So tonight I went with Cristina and little Luna to my first Quinceañera. A Quinceañera, apparently, is a celebration of a Latina girl's 15th birthday/womanhood/dedication to god. This one was held in LaBelle, 30 minutes outside of Immokalee. It was all fancy, with the girl-of-honor in a formal bridal-type dress, and white tableclothes with lavender

i have often felt the same about my own lack of culture... which is probably why i tend to latch on so tightly to that of others'.
maybe we should start some kind of eastern european/whatever else culture block in which we celebrate the traditions that our ancestors once had, but which we no longer practice due to the ugly face of forced assimilation and unacceptance? long live the melting pot?
