Chapter 7 - Sho's Story

The next morning the whole school heard what happened at the Dueling Club. The students were scared and huddled in groups as they walked from class to class. Rumors spread like wildfire that Sho was expelled while others believed he ran into the Dark Forest and was never seen again.

The truth was, confirmed by Ikuta Toma, that Sho was up in his dormortory and refused to face the school. Word got out that he talked with Head of Ravenclaw Professor Yamamoto and Headmaster Johnny, but Toma said he's still in his bed and won't say a word. Jun felt his heart being torn into two. He was deeply worried about Sho, but he was also just as scared as any of the other students.

What Jun saw that night at the Dueling Club was purely terrifying. Sho looked like he enjoyed ripping Yamashita to bits, and just the image alone sent shivers down Jun's spine. But it wasn't as terrible as the feeling...the agonizing heat that scorched deep into his body and soul. Jun could have sworn he would die from the burning.

It was lucky for them that Ohno stopped Sho in time.

Ohno was also being ignored by the students, but he took it well. Everyone would watch Ohno from a great distance and whisper behind their hands, but he would ignore them as well. Those that were at the Dueling Club were puzzled as to how Ohno calmed Sho down. They didn't forget his eyes glowing blue.

The professors didn't even mention the incident that happened. All the students were gossiping about it, and Jun guessed that Professor Miura and Naruse informed the teacher staff and they too were discussing about the situation. However, none of them approached Ohno. As if they knew what he has became and accepted it. Jun suspected that either Naruse or Headmaster Johnny told the staff what happened to Ohno last year...

As for Yamashita...

"He's alive," Ohno informed Jun.

"How is he?" Jun dared to ask, but Ohno couldn't even speak.

"Horikita is with him now," Aiba said.

Together, they headed for the hospital wing and found a large amount of gifts and flowers on one bed. Jun saw Maki sitting next to Yamashita with her head bowed in sorrow. As Jun got closer, he felt his skin curled.

"Oh god..." Jun gasped, covering his gaping mouth.

Yamashita was a mess. It was more than cuts from what Jun thought. The burning had physically effected Yamashita greatly. Black burns were found everywhere like a sticky ooze. He laid unconscious and breathing ever so slowly. It was an amazing stroke of luck that the burns didn't reach his face or hair, otherwise he'd look like a dark mummy.

"Can't Madam Pomfrey heal this?" Jun asked. Maki couldn't talk, so Ohno answered for her.

"From what I heard, these aren't normal burnings or scars," Ohno said. "It's magically seared into his skin, so regular remedies won't fix it."

Jun gasped. "That's horrible."

Jun never liked many of the Slytherins, but even as a house rival...he'd never wanted something like this to happen!

"But he won't be like this for long," Aiba said, hopeful. "I heard the teachers saying there's a special crystal that can cure any burnings like this and sooth the skin and scars."

"So why can't-"

"It's extremely rare, and hard to get," Aiba answered. "The Ice Crystal can only be found in either the Himalayas, Mauna Loa, or the North Pole."

"Surely someone has a stash in a nearby store somewhere," Maki pleaded.

"Rare items like the Ice Crystal isn't that easy to get," Aiba said. "Believe me, if I had my hands on it, I'd experiment on it like crazy. But that's not the case."

"So what's gonna happen to Yamapi?" Maki whispered.

'She calls him Yamapi?' Jun wondered. Aiba also caught the nickname.

"U-uhh, I don't know," Aiba said. "Only the professors know, but...."

At that moment, they heard someone walk in. Jun turned and felt his heart sank. Nino walked into the room with a batch of flowers he picked from the school grounds. He ignored his friends as he placed his flowers next to Yamashita's bed.

"How is he?" Nino asked Maki.

"Same as always," Maki informed. Nino just nodded and walked away.

"Nino, wait!" Ohno called, but Nino disappeared out the door. Ohno dashed after him.

Jun was rooted to his feet. He wasn't sure if this was the time to comfort Nino, especially after Nino's out burst at Sho. His cry shook Jun to the core. Just watching Nino in class and passing by in the corridors was painful enough.

Jun felt someone's hand on his shoulder.

"Come on," Aiba said. "We need to talk with Nino."

Jun bite his lip.

'It's what I'm afraid of.'

Jun and Aiba managed to catch up with Ohno and Nino. Apparently, Ohno chased Nino to the school grounds. Nino started to walk after getting tired from a short run. But Nino continued to walk away from them, as if they would give up and leave him alone.

But Ohno wouldn't do that. He followed Nino all the way until they reached the lake. Finally, Nino turned around.

"Leave me alone!" Nino yelled.

"Come on, Nino," Ohno said, holding his hand out. "We have to talk."

"There's nothing to talk about!" Nino said, walking back and forth. His eyes darting everywhere. "You saw what Sho did. I'll never forget what happened."

"Nino, it was an accid-"

"It was not an accident!" Nino shouted, his eyes grew watery. "You all saw it! Sho snapped and attacked Yamapi! I won't forgive him!"

"Yamapi?" Jun mumbled. 'Why is he so attached to Yamashita?'

"Listen to me, Nino!" Ohno yelled back."What happened to Sho was an uncontrollable emotional strain of UtaMahou. I went through the same thing last year! I didn't meant to unleash my UtaMahou, but the emotional stress was there to put me in an uncontrollable state."

Nino just glared back until he looked away to wipe his eyes. Jun gulped. He remembered that night when Ohno first used his powerful UtaMahou. It was like Ohno couldn't stop himself...

"But that was different!" Nino continued. "You weren't trying to kill us. I saw the look in Sho's eyes. He was enjoying it!"

"He didn't!" Aiba stepped in, suddenly angry. "Sho was scared as much as any of us. He came back to normal and you saw the shock in his face."

"Don't defend him, pretty boy!" Nino fired back. "Sho brutally butchered Yamapi, and all because Sho couldn't handle a little duel."

"Yamashita taunted Sho!" Aiba yelled. "If anything, it was Yamashita's fault for making Sho angry in the first place. You know how Sho's sensitive with his family."

Nino didn't reply right away. He managed to fight his tears back before he finally spoke.

"We all go through shit in our lives," Nino mumbled. "We get angry for things we wish didn't happen. Sometimes we want to run away from it all. Sho is no different."

Ohno nodded.

"But..." Nino's nose flared again, "what gives Sho the right to release his anger on someone else who had nothing to do with it?!"

"Nino," Aiba sighed.

"Perhaps Yamapi did went too far in bullying Sho and his family problems," Nino continued. "And maybe Yamashita should have kept his mouth shut, but he doesn't deserve to be...to be burnt like that!"

"Like I said, Nino. It was uncontrollable-"

"I'm not buying that!" Nino snapped.

The boys were silent for a long time. Nino turned to face the lake and let the wind dry his tears. Aiba looked like he wanted to say more, but he couldn't find the words. Ohno looked lost too because Nino did had a point. Yamashita hit low by bringing up Sho's sister...but Sho didn't have to roar his UtaMahou at full power.

But...

"Why..." Jun whispered, his mind on a single question. "Why are you...so attached to Yamashita?"

"What?" Nino turned around, his eyes dried but looked tired.

"Why are you so defensive for Yamashita?" Jun dared to ask. "I know you and Sho aren't the closest of friends among us, but can't you try to see it from his point of view."

"Why should I?" Nino glared. "He didn't held back then. It was Ohno who had to stop him. Why should I care for him?"

"Why don't you face him yourself?" Jun suggested, not even breaking eye contact. "Talk with Sho at least once and see what he has to say. Ask him why he got so angry."

Nino just glared back, but Jun waited for his reply.

"Ever since..." Nino finally spoke, his eyes softening. "...ever since Ohno was sorted into Gryffindor, I thought I would be alone forever until summer when I can speak to Ohno again."

Nino glanced at Ohno. He rubbed his hands together as if to calm himself. He sat on a rock near the sandy banks of the lake, and Ohno sat next to him. Nino continued his story.

"I wasn't really good at approaching people," Nino confessed. "I may seem like an easy-going person now, but I used to have a hard time making a good first impression. Back then, I really do want to make friends, but I didn't know what to say. Without Ohno there, I felt so lonely."

Ohno bowed his head, as if he was sorry he wasn't sorted as a Slytherin like the rest of his family.

"But then, Yamapi talked to me," Nino smiled softly. "At first, I thought he was annoying. But he's pretty smart unlike the other idiots in our year. He became my first friend I made at Hogwarts."

Jun felt his heart sank. He knew exactly what Nino felt, only Jun's first friend was Ohno. Suddenly, Jun felt guilty for stealing Ohno from Nino.

Then, Ohno wrapped his arm around Nino's small shoulders.

"It's alright," Ohno spoke softly. "You got us now."

Aiba nodded.

"And even if he may not show it, Sho really enjoys your company," Ohno said. "How about it? Let's talk with Sho."

"If he comes out," Nino said.

"I'll see if I can convince him," Aiba spoke.

*      *      *

The boys planned to meet at the Quidditch field at night, since they've been meeting at the lake too many times and fear that Naruse would spot them again. Plus it was far enough from the castle for anyone to hear. Ohno, Jun, and Nino already waited at the Quidditch pitch for Aiba to come with Sho. Aiba got special permission from Ikuta Toma to enter the Ravenclaw's common room. For all Jun knew, Aiba could be pounding on Sho's door now...

"It's a clear sky," Jun said, staring at the starry sky.

No one reply to him.

He glanced around and found Nino at the far end of the field, staring at the three goal post. His back looked hunched and depresssing. Jun suddenly felt an urge to talk with him, but his feet stopped for him.

'It's still awkward between us,' Jun remembered.

"I hope he'll come," Ohno spoke, also watching Nino's depressing back. "Sho-kun."

"If Aiba can't, then I don't know who," Jun sighed.

"Well, if Aiba can't, you could always give a try," Ohno shrugged.

Jun blushed.

"Or maybe not," Ohno quickly added.

Jun turned around and saw two figures walking towards the field. Ohno called to Nino that Aiba and Sho have arrived, but Nino wasn't in a hurry to join them. Neither was Sho.

Jun watched Sho approached them with his head bowed down. It had been only three days, yet it felt like ages since Jun last saw Sho.

"You came," Ohno smiled, trying to lift the mood. Sho didn't made eye contact with anyone.

"Nino's here too," Jun added, pointing at the other end of the field.

Sho slowly lifted his head and saw Nino. Jun could have sworn another duel was going to take place if the tension keeps going. No one didn't even blink as Nino slowly walked towards them until he was less than three feet from Sho.

A cold wind blew, and Jun shivered. Nino and Sho didn't.

"Well," Nino finally spoke, "aren't you going to say something? You must have heard that Yamashita is alive. What do you have to say to that? Are you relieved...or are you disappointed?"

Sho remained quiet. It was hard to read Sho's expression, but Jun caught a trace of suffering in his eyes. However, Nino didn't notice and Jun could see the anger stirring in him yet again.

"Which is it?!" Nino yelled. Jun saw Ohno slipped his hands into his pocket...where his wand is...

Sho took a deep and shaky breath.

"Nino," Sho finally spoke, "I'm going to tell you straight out...the reason I attacked Yamashita like that is simple...I hated him, and I did not held back."

"Sho!" Aiba gasped. Jun also had his mouth gaping open in shock. Ohno's eyes widen and Nino fists shook ever so slightly.

"Why?" Nino asked, obviously trying to stay calm. Sho took another deep breath.

"Because...he brought up my sister," Sho said. "When Ohno calmed me, I was scared. I didn't know what happened to me, so I ran from the Hall. That night, I began thinking a lot and...he deserved it."

"You-" Nino growled, his hands reached into his robes, but Ohno was faster.

"Expelliarmus!" Ohno yelled.

Nino's wand soared into the air and Ohno caught it swiftly. Nino's eyes were wide as he realized what happened.

"Why are you doing this?" Nino mumbled darkly and glared hard at Ohno, but he didn't flinch.

"You two will talk this through until the end," Ohno said, glanced between Nino and Sho. "There will be no duel with wands tonight."

Nino clicked his tongue in annoyance. Aiba sighed with relief that a small amount of tension was lifted. Jun was glad Ohno thought this through.

"Sho," Jun spoke after they've calmed down, "you can't really mean that, do you?"

Sho stared at Jun. "I meant it." Sho said. "It wasn't the first time he brought it up and that's why I got angry again."

"He talked about Mai-chan before?" Aiba asked. Sho nodded and began his story.

"It all happened that day when I asked Maki to the Dueling Club. Of course she said yes and I was really happy. We started to talk about random things like homework, our parents jobs, and sports. She even invited me over the summer to see her own Quidditch field since she loves to play.

"That's when Yamashita came," Sho frowned.

~~(flashback)~~

"There you are, baby. Sorry to keep you waiting," Yamashita smirked, wrapping his arm around her shoulder as if she belong to him. Maki looked up in surprise and Sho knew that they weren't completely together.

"Your boyfriend?" Sho asked anyways. Maki shook her head but Yamashita spoke for her.

"No need to ask her out to the Dueling Club because she's coming with me," Yamashita said, coolly. "I suggest you pick up chicks somewhere else."

Sho frowned.

"Yeah, I know all about your little bet with Nino," Yamashita smiled, "and trust me, you are no match."

"It's none of your business, Yamashita," Sho sneered. "And what makes you think Horikita wants to go out with you anyways. Right, Maki-chan?"

"She's out of your league, Sakurai," Yamashita said. "You can't handle women properly."

"You're such a stuck-up, you know that?" Sho said, crossing his arms.

"I know more enough than you," Yamashita said. "For starters, it helps to treat your sister properly too."

Sho felt his body freeze for a split second.

"Even I won't do such a thing to my sister," Yamashita chuckled. "You must be the worst brother ever."
~~~~~~~
"And that's when I hit him," Sho said.
"Sho," Aiba sighed, placing his hand on Sho's shoulder. "You didn't had to lash out on Yamashita. You know what happened to your sister wasn't your fault."
"I know, but..." Sho said, staring at the ground. "It's just...I wish I could have done something to prevent it from happening. I didn't meant for Mai to..."
"I've heard enough," Nino cut in. "I understand your closeness with your sister. I have a sister too, so I can only imagine what it must be like...someone close to you who is losing their minds."
"It's not just that!" Sho yelled, squatting down with his hands grabbing his hair. "Yamashita was right! I've always caused pressure on my family. I hear it all the time. After I graduate, I'm expected to hold up the Sakurai name...have a high official job...but all I could think about was UtaMahou."
Ohno knelt down next to Sho and placed his hand on Sho's back.
"All I could think about was singing...rapping...DansuMahou," Sho continued to stare at the ground. "I disappointed everyone! And then they placed their expectations on my sister. Saying things how she'll raise a good name for the Sakurai family. She won't be like her brother. But she's only seven!"
'I'd never knew,' Jun thought. 'Sho has an enormous amount of pressure on him.'
Sho quickly stood up and stared at Nino. His eyes looked more sorrowful than ever.
"I was angry at Yamashita...because he was right!" Sho yelled. "I hated him for pointing my weaknesses. I just felt so disappointed in myself for agreeing with him that...I attacked."
Nino still had a hateful look in his eyes, but it was less intense than it was before.
"Nino," Sho said, his voice really small. "...I'm sorry."
Sho bowed low.
Everyone waited for Nino's reply. Surely this was what Nino wanted from Sho, but even Nino looked unsure. Jun suspected that even Nino was feeling more sorry for Sho than Yamashita.
'Sho's been through a lot,' Jun thought. 'If only...there was something I could do for him...'
"Whatever..." Nino grumbled, and he walked away back toward the castle.
"Nino!" Ohno yelled, and ran after him.
Sho still had his head bowed until Aiba forced him up straight.
"You did good, Sho-chan," Aiba reassured him. "Come on. Let's go back."
"You go..." Sho mumbled. "I need a minute alone."
Aiba and Jun exchange glances and left Sho alone on the quiet Quidditch field. As Jun walked back to the castle, he glanced over his shoulder and watched Sho stare at his hands in defeat.
'We can't leave him alone!' Jun's mind racing. 'He needs someone.'
Jun ran back to the Quidditch field and called out to him. Sho turned around to see who was approaching him and drooped his shoulders when he saw Jun.
"Please. Just give me a moment," Sho pleaded.
"It's not healthy to constantly think of depressing thoughts," Jun said, feeling his heart fluttering again.
"What is it?" Sho asked. Jun gulped.
'I'm scared.'
"I can't even imagine what you're going through," Jun started.
'I must be crazy for doing this! But if it'll help get his mind off of his family issues...'
"And I know that you're in no mood but...I mean, I-I was thinking. It's just-"
"Spit it out, already," Sho said, looking irritated. "What is it?"
'I probably going to end up like Yamashita.'
"I can make you happy!" Jun blurted out. "I love you!"
Sho's eyes slowly widen as he took in the sudden news.
