The "You" fics are no more!

I'll repeat that. The "You" fics, which have plagued fans of Pirates of the Caribbean at fanfiction.net and which have, until now, comprised an estimate fifth to a third of all PotC fanfiction at the Pit of Voles, are banned in no uncertain terms.

Heard about this on GAFF, and great was the rejoicing amongst everyone there, as well. I haven't had the exposure to them that you have, but I'm still pleased about it. I can imagine that you are dancing in the streets with trumpets and great fanfare! Whoo hoo! Awesomeness!

*shoves Quen, Tiranel, and Melanin over* They'd like to join the party, if they may. If only (in Mel and Tiranel's case) to get out of having to do quite so many You!canon 'Sues in *their* DTE work. Quen just likes the party, and the party-givers. And the cause for celebration, yes. Whoohoo!

They weren't all bad... were they? I mean there had to be a you fic that was good... I mean.. I think I read a few that we good you fics...

Side note: ot: The girl from Kansas is pissed.. they remove my band stuff.. but noone elses... *eyetwitch* FF.NET is a bautch! BOOTCH and B***H!... Looks around. But they are cracking on badly written stories... *wonders back to Kansas*.

I have read a few well written You stories. Ebony wrote 3. 1 was finished. The one was called 'Call of the Caribbean' Yes.. I was skeptical when I started reading it. Female pirate.. working in a bar.. washing dishes?... It doesn't jump tenses, Jack is in Cannon. Goes along with movie yes.. but it's not bad.

I'm going to preface this with a qualifier that I should have put above my previous post:

When I say "You" fics, I mean the "You" stories starring an original character. I have seen a well-written "You" story done from the view of a canon character. It's the only good second person fic I've ever encountered in fanfiction. It's also the only "You" fic I've ever seen done from a canonical's POV. The rest are all OCs.

I'll admit I haven't ready Ebony's fanfics, so I can't testify to whether they were bad or not. There are two "You" fics I've come across that were not absolutely godawful. One was the first "You" fic written in the PotC fandom, and the second had godawful logic until the author responded to my constructive criticism.

My problem with "You" fics is that I believe that they are, by their nature, unsuited to fanfiction. Why? The story becomes all about the second person narrator right from the get-go, instead of focusing on, y'know, the actual PotC story and the characters that were ( ... )
