Chapter 11- The Fire Talisman (Part 1)

It was the first time Jun journeyed through Apparation, and he didn't like it one bit. Jun felt like he squeezed through a tight rubber tube, and he could hardly breathe. Worst of all, the sensation lasted forever and Jun though his head would pop. Finally, Jun felt the ground underneath his feet.

"Sakurai-san!" A woman gasped, followed by a few wizards in lime green robes. Jun laid on the floor and tried to suppress his pounding headache. Ohno, Aiba, and Nino were in a similar position. He started coughing as his body realized how clean the air was compare to the air when they were on the volcano. The others coughed and wheezed as well.

"Please, my son..." Sakurai pleaded, holding his unconscious son.

"This looks bad. Take him to the Fourth Floor!"

Jun caught a glimpse of Sho before they carried him away.

"Sho," Jun moaned, still feeling queasy from the long Apparation, but his eyes widen when he saw a horrifying sight.

'Sho...his hands...!'

"What about these boys?" A wizard asked, kneeling down before them.

"A few of them have some burns and now suffering from nausea," Naruse informed the wizard, calmly. "I assume it's their first time Side-Along Apparation and a long one too."

"I see," The wizard nodded, turning Aiba's face side to side. "They should be fine here on the Ground Floor. Reiko!"

"Yes, sir!" A woman arrived and waved her wand.

The four boys floated off the ground and drifted through the halls until they arrived in a ward with four empty beds. She placed them gently on the beds and more witches and wizards with lime green robes attended to them. Jun didn't protest and let these wizard-doctors do their job. Jun didn't even knew his arm had a serious burn before a wizard pour an ointment, and the red flesh faded away.

Then, Jun heard gasps from the doctors. He turned his head and saw Ohno levitating water from a pitcher next to his bed. The water floated without a wand before the wizards and gracefully covered Ohno's red feet and legs. The water glowed a bright unnaturally blue tone and his flesh returned to its normal color. The Healers were astonished.

"I'm fine," Ohno nodded to them.

"But how? You were showing signs of hemorrhaging when you arrived," a Healer said.

"It's hard to explain," Ohno said, looking serious. "What about Sho? What are the Healers doing to him?"

"I have no report about Sakurai Sho," the Healer informed him. "But Healer Tsukumo Ryusuke is treating him now."

"Where?" Ohno demanded, getting off his bed looking perfectly healthy.

"They took him to the Fourth Floor- Spell Damage," the Healer said. "Besides from the major burns, they're not sure if he is suffering from a curse of some kind. But it's the best guess they can get and- Hey!"

Ohno dashed out of the room and disappeared. Jun tried to get off the bed too, but the Healers pushed him back.

"No, you need to rest," they told him. Jun looked around and saw Aiba and Nino also struggling with their handlers.

"But it's Sho!" Aiba coughed. "He needs us!"

"This won't do! Reiko!"

"Right," she raised her wand before the boys. "Immobu- what the?!"

Water circled around her wand and turned into ice, encasing her hand with her wand. Another jet of water shot to her feet and turned into ice as well. Ohno reappeared with water floating around him like a giant umbrella, and he shot individual amounts of water at the Healers to freeze them in place.

"I'm sorry. It's only temporarily," Ohno bowed to the Healers who were unable to cast spells or move.

"What do you think you're doing?! These boys need treatment!" A Healer said sternly. "They inhaled too much smoke and have severe burns."

"I'll take care of that now," Ohno said, whirling his hands around.

Jun felt a coolness wash over him as the water wrapped around his burns. He started to breath in a steady pace as the magic of Ohno's powers cured them all.

"Amazing!" A Healer gasped. "How is this accomplished? Without a wand or a potion?"

"Like I said, it's hard to explain," Ohno smirked.

"I didn't know you can heal," Nino said, standing up as well as the others.

"I didn't know either," Ohno shurgged, "but that can wait. We've got to find Sho."

"Right," Aiba nodded, and the boys dashed out of the room.

No one seemed to stop them since they were healthy. They ran down the halls and entered what looked like an elevator. A voice asked what floor and all four of them shouted.

"Fourth Floor!"

And the elevator shot up.

"Did you see..." Jun mumbled, unable to finish his sentence.

"His hands?" Nino asked. Jun gulped.

Before the Healers took Sho away, Sho's hands were charred black. Jun didn't noticed this before until they arrived at Nippon Majo Hospital.

"It's Sho's normal skin," Ohno told them. "He has to wake up and heal himself if he wants to keep his hands."

"You mean, it was Sho's normal body touching the lava!" Aiba gasped, covering his mouth.

"Can't you heal him, Ohno?" Jun asked, getting scared.

"I don't think I can cure something like that," Ohno frowned. "Something is telling me there's a limit to what I can do. I have this gut feeling that this is something only Sho can fix. But I'll try."

"Let me get this straight, Sho was still 'Sho' when he touched the lava?" Nino asked. "You mean...he wasn't...a Vocal Wizard at the time?"

"No. He was still Sho when he reached inside that lava," Ohno said, sounding very cool that made Jun shivered. "But he grabbed something in that lava just in time..."

'A talisman?' Jun thought.

"How are we gonna wake him up?" Jun asked, and the elevator door opened.

"Which way is Sho's room?" Aiba asked.

"H-how should I know?!" Ohno yelled, not sounding so cool like before.

"Let's try this way!" Nino pointed at a bunch of people down the hall.

The boys ran towards the crowd and pushed them aside to pass through. As they tried to make their way through the crowd, Jun heard the spectators gossiping.

"It's Sakurai Shun."

"Wasn't he suppose to be in America?"

"Why is Professor Johnny here?"

"Is that his son?"

"It is! It's Sakurai Sho."

"Look at his hands! Their black!"

"Is it like that poor boy Yamashita?"

"There!" Ohno pointed.

A small window showed inside Sakurai's father sitting in the room, his head bowed with his arms resting on his knees. Naruse Ryo and Professor Johnny were there too, standing next to Sakurai-san. A batch of Healers surrounded a bed which Jun guessed was Sho.

"Whoa, what do you think you boys are doing?" A Healer blocked them at the door. "There's a serious recovering session going on insi-"

But Ohno punched the Healer hard in the stomach. The Healer was a skinny man and immediately knelt down in pain. Ohno opened the door and everyone in the room turned heads towards them.

"Boys, what are you doing here?!" Sakurai-san demanded, but Ohno completely ignored him.

"Move aside!" Ohno ordered the Healers.

"Get out," a Healer with long brown hair barked. "This boy is in serious condition."

"I will heal him," Ohno said, his eyes showing no fear. "Now move aside."

"Now you listen here-"

"Let him through, Tsukumo," Professor Johnny stepped in.

"What?!" Sakurai-san glared.

"Professor?" Naruse frown.

"Trust me," Professor Johnny nodded. "Let him through."

The Healers looked unsure, but they gave in and allowed Ohno and the boys to see Sho. Professor Johnny clearly has a powerful influence. Jun felt sweat roll down his face when he saw Sho's hands, dark and cracked, just like Yamashita. Sho was so pale, he might as well looked dead.

"Ohno?" Nino stared. "What are you gonna do?"

Ohno didn't reply but placed one hand on his chest and another on Sho's black palm. He closed his eyes in concentration. Jun knew where those places were...the talismans inside them.

As if Jun guessed right, Ohno's chest began to glow blue while Sho's palm glowed red. Everyone gasped at the lights. Then, Jun saw Sho's eyes slowly opening.

"Sho!" Jun cried. Aiba and Nino drew closer.

"Ohno?" Sho moaned with a dry throat. Ohno opened his eyes slowly and angelic-like.

"Welcome back...brother," Ohno whispered, but Jun heard it. Sho gave a tiny nod.

"I'm back...brother."

"Sho," Aiba choked, "your hands..."

Sho slowly raised his arms and stared at his burned hands as if he wasn't surprised. Sho looked like he knew exactly what to do. He clasped his palms together and a red glow engulfed his hands. Once the light faded away, Sho's hands were good as new. Everyone was speechless.

"Impossible!" A Healer gasped. The Healer Tsukumo had his mouth hung open, and he ran his fingers through his hair.

"Professor," Naruse glared, "could this be...?"

Professor Johnny only nodded.

"Sho!" Sakurai-san cried and hugged his son. "Thank goodness. You're alright."

"Dad," Sho mumbled, his eyes getting watery.

Jun couldn't help but smile. But then, Sho's eyes widen, and he kicked the blankets off of him.

"That's right!" Sho exclaimed. "Where is Mai?"

"What?" Sho's father looked taken aback.

"Mai! Where is she now?" Sho begged.

"Sakurai Mai is in a private ward down the hall," Tsukumo told him, and Sho immediately jumped off the bed.

"Sho, wait!" His father called, but he was already gone.

Jun and the others followed as Sho ran as fast as he could down the hall and found the private wards district of the floor. He passed doors as he tried to find the room with his sister's name plate. Finally, he found the right one and swung the doors opened. Jun followed in and gasped.

All the rushing and anxiousness they experienced earlier drained away. There was a silent hush that everyone must obey as they entered the grand room. Jun watched Sho slowly walked into the room.

The room was completely white, as if they were in limbo. There were no windows or furnitures expect for the white bed that sat in the center of the room. A glass wall encased around the bed like some kind of quarantine. Mai laid in the bed with her hands and feet strapped down. The Healers dressed her in a white dress, but her dark hair made her looked like a ghost.

She looked like she was sleeping.

"Mai," Sho sighed, pressing his palm against the glass. "It's alright. I'm here now."

"Sho," Jun spoke, "what are you gonna do?"

"You guys wait out here," Sho said, not looking back. "I'll go inside alone."

"Sho! At least take a professional Healer to block her explosions," his father suggested.

"No, I can handle it," Sho said. "After all...I started this."

"Don't be ridiculous!" His father yelled, but Professor Johnny blocked him with his arm.

Jun felt his heart skip a beat. They watched Sho open the glass door and approach his sister. At first, Sho looked scared as well, and this made Jun nervous. Even the others outside the glass were backing away.

"Is it that serious when someone suffers Mahou Nensho?" Jun asked openly.

"I've only heard that they're like a blast of magic attacking you all at once," Aiba said. "I don't know what will happen, but..."

"Mai is a special case," Tsukumo told them. "Normal Mahou Nensho patients only suffer minor attacks and harm only physical damage to those close at range. But Mai is different. Her magic is expelled at irregular times and her attacks not only affects her mentally, but to those close by...it can harm them internally."

"Like, internal organs?" Aiba asked.

"No...the soul," Ryusuke said, frowning. "As if she's draining magic from them."

This didn't calm Jun at all.

Sho clasped his palms together like he did before and stood there for a long time. Jun wasn't sure if Sho knew what he was doing, but then a bright light emerge from Sho's hands once again.

"I don't believe it!" Nino gasped. "It's that star!"

Jun's mouth hung open. The star that Sho found in the lava shined on his palm like a stigma and glowed a heavenly bright red.

"Professor! Is that...?" Naruse whispered. Jun saw Professor Johnny nod again.

Then, Mai opened her eyes. She stared up at Sho and gasped.

"Sho-kun...no...go away...I don't want you to..." she mumbled, but then Jun saw her shaking.

"Uh no..." Nino whispered.

She arched her back suddenly and screamed. The magical ropes that tied her down were slowly breaking apart. She might as well be a banshee, but thanks to the magical glass walls, the explosion didn't affect them. However, Jun saw cracks creeping around the edges of the glass, and Jun slowly felt his heart getting heavy. It looked like a tornado in there, and Sho was in the middle of it all. Jun and the others could only watch as Sho had his back against the walls, taking in the powerful yet invisible forces of magic.

"Sho!" Jun cried, watching Sho's face in anguish.

"Something's not right," Tsukumo said, squinting his eyes. "He's getting hit...but he's not getting injured!"

He was right. Sho still had the red star glowing on his palm, and there was no sign of injuries on him as Mai continued to scream. Sho slowly walked forward as he fought against a whirlwind; he took one step at a time with his palm in front of him like a shield. Finally, he reached her bed and with a sudden force, he slammed his palm on her forehead and force her down.

Everyone gasped as Sho struggled to keep his hand on her forehead while his sister tried fighting him off. It was like watching a horrifying exorcist, but the red light only grew. Soon, the glass walls reflected red light, and they couldn't see a thing. Jun shielded his eyes from the blinding light.

Then, the light faded away. And before their very eyes, they saw a brother embraced his little sister. Her tiny head rested on his shoulder, and her tiny arms wrapped tightly around her precious brother. Jun saw a tear roll down her cheek and soaked into his shirt.

"Sho...Mai..." Sakurai-san whimpered and dashed forward. He opened the door and hugged them as well.

Jun sighed heavily and felt Ohno's hand on his shoulder. The four boys exchanged glances and smiles. Gradually, the room was filled with the sound of applause. The Healers were impressed.

"How is this possible?" Someone asked.

"The star on his palm...it's not normal."

"I believe I can help you there," Professor Johnny smiled at the Healers.

"Can you really explain all this?" Tsukumo asked, staring at him closely.

"Of course," Professor Johnny nodded. "Naruse, will you come with me."

Naruse nodded and stared down at the boys before he left. The look on his face said it all.

'I'll deal with you later.'
