We landed yesterday about 9:45 pm local time (aka 3:45 home time). We got our luggage and then headed to get the shuttle to take us to the car rental place. And that's when things started to go a little downhill and I got very cranky from doing too much on too little sleep (see post below for why I was seriously sleep deprived).
We get to the counter and P stays in line while I stand by the luggage. We were supposed to have rented a full size car from Fri 19-Tue 23. Apparently, when he booked the car online, something got screwed up and they had us renting the car from the 15-16. So no car. We ended up with a jeep wrangler - the back windshield doesn't fully unzip, but it drives, holds us and our luggage. And quite honestly, it feels more in keeping with the beach-y feel of everything than a full sized sedan would.
It's now nearly 11pm local time and we head for the hotel. We get lost - thanks to Google maps and the fact that Hawai'i does not feel the need to label highway numbers on their street signs. When we finally get to the hotel, it turns out I forgot to say we would be a late check in, so we lost our ocean view king size room. We got a garden view two double beds and the promise that they would try to change in for us the next day aka today. We decided not to unpack and finally got to bed around 12:30.
I had to get up at 5:30 am because conference registration started at 6:30. I wasn't sure quite what to wear, so I went with a short sleeve nice blouse type thing, grey pants and wore my grey suit jacket over it. It turns out I didn't need to be quite so formal, but clothing ranged from shorts and tee shirts to full suits.
The conference itself was very interesting. I attended a panel discussion on economics, that included a very timely discussion on health care reform. The afternoon session was a discussion of a joint venture between the IARS (International Anesthesia Research Society) and the FDA regarding anesthesia safety in children called the SAFE Kids project. I won't get into the technical details, because it will probably bore most of you, but suffice it to say I found the whole thing fascinating.
That discussion finished up around 3:45 and I met up with P. We went to pick up my poster from the business office where I had it shipped and headed back to our room. At this point I had all but given up on a room change. I was relaxing and getting ready to change for dinner tonight, when the phone rang - we got our room change. So I took some pictures out of the old room, we re-packed all the stuff P had started to unpack and moved. We're on the 10th floor now, but that's OK. I could tell that whoever was in the room before was a smoker (I could smell it in the air despite this being a non-smoking room). I'm betting they were out on the balcony.
So we opened up the sliding door to the balcony to air it out and I got caught up on some of my internets. And took some really good surfing shots (I think). I'll post some to somewhere later, maybe facebook, maybe the me.com page.
Right now I've got to finish unpacking and then we're off to dinner. We're going to
Sam Choy's Breakfast Lunch and Crab for dinner and I'm really looking forward to it.
