Hey, folks - given that my committee agreed to let me defend in August and my first grant deadlines will be in September, my postdoc advisor thinks I should visit Rutgers during the summer to work on proposals

Newark is by far the best. All airlines usually go there, but I guess not Southwest, which surprises me.
Are you thinking you might rent a car? Philly will be about an hour and a half drive from N.B., so a NYC airport would be a better option (the city is about 40 minutes by car, but not sure about the airports). I'm not sure what the bus or train situation is from La Guardia because I've never used anything but Newark, but there are probably some options. And if you are taking the train, if someone can pick you up there is a station right in New Brunswick (though not every train stops there - be sure to pick the right one), but it's not in a great neighborhood and there's almost no parking so you shouldn't use that train station if someone would need to park a car. MetroPark is about 20 minutes away on the highway and is a bigger, more heavily used train alternative.
Also, I've never flown into Newark and then NOT had someone pick me up, since my family is right there, so I'm unfortunately not totally sure of what other form of public transportation makes the most sense between the airport and N.B. Probably the train or a bus. If your postdoc advisor is covering your expenses so that renting a car is reasonable (or if it works out to be cheaper than other transport, or not much more), that might still be the best way to go.
If I happen to be in NJ visiting the family when you come in, I'd be happy to pick you up!
Southwest is slowly building their northeast business; I think Philly was added like two years ago. (My ulterior motive for flying in or out of Philly would be to sneak in a visit with Peicha.) One of my real "problems" is finding carriers that will come into Tucson - looks like US Air and United both go to Newark from here.
I hadn't thought about renting a car - but it might be really smart to do that, since it's a great opportunity to check out places to live.
Thanks for the train info, too - it'll be important for getting around once I've moved.
Well, in that case, I live just outside of Philly and often visit the fam in East Brunswick. If you come in over a weekend (or even a long weekend) when I'm in town, carpooling to NJ might work out great.
I'll be gone a few times over the summer, though, so this would depend on whether or not I'm in the area. And I probably wouldn't be able to drive you all over New Brunswick to look at apartments - I'd most likely drop you off, go visit family and local friends, and then pick you up to drive back. But let me know if you want to do this, and if so when you think you'd visit...
lol. Fly into Philly!!! As long as it's not the end of July (we'll be in Chicago), Mark & I can pick you up and chauffeur (one way, at the very least).
Generally though, transit in and around the the tri-state area is pretty comprehensive, as far as I am aware. Between all the available options, you can definitely get from place to place via public transportation.
Well, then, I should probably call you tomorrow for that reason, too. :-D I am totally going to try to take advantage of this moving thing to sneak in some time to go visiting.
We're on a three hour time difference from you right now, so I don't see myself calling you before 11am your time. ;-)
