Loved your recap.

Thank you. :)

You're comment about Elena definitively going to heaven reminded me of one of the delena-songs, in ep 18 of season 2 'Last kiss', where the singer sings about his love gone to heaven and he has to be good now so he can join her in heaven when he dies. It's all about redemption and still fits perfectly to the s8 arc of Damon, because even when he becomes human again thanks to the cure, he still has to redeem himself to be able to be with Elena forever, i.e. even after death.

Ooh, that's a good point! Yeah, that's why I think redemption has to happen because I can't see the show saying, hey, Damon (and Stefan) are going to roast in hell for all eternity. There's your happy ending!

I was also wondering about Bonnie's reaction to the tuning fork. Why did she loose her witch powers again? Was it because of the medication or her short hunter-episode that overrode her witchy-ness? If a) than maybe the medication is finally out of her system now, if b) maybe she just hasn't tried doing magic ever since, but ( ... )

I know that the show has deviated wildly from the source material, but in the books Bonnie was psychic, so maybe they are bringing that little bit of her origins forward for the show as well. I think that the world might need for there to be two sirens. Sirens have to be psychic. One's dead and there might be a void that needs filling. Remember, Bonnie was not affected by the Siren call in the beginning. It was one of the things that led us to believe that women were immune to it. Maybe she's immune because it is in her to be a siren. It wouldn't be the first time she's been changed into a different thing. She was the gateway for dead spirits to pass through to the other side, so I think something in her might be open to being altered for mystical purposes. If she is a siren not created by Cade, her singing might then work against him and being what ultimately defeats him ( ... )

They may be, Bonnie did mention specifically about Grams saying that witchery is rooted in psychic ability.

None of the Sirens are dead. Sybil may have briefly died, but that was after we saw Bonnie react to the tuning fork. And she made a deal with Cade that she'll come back, live her long, beautiful life. That was her deal. Seline is still alive also.

Remember, Bonnie was not affected by the Siren call in the beginning.

I don't know that Bonnie has heard it before now doing its thing. Maybe I'm forgetting.

"So, yup, nothing that we heard about Monterey in this episode contradicted what has been said in the past." - Heh, true! I also scrutinized this scene against what we've heard of this before, and you're right, they didn't really wander into the inconsistency territory at any point.

I know that a lot of people accused the show of playing fast and loose with their show's history here, but they really did not.

The scene was rather "flat", so to speak. Then again, maybe we should take into consideration the fact that it wasn't happening in real time (like Klaus' massacre), it wasn't even a regular flashback. It was someone recalling the past, so perhaps the POV influenced the intensity of the recollection.I don't know, I still think you're pure joy at watching TVD again is influencing your take on stuff (and I can totally see why), but something THAT horrific that Stefan did SHOULD have not come across as ho-hum no matter how it was recalled. Heck, the brief recall that we've had up to now of the Monterey event -- which have just been ( ... )

Exactly, it was so very underplaying. And this whole 'Ripper of Monterey' has been built up since the s2 finale. That's a LONG time to build up as something so terrible and horrific and it just fell so flat.

"So if they weren't going to figure why Damon wasn't able to, again, why that repetitive conversation? Unless… the point was to remind viewers about that very fact." - Yes, I think the point might have been to remind us about it, not necessarily the gang.

Alas, there was no point. That was never brought up about the fact that the only reason that Enzo was able to break free of Sybil was because of all he had gone through as an Augustine vampire. That's another thing that did disappoint about this season. Ah well.

"I keep pointing that out, but the fact that Damon isn't using "kill" instead of "murder," I think highlights just how very wrong he found their action." - Yes, it was very noticeable.

But again, it led nowhere. Alaric (nor Matt--although, it's really Ric I hold accountable here since Damon *did* kill Tyler) never apologized to Damon, never acknowledged that Damon was the one who saved his daughters and yet Ric killed him for doing that. UGH!

"Going back to my earlier point, though, Damon was wrong when he said that Matt ( ... )

Did the writers make some kind of decision regarding that? If so, why? Or was it rather accidental snow-ball effect that eventually no one knew how to properly fix?

Or did it slip through the cracks? I just don't know. It saddens me greatly though. It is my biggest regret of my biggest show-related regret: Alaric's return.

"Stefan truly is what brought all of them back to Mystic Falls... Damon*, Katherine, Isobel, Elijah, the other Mikaelsons, etc." - Hm, yes, you're right. That's true. On the second thought, yes, I agree.

Uh huh.
