Question, and maybe I'm just an asshole but...

Am I the only person who doesn't feel any -guilt- for all the atrocities that have occurred in the past? I -hate- that horrible disgusting shitty things have happened to people but I don't see any point in feeling bad for what my ancestors did. I never owned/transported/sold slaves. I never killed or beat anyone (never even been in a fight). I ( Read more... )

Nope. I think we need to get over it--by no certainty forget about it/pretend it never happened/deny it ever happened, and defiintely learn from it (though we can't seem to learn from anything), but we need to keep going.

no you shouldn't feel guilty, but your defensiveness is a classic response of white people who take those kinds of courses who are passively racist. You needn't feel defensive or feel like you have to go on a crusade to make a point that you are not responsible for slavery because you aren't. But I still think you could learn a lot from that class.

I only feel a bit defensive lately because it's been coming up in various social circles in regards to various events. I'm confused by what you're saying when you say "class" and "courses" because this is a response to people not to a class. And this goes beyond issues of race as well, as not all brutal acts that have taken place throughout history have had to do with race. This spreads into sexuality, gender, religion, and other topics as well.

not alone...
people would rather talk about and live in the past and the future...ignoring the here and now. Humans are a strange breed. Now is all we have, and we squander it reminiscing and projecting. Crazy... life is too precious a gift.
History ignored repeats itself...there are lessons in the past, but to the degree many people obsess in it is just plain stupid.
