Okay, so there’s this Sue I ranted about a couple of entries earlier. You know, the one who stole Jack’s ship. I read the fic through, and discovered it was even more irritating than that: she stole Jack’s ship, along with many other pirate ships in the past, in order to teach “bigheaded” pirates a LESSON. I’ll now take this time to remind you ( Read more... )

Huh. A nice author, crappy sue. That sucks. As for what to do I don't know. Never had that happen to me. Have you posted on the PPC board about it? This can't be first time this has happened, probably. Have to say, your concrit is superlative wish I could influence the Suethors so well.

*reads "disclaimer"* Why is all the "Commodore Norrington is so not cool omg" so cute and popular amongst fangirls? I like that character a great deal. *sighs*

Hm... I would suggest two things. First, that she finish the fic (even as OOC and illogical as it is) espically if it's her first fanfic, just to gain confidence as a writer and to exhibit closure. Then, once she's written something better, maybe she would be willing to take it down and hide it on a disk somewhere like we all do with out first fics, just to look back and see how much we've improved. :P Secondly, that she start a new fic, with a logical, complete story line in place /before/ she begins. Perhaps you would be willing to double-check it for her before she starts writing? (Maybe you could offer her one of the plotbunnies from the PPC newsletter?) ::plunks in her two cents:: ok... now I'm done ^_~

It's both awesome (from the larger viewpoint) and a pain (from the "let's PPC!" viewpoint) when someone reforms. :) I'm glad she's happy for criticism, and takes yours well. (Good crit, too, btw.) I wonder if you could handle it by mentioning it in one of your other PPC fics, but not actually killing the 'Sue in a story? Like mention that you or Jira & Leigh had done this ship-stealing 'Sue, and what Captain Jack's response had been once he was de-'Sued. Or something. Obviously a lot more Mary Sues are assassinated than actually make it into PPC stories, right? So you could refer to it having been done, or, say, to someone trying to figure out whether it should be done, without having to actually PPC it. Unless of course you do decide that ship-stealing is too much fun to pass up....

Hugs and smiles,
Nenya

Yes, you're right. It would seem two-faced to PPC something when you'd corresponded with the author and she'd received your crit...I had a Faramir-bashing author whom I was set on PPCing, a while back, but she was decent when I talked to her. I never did get around to PPCing the story, partly because it would have felt...wrong...to do that after I'd come off all helpful in the first place.

The 'Sue whose story got deleted while Rosie and Nenya were in it, though, was someone who a) repented and b) never finished the story. I had the story deleted in the middle as a compromise--we never *did* kill the 'Sue, but we commented on it, and did all the usual snarky PPCness. (Plus, I got to do a couple of different Viggo Mortensens. Hee.)

Argh, though...one should at least have the name of one's ship decided on before one posts the story! Titles can be hard, though. Still...they're necessary.

Best luck. :)
