I have family in Wenatchee, so I've been kept informed about the fires and I was so sorry to hear about the firefighters being killed. It takes a special kind of commitment and bravery to protect others' lives and property in the face of really terrifying circumstances. Those fallen firefighters, and all the ones that are still at it, are heroes.
I hadn't heard, how terrifying! It must feel like you are in the middle of an apocalypse. I hope you and your brother stay safe and no more lives are lost.
It did have a definite apocalyptic feel to it. Spooky. It's a little better here today. I actually saw blue sky! Things are slowly improving fire-wise around here but all it takes is some imbecile with a cigarette butt to start it all up again.
I came here via milly_gal's signal boost and just wanted to say that I can totally relate, living in a highly forested area that's on constant wildfire watch 24/7 for weeks now. In 1975 a giant fire destroyed a lot of the forests around here and killed 5 firefighters only two villages over. The tragedy has been commemorated just recently on its anniversary and the detailed accounts were harrowing, to say the least. That's one of the many reasons why I hate summer, especially hot and dry ones just like this. I pray for everyone's safety in the affected areas ... those brave men are heroes!
The only good thing about summer, in my opinion, is being able to go swimming in the river - and I can't even do that now, because the fire planes are scooping out water to dump on the fire so the place I usually go to is a firemen's camp. I am so ready for a cold, rainy autumn!
I hope your present situation has relaxed a bit and that they have some sort of control over the fires. What makes me sad is that Germany is not reporting on it, not even a note in passing. Sure, California gets mentioned every time but who cares about Washington? *hmph* Journalism isn't always as unbiased as it should be...
They are slowly starting to get a handle on the fires. And we have rain in the weather forecast (I hope they're right)! I wish I could say I was surprised about the journalists not reporting on it, but I'm really not. If the situation was reversed I don't know that the journalists here would cover it either.
I hope that the fire does not change too many lives
My Aunt and Uncle live near Spokane, and, as of yesterday, the fire was 45 minutes away from their very remote home. They live in the middle of a very dry Prairie. The hint of a change in the wind direction could change their lives! Never have they listened to the weather reports with such rapt attention.
God bless and protect the men and women risking their lives to protect them
Oh, goodness, do they live out by the Springdale-Hunters fire (aka Carpenter Fire)? That thing is huge and terrifying. My parents live out in a pretty remote spot south of Springdale, and they had a comparatively small fire at the beginning of July.
I don't know exactly where the house is. Just really remote, miles from anywhere. My mum is reporting back to the family, she's in Scotland and i'm in England. She's getting sporadic info from her twin sister.
My aunt will be on her way over to Scotland in a few days to visit my mum, getting her out of the line of fire! The trip was planned months ago, but the timing is fortuitous to say the least!!
My parents are okay. The fire is still a good ways from their place, but I do have a friend who lives on the Spokane Indian Reservation who is packed up and ready to evacuate if the flames head her way.
It's defintely fortuitous that your aunt is heading to Scotland! I'd get away myself if I could, lol. I did see that there might be some rain in the forecast, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
