It occurs to me that if you're going to call someone out on incorrect word usage, you should probably make sure that said word usage is actually incorrect first. It's not that hard to go to dictionary.com or crack open a good old Websters hardbound dictionary and double check. Bonus - you might actually learn something ( Read more... )

Can't stand it when I see that. PM them if it's such a big deal - I'm sure most authors would welcome the help - but whenever I see it, it's always done really snarkily and meanly, and I really hate that. And if they're not even right in their correction...urghhh...

Yeah, I know. I found this gem in a community where their thing is they dissect works paragraph by paragraph. Usually the ones I read are critiques done on published works.

I don't know why people do that in public, I mean it just makes them look stupid. But I suppose that is exactly why they do it - BECAUSE they are stupid!

They are bullies and feel the need to put someone down. It's sad really, that they can't just enjoy a fic without being an ass about something as simple as a word they obviously don't know.

People just have no clue anymore.

But the thing is, they are trying to put someone down but by being so ignorant they just expose themselves to ridicule. Sad inadequates.

I just think, especially if you're going to be posting a public critique of someone's work, make sure all your ducks are in a row. I got to the part where they were all "is that even a word?" and it made me not want to finish reading the critique. Especially when said critique is a collaboration between three different people. Some one could have looked it up. That was just laziness.

I had a plural issue with someone once.. Over ocupi.. it ended badly for them because I did my research before using it. ;)

It's kind of satisfying when it ends up like that, isn't it? LOL I do so much research on words when I'm writing - like if I'm not 100% sure it means what I think it does I go looking. Or I use a different word.

My eldest brother once tried to call my best friend out for using the word "referentially". It took some doing, but we finally found the word in one of my grandfather's old dictionaries. Apparently it's not included in the new dictionaries because pretty much no one uses it. Even now Google Chrome is putting a red squiggly under it.

Oh but spellcheckers are often useless - like you say, when in doubt, check a proper dictionary! Words are wonderful, the English language is so rich and versatile, I love that there are still people who take the time to use its full potential amid the morass of text-speak.

And that is why it's great to have a beta! What really bothered me about this one was that it was a critique done paragraph by paragraph of this fic by three different people, all of them weighing in with their own opinions. Usually it's valid things they're pointing out, but I was just surprised because out of three people not one of them could be bothered to look it up? Really?

I love it when people do that :D It gives me an excuse to correct their spelling, smile, and walk away.
