Can Chubbiness Group Survive?

We all know Japan prides itself on having one of the lowest obesity rates in the developed world. However, a recent trend known as "marshmallow girls" (girls who are viewed as 'soft') is receiving mainstream attention from the likes of Avex who created a group called "Chubbiness." Made up of 10 plus sized women found through open casting, the group ( Read more... )

As a Japanese girl myself, I really hope that they will succeed. It's very sad that in my country, people (it's really mostly girls&women) think that they have to be as thin as a rake, to be called "beautiful" and "worthwhile"! There is soooo much pressure on them, not only from society, but even from family and friends. People who should love and care for them, no matter how they look!
It's important, that especially young girls have role models to look up too and that tell them that it is totally okay to not look superskinny. As long as you eat healthy food and exercise, everything is fine! Instead of putting people in categories like "too thin", "thin", "average", "fat", "too fat", we should make sure that they are healthy!!!

I totally agree on the last part!! Medically any kind of extreme is unhealthy and should be avoided but most people are somewhere inbetween and pressuring them into any type of body shape/look is just not right. Health and happiness should be advertised and valued above all and neither should bigger people be labelled "fat" nor should skinny women be told off as "unreal". It's like creating problems where there are none to begin with.

With that being said I find the group name rather unfortunate....

The first thing I thought of was the group Piggy Dolls, which they also mentioned in the video, and how messily that ended up.

What is their market? Who does it appeal to? Younger girls? I can't see the majority of males taking much interest. I don't think it will be easy for them, as they will probably remain a super niche group. Although I suppose it says they are having trouble gathering interest to make a debut.

The thing I really disliked about Piggy Dolls, and this group, is that their main concept is being fat, rather than that being just a side trait.
It's in their name, and they talk about things like how much they like to eat. Instead of finding it endearing or likeable, I find it rather offputting that they use being fat as a gimmick, instead of being a normal group with a different concept and happen to also be fat.

Still, it's interesting to see that this came into being at all, and I hope they do manage something, as maybe it could be the start of something...

I can see some guys being into the group. After all, there are males who prefer 'bigger girls'. But that won't be enough and I agree that it'll still be a super niche group.

I also agree that they could go instead with the concept that they formed the group because the girls are all alike, physically, but they shouldn't push the 'fat' aspect constantly.

I don't much like that one Piggy Doll group - I would imagine that having your entire singing career being based upon being perceived as fat would eventually become disheartening, especially with the negative feedback corroboarting it. Why not just have that be one trait and not make your weight a thing?

The girls in Chubbiness aren't even fat! They look normal and healthy, and again, the idea of shoving it down people's throats LOOK WE'RE FAT OMG LOOK AT HOW CHUBBY WE ARE feels just... odd. It comes off more as a gimmick rather than focusing on actual talent, and it can't be good for any of the girls' esteem.

idk, I can't with that name. I don't get why they can't just have these girls in a group/groups without their ~signature image~ revolving around their weight.
