Teacher Ed students have left me in despair!

I'm now of the opinion that all teaching candidates should have a mandatory class in logic. Never before have I seen such inane, illogical writing in my life. The process seems to be 1) look at the question, 2) make random sweeping generalization, 3) put in random quotes/paraphrases from the text to "support" your "argument," 4) expect good grade.

I've met lots of essays which have been 'written' like that in my time...

Afraid so... some JYAs are really good, and others not. Much like everyone else, really; but a lot of the students have had little to no essay practice before coming to Oxford.

At least, that's how it's been taught. Sadly.
