Okay, this is one I just learned last summer: sunglasses are giant because you need more lens area to block the sun from the top of your eyes! Having never been able to afford prescription sunglasses before the advent of online glasses stores, I had no idea why everyone is always wearing enormous 70s sunglasses.

...and you thought your childhood glasses were too big. ;-)

It's actually pretty funny that I've thought a lot about sun exposure from the side, having had glasses that had side panels, but other than being told to wear a hat and sunglasses in Tucson, I never really thought about exposure from the top.
