I'm not a big fan. I can deal with MR! when it's being mocking and over the top, but when they try to take it dramatic and personal it just feels fake to me. The rest of it--casting, production design, all that--I think is fantastic. Maybe I just need to watch it again, IDK.
The elephant gets all the best parts of the movie, I swear. My favorite part is either the pitch for "Spectacular Spectacular" or the Roxanne sequence.
Alas, I have only watched two of the four above-mentioned movies, which were Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge!. But if I had to choose between the two, I think I would go for Moulin Rouge!. *braces self for rotten tomatoes*
I really liked the art direction from R+J. All that Catholic imagery, coupled with the Las Vegas-esque gaudiness was brilliant. But I couldn't handle Leo DiCaprio's horrible acting. I don't think Shakespeare has ever sounded so pathetic than when issued from his lips. Actually, I take that back. Keanu Reeves did a pretty horrible job in Much Ado About Nothing.
But anyway, MR gets my vote. At least the acting was decent.
Apparently my flist is stacked against me! I highly recommend Strictly Ballroom. It's a mockumentary-style movie about amateur ballroom dancing in Australia, equal parts hilarious and heartwarming.
I love love love all of R+J, so I think I'm kind of biased toward it. I think Leo's pathos just reinforces Romeo's character and flaws. But like I said, biased. I think it's the best modern adaptation of Shakespeare so far.
And although I hate saying anything negative about Keanu (he just seems like such a decent guy, and he tries so hard), he was pretty bad in Much Ado. But he was cast as such not to ruin the whole movie, and he looked the part. Haha, I really don't think I can say anything bad about Keanu without qualifying it five thousand times. Oops.
I am going through the whole Red Curtain Trilogy this weekend (SB, R+J, MR!) and I'm hoping maybe to understand what Baz was aiming for in MR!, if it's part of a loose arc. Maybe I won't totally cringe at the end anymore.
