“I’m losing my mind…” Nino thought one day. He stared at the blue sky above him. Looking at the white puffy clouds that drifted by slowly made him felt at ease, sometimes. Nowadays, it had become some sort of habit to him to be on the school roof. The students hardly come to the place because there are rumors of a student committed suicide back then. But that still didn’t stops Nino to come to the roof whenever he wanted to clear his mind.

For almost a year, this place had become Nino’s secret’s sanctuary, until….

“Nino-chaaaaaannnn!” a too cheerful voice suddenly snapped Nino back from his trance. Nino tilted his head to find the source of the voice only to found Aiba’s head with his goofy smile stuck on his face.

“Nino-chan, come…let’s eat!!”

Nino let out a sigh while rubbing his temple. “No thanks…I don’t feel like eating…besides, I didn’t bring my bento…”

“Oh, it’s ok…I already brought it for you!” Aiba waved Nino’s bento with his right hand while the other was holding the rusted stairs, keeping himself from falling down.

Nino was about to counter back but was cut short when he heard another familiar voice coming from below.

“Hurry up and come down will you?! I’m hungry!!”

It should be just a piece of cake to pissed off Jun, but Nino didn’t feel like it today so after letting out another heavy sigh he lazily got up and climbed down the stairs.

Nino watched his two bestfriends heading towards one spot near the fences where they usually enjoyed their bentos during recess. Nino sigh again, the school roof now had become their place instead of his place about two months ago. They usually had their lunch in the classroom but when Aiba found out about Nino’s so-called sanctuary, all three of them had been hanging out at that place ever since.

“You did what???” both Nino and Jun screamed in unison, bits of rice showering the ever cheerful Aiba.

“Are you kidding me?” Jun the first one to recover after almost choking on his half-eaten rice ball.

“You know nothing about soccer Aiba!” Nino followed seconds after, pounding his chest, trying to swallow his rice ball.

“It’s not that hard, all I have to do is kick the ball into the goal right?!” Aiba answered simply with that goofy smile still hanging on his face.

“Why don’t you just play for the basketball team? You already played like a pro!” that was a solid fact to Nino. Aiba can be a complete baka sometimes, but he can actually play so damn well in basketball.

“I know, I just want to try something new…that’s all.” Aiba mumbled, a blush started to creep onto his cheeks. He quickly stuff the remaining of his rice ball into his mouth, distracting his fellow friends from noticing the blush but unfortunately Jun had already noticed Aiba’s redden face.

“This has nothing to do with that sempai, hasn’t it?” Aiba choked on his rice ball at this sudden question from Jun. He bit his lip trying to look as calm as sea but under Jun’s sharp gaze, all of his effort were gone. Fidgeting under Jun’s gaze, Aiba had a war with himself whether to answer the question or not.

“What sempai?” Nino asked, pretending not to see the distressed Aiba. “Jun?” he continued.

Jun looked at Nino briefly before gesturing towards Aiba. They both stared at Aiba, waiting for the answer but before he could open his mouth the bell made a sudden noise, signaling the recess was over.

This gave Aiba a complete opportunity to dodge the question so he used it without thinking it twice. “Ah~ we better go now! Don’t want to be late for class ne~”. He immediately dash towards the door. Jun let out a sigh before he got up to join Aiba who waiting for them at the door.

Nino who still confused with the sempai-thing also got up and joined Jun. “Ne~ Jun, what’s up with Aiba?”

Jun let out another sigh, “You better ask him yourself…but all I can say that he’s being a complete idiot about this soccer thing… ”

That, Nino had to agree. Aiba loves basketball, so why he so suddenly switch to soccer?

They both join Aiba who smile innocently at them. While descending the stairs, Aiba kept busy talking about the newly open ramen stall not too far from the school and also about the dog he brought home (which was the fifth dog in three months) and how his mother wouldn’t let him keep the fifth dog (because Aiba already kept the four previous dogs).

The floor that leading towards their class now was almost free from students. Aiba still kept talking about his dog while Nino had his mind somewhere only god knows where. Jun however had something else going on in his mind, which concerning his two bestfriends’ stupidity.

Jun glanced at Nino, whose mind obviously somewhere between the earth and the blue sky. About a year ago, he noticed that Nino started to behaved strangely. Nino is still Nino, he still acted like a brat, still thrifty when it comes to money and yeah, he still one professional games maniac! but Jun could see that Nino had changed a bit.

He noticed how Nino would space out during class, staring out the window. And Jun swears that Nino sigh more than necessary when he in his own world. He was troubled about something, Jun was confirmed about it. He even confronted Nino one day, asking whether he’s alright or not…

“I’m fine Jun…just mind your own business…”

That was the answer. Eventhough Jun wasn’t convince, he didn’t push more into that matter. He knew Nino his entire life, both grew up together and they were practically like brothers now. So Jun just let Nino be, figuring that if Nino’s not willing to tell him then he’ll do what he should do…minding his own business.

But, this had gone too long now! It almost been a year, and Nino still not getting any better. In fact, he had gone much worst! Nino still doing the spacing-out thing, but there were some incidents that made Jun believe that Nino seriously needed help! There’s one time when Nino hurt himself during his baseball practice, he supposed to catch the ball but it hit him on his forehead. He was sent to the school’s infirmary immediately and got a big blue lump on his forehead instead.

“You suppose to catch the ball with your hand, not with your head!!”

“Stop whining Jun, why don’t you be a good boy and peel those apple for me!”

“Ne~ ne~ can I touch it?? Pleeeaaaasseeee……….”

“Shut up Aiba, go hit yourself on the wall and get your own bruise!!”

At first, Jun didn’t suspect anything, until Nino got himself another injury for the third time…in a month! Careless…that’s what Nino told him. Bruises on the forehead, sprained ankle, almost got burnt in the science’s lab…. Jun knew that something was definitely wrong with Nino. Still, he didn’t say anything because he’s minding his own business. Jun knew that even if he ask Nino, he wouldn’t give him a definite answer so, for almost a year now Jun played along with Nino’s “I’m-careless-so-that’s-why-I-got-these-injuries” excuse.

And throughout his observation, Jun also noticed that Nino’s eyes would linger at the infirmary’s door everytime they walked past the room. And he also caught Nino gawking at Ohno-sensei, the school’s doctor; whenever that guy in Nino’s range of vision. Nino even fidgeting when Ohno-sensei greet them politely whenever they walked into each other. He would pointedly stared at the white floor under him, hiding his distressed face.

Jun noticed everything!

And now, he saw Nino doing it again as they walked past the infirmary room. Eyes lingered towards the door, full of longing. The only one who didn’t realize this was definitely Aiba who continued chatting aimlessly. But he stopped talking when he heard Nino’s heavy sigh, looking tired. He grabbed Nino’s hand and stopped the younger boy in his track.

“Ne~ Nino, are you sick?? Let’s go back to the infirmary and have you tested ok!”

“No, I-I’m fine….let’s go…” Nino grabbed Aiba’s arm and was about to drag him away when Jun suddenly shouted at them.

“Omai wa fuzakerunjanaizo!!” he swiftly walked to Nino and punched him hard on the face. He then grabbed Nino’s shirt and slammed him on the white wall. A small grunt could be heard from Nino when his back met with the wall behind him. Aiba was completely shocked by the sudden rage from Jun towards Nino. He just stood there, with teary wide eyes, looking at his two bestfriends killing each other.

“What the hell is wrong with you?? Are you fucking crazy??”

Jun didn’t answer, he was ready to throw his second punch towards Nino when suddenly a familiar voice stopped him.

“Matsumoto-san!!”

All three heads whipped around, looking at the owner of the voice. It was Ohno-sensei. And he had the most murderous glare on his feature. Jun quickly let go of Nino and gracefully stomped away, leaving Nino and his bleeding nose behind. Aiba who apparently just woke up from his confused-state, gave Nino a look that clearly said; “I’m sorry Nino.” He then bowed and quickly followed Jun’s retreating back.

Nino was a bit pissed off at Jun’s sudden rage, he obviously didn’t do anything to upset the guy and why did Jun punched him?! Nino had lost count on how many times that they had a fight but they never throw punches to each other, not ever!

Nino wiped away the remaining blood from his nose with his sleeve. Slowly picking himself up, he tried to make his way to his classroom. Suddenly, Nino felt a gentle hand holding his right arm. Nino’s heart was beating senselessly to make up for the lost of blood that drained out from his body when he was now face to face with the owner of the gentle hand. It was Ohno Satoshi-sensei, the one that had been haunting him in his sleep for the past few months.
