Job Offer Duplicity

I just had a weird experience. My two talent agents, both called me - within minutes of each other - offering me work. And it turns out to be the same job ( Read more... )

That's weird. Couldn't you just tell the company both agents suggested you and split the commission?

hmm that's an idea... Nah, they work for different companies and they have different systems. easier to go through one.

What I'll do is with agent S who also has his own web consulting company on the side, I'll do work for him in that capacity, which is how I got started, but not for the one he works for atm if there is some overlap with agent B's agency.

Hey, it COULD be good to get a referral from both, it MIGHT actually give you more bargaining power, since more than one source is recommending you ;)

Yes, that's true. But in the long run, in order to get more work, its better to work out a something to everyone's benefit, which means both will be more ready to take me on in future. Spreading good karma now ensures more work in the future.

This is why I don't understand cut-throat competitiveness. It doesn't make sense. Maybe at a impersonal, corporate level but not on a small scale such as freelancing. In this position, strong positive relationships with your agents is essential.
