OOC: Just a quick bio on the fortune-teller's assitant.
Name: Meng
Age: 11 or 12.
Gender: Female
Likes: Despite the fact that she's Aunt Wu's servant, Meng loves to cook. She's actually managed to improve on Aunt Wu's bean-curd puff recipie. The young girl loves to talk with the people who come to Wu for a reading, and finding out what fortunes they have been told. Meng especially likes hearing the fortunes of others' love lives, as she is something of a romantic.
Pet Peeves: Like any girl her age, Meng isn't pleased with the way she looks and doesn't think anyone would find her attractive (it doesn't help that Aunt Wu isn't exactly encouraging toward her). She also greatly dislikes being ignored.
Romantic Interests: She's still carrying a torch for Aang, but it's a very dim torch now. She realizes that Aang will probably never see her as more than a friend, and she's conceded defeat to her "rival" Katara. The fact that, in this new world, Aang doesn't seem to recognize or remember her, is also something of a crushing blow.
History: Meng was the daughter of two Earth Kingdom traders who traveled from village to village. When she was nine they stopped in a small village at the base of Mt. Makaharu. While there, Meng's mother had her fortune told by Aunt Wu who warned her that her life was in danger should she continue to live a traveling merchant's life. Meng's mother paid Aunt Wu no heed. A couple days later Meng's family was leaving the village by way of the forest when they crossed paths with a small regiment of Fire Nation soldiers. The soldiers got into an argument with Meng's father, which quickly escalated to a fight. Terrified Meng ran back to the village, hoping to round up help for her parents. By the time she had convinced several men to come back with her, her parents were dead. Meng was now an orphan, but no one in the town was willing to take her in. Finally Aunt Wu came forward and named herself Meng's new guardian, claiming that it had been foretold to her.
For the next three years or so Meng grew up under Aunt Wu's wing, but she was treated more like a servant girl than a daughter or other family member. Every day Meng had a list of chores she was expected to complete, and as she got older the list only got longer. By the time she was about eleven or twelve, Meng was welcoming customers into Aunt Wu's home and playing the part of hostess. One of the highlights of her job was hearing from others what Aunt Wu had seen in their futures. Maybe it was because Meng's own future didn't look that bright; she'd had her fortune read by Aunt Wu only once, and among the things she had been told was that she was destined to marry a boy with large ears.
Then one day three foreigners arrived in the village - a pair of siblings from the Water Tribe, and the Avatar. The Avatar and Katara, the only girl of the trio, both wanted their fortunes told by Aunt Wu. Meng was instantly smitten with the Airbender, and took notice of the fact that he had rather big ears. She abandoned her duties to spend the rest of the day following Aang and his friends around town, trying to get the Avatar's attention. Unfortunately her efforts went unnoticed; even worse, Aang was paying more attention to Katara. Meng realized finally that she'd been beaten, but didn't let this stop her from helping Aang by giving him Aunt Wu's cloud-reading book. She parted with the trio as friends, but called Katara a "floozy" as soon as they were out of earshot. Later that evening Meng was severely punished by Aunt Wu for forgoing her responsibilities to stalk "that boy."
Several days later the village was visited by Prince Zuko and General Iroh. The men were accompanied by a bounty hunter named Jun whose beast could track its prey purely by smell. Fear for her friends' safety won out over jealousy, and Meng hid Aunt Wu's cloud-reading book so that the bounty hunter could not get the Avatar's scent.
Personality - Good Points: Meng is a very cheerful girl and a good listener, and often provides a listening ear when Aunt Wu's customers want to gush about their fortunes. She doesn't give up easily, as proven by her dogged pursuit of Aang through the episode "The Fortuneteller".
Bad Points: As mentioned before Meng isn't that thrilled with her physical appearance and is constantly comparing herself to the other women and girls of the village. She is especially annoyed by her hair, and its tendency to defy gravity. Her determined nature is a double-edged sword, because she will probably drop everything to devote all of her time to one thing.
Fashion Statement: A long pink robe with purple trim on the edges and sleeves, a white underskirt and purplish-red shoes. The robe appears to be half a size to a size too large for her.
Physical appearance: Meng has the light brown skin typical of Earth Kingdom natives, and brown eyes. Her hair is dark brown and pulled back in two large, braided pigtails that tend to stick out in the air almost sideways. There is a gap in her teeth from where one of her upper front teeth was knocked out after a particularly hard fall.
Anything: Meng's a tad uneasy around Aang in the New World, even after she discovers that he's come from a time in which he hasn't met her yet. She still has a crush on him, but this time around Meng tries not to act too forward in the hopes that she won't scare him off.
Note: A lot of Meng's history is conjecture on my own part, and should not be considered canon.
