computer ( Read more... )

Smart kid.

What distribution was he using?

Back when I worked in a library, I had a similar, but less competent experience. This kid kept trying to use one of the terminals dedicated for searching the library catalog, which used an Internet filter to accomplish this (Probably the only circumstances where I support their use), and would scurry away for a bit whenever he thought people were watching.

After seeing him go through that pattern a couple times, I took a closer look at the machine he kept coming back to. Turns out, he was trying to hack the filter and access the rest of the Internet. Emphasis on the tryng, unfortunately. His failure prevented the machine from accessing anything.

Had he succeded, I would have let him get away with it if he demonstrated exactly what he did.

That was pretty nice of you. You earned the kid's respect by not revealing any of his secrets and respecting his privacy.

And the fist bump was priceless.

LOL Cool Kid! :)

It's nice you didn't rat him out , we all need our little secrets and stuff :)

And god , my parents tried to install (years back) a similar app on the family pc , not only did it block pronz website (not very well) but it pretty much made everything go wrong , from online games to IM and stuff.

I could easily understand that kid's motivation.
