Forewarning: Some information is mixed in with a few things from the light novels as the anime does not cover everything. However, the anime sticks fairly close to the novels and does not alter who Kelpie is. Just explains what the anime leaves.
Kelpie is actually a fairy, a…kelpie to be precise. His true form is a beautiful aquatic black stallion and he is part of the Unseelie Court. In Hakushaku to Yousei, there are two groups of faeries: the Seelie and the Unseelie. The Seelie are more open and helpful to humans, while the Unseelie are more violent and are prone to assault humans. This makes sense for Kelpie as his species will lure humans to the water and drown them to eat later. However, as the love of his life Lydia opposes such actions, he doesn’t eat humans and instead feeds on animals. …He’s not above tricking people and messing with them, however. He still finds humans (except Lydia ♥) to be pretty much stupid and not so much dislikes them as just finds them beneath him.
In the novels, it is said that Kelpie meets Lydia in Scotland (where Kelpies are actually usually found) when she helps his younger brother with his own love problems with a human girl. Since then he’s been pretty much chasing after her, enamored by the idea of having a human girl as a wife, and does have genuine feelings for her.
In both canons, he must bring Lydia the moon to win her over. He kind of cheats. When one of the faeries from the Seelie Court passes by him to deliver the Moonstone ring to Edgar, he actually manages to trick the little fairy to let him see the ring. He then switches the ring with a pebble in the guise of the ring and later brings it to Lydia. The plan fails unfortunately. It gets placed on Paul’s finger instead. But that doesn’t stop Kelpie! He still continues to try and persuade Lydia to ditch Edgar and come away with him.
At one point, Lydia does agree to be with him since she had promised that she would be with him if he saved Edgar from a poison. Having the ability to cure toxins, Kelpie agrees to help, and afterwards takes her to his home in the fairy realm. Though the bastard Edgar comes and takes Lydia back. She then breaks her promise to Kelpie, but rather than be mad, he says he would wait for her until she did not have anything left holding her back to the human world.
The other time he tries to take her away is through her dreams. At this point, it is suggested that Edgar will die soon and rather than have Lydia have to deal with all the drama that would bring, he tries to take her away. He almost succeeds but the Moonstone ring that Lydia has (Edgar had given it to her as an engagement) called the fairy Coblenau who snapped Lydia back to reality. Despite being obviously irritated, Kelpie lets Lydia go to help Edgar, and even comes to their aid later. However, he’s being taken from between the time he lets Lydia go and the time he helps her, so this is where the already semi-short background ends :D
[Personality]
Arrogant, brutal, blunt, rash, a trickster, forceful…Kelpie has all of this, as well as being a pretty good flirt when he is trying to get something. He prefers it when things go his way, but he’s not stupid to realize when sometimes it’s just better to let things go, especially if it’s for the better. And if he believes it. This is more so for Lydia than anything else, though. He doesn’t care for humans much (except for Lydia~) but if they get on his good side, he can care enough about them to help.
He does have a soft side (which is shown only around Lydia) and can be a gentleman and polite. Just. Not that often. He is quick to jump into situations without thinking, believing in his strength and ability (which are rightfully powerful enough to back this up), and will do anything it takes to get his way.
Kelpie hates liver. With a passion. It's his weakness (it's like poison to kelpies). Give it to him, he probably won't notice and take a bite out of it. Then he’ll have a super gag fit and then later try to kill you.
[Specialties/Abilities]
He can change between his fairy form (the huge black stallion) and his human form, and as he is a strong fairy, humans are able to see him. Though he does have the ability to make it so that they can’t.
His eyes have white swirls as pupils, and he can entrance/hypnotize anyone with these, and has other strong magical powers. Most can be perceived as the generic attacks with spiritual energy or whatever, but some of his other more specific abilities include purifying water and cleanse toxins. Of course, he won’t offer his help for just anyone. So don’t expect him to be a semi-healer anytime soon.
As he is of the water, he can traverse through pretty much most large bodies of water, and that is actually where he resides. He can also jump out of large fountains. Kelpie also recovers quickly when in the water. Whenever he jumps into the water, he will change into his water form right before entering, and the same happens when he hops out: first is his horse form and then changes human…if he changes. It’s quite possible for him to not even change.
Aside from his magical abilities, he also has a good bit of physical strength (if him killing a demon dog thing with one hand and by squeezing its head says anything…). As he of the horse, it can be assumed that he also has a lot of endurance as well.
[Affection] If you were Lydia, he'd take anything~ But uh. He's not really much for the touchy feely with other people unless he's trying to get something from them. ...He might be more receptive to girls but still.
