Laura Roslin glared at the front page of the New York Times in disbelief. Her own stern visage--below the fold, thank God--stared back. “Senator Adar: Concerns With Judicial Nominee Not Personal,” screamed the headline. She scooped up the paper and threw it off her desk in the general direction of the trash can. Not that that solved her immediate problem; her desk still contained the day's Newark Star-Ledger, which was plastered with the same photo along with the headline, “Adar Questions Qualifications of Federal Magistrate.” Still, it had made her feel a little better, so she swept that one off her desk in a dramatic gesture, as well.
“Honey?” she called, her normally strong voice wavering. He came into the room clad only in boxers and an undershirt, wiping his jaw with a hand towel.
Laura just looked at him with a dejected expression on her face.
He wrapped an arm around her waist and led her to the overstuffed leather loveseat beneath the picture window. Early-morning sunlight streamed over them.
Stroking her hair and gently nuzzling her, he asked, “You want to tell me what’s happened this morning that’s got you so worked up?”
Her body tensed as she spoke with unconcealed contempt. “Senator Adar issued a press release saying that he’s objecting to my nomination because he has concerns about my legal acumen. I didn’t get to be a federal judge by not knowing the difference between strict scrutiny and rational basis review!”
“Laura. You and I both know that the man is a moron.” And a corrupt one at that, Bill thought uncharitably. “That’s why he’s in politics.”
Unshed tears filled her beautiful green eyes. “Why is he doing this?” she despaired. He didn’t have to respond to her rhetorical question. They both knew the answer.
