So last month I bought myself a birthday present: the entire collection of The Incredible Hulk on computer disk. It's pretty sweet. Today I bought a cactus with a green stalk and pink bulbous top. I had a few of these as a kid and used to really like them, so, nostalgia purchase. Of course the former ones eventually died because I didn't water them enough (which really says how badly I neglected them -- I mean, how hard is it to kill a cactus?): hopefully this one will fair ( Read more... )

I honestly can't decide whether this is insultingly bad or comedy genius.

A few months ago I was in a library book sale and snagged a copy of The Moon and Sixpence by W Somerset Maugham. It's based on Gauguin, and follows a London stockbroker called Strickland who one day decides to ditch his family and become a starving artist, eventually dying of leprosy in Tahiti. Today is the Ides of March, aka the day Julius Caesar was asassinated by a group of senators. As a kid it always seemed a little ridiculous to me, but over time (thank you history minor) I've learned that ridiculous was part of the everyday in Roman politics.

Today, pause and consider some of the wonderful hijinks which ensued in Rome.
