Chapter 10 - The Return (Part One)

"Lumos," Nino whispered and his wand lit up. Jun also raised his wand light.

There were cobwebs everywhere, and tiny little bugs scurried away from the sudden light. The stones blocks were smooth since they haven't been stepped on in centuries. They walked down the spiral staircase with their wands raised high.

"Geez, what's that smell?" Nino scrunched his nose.

"I don't think anyone cleaned this place in years," Jun answered.

There was a faint stench in the air like old wet towels. Their footsteps echoed with each step as they descended down. There seemed to be no end to the spiral stairs.

"We must be under the moat by now," Nino mumbled, his voice echoed. "Do you feel cold?"

"A little," Jun admitted, seeing his own breath.

"We must be really far down," Nino said. Then, he pointed his wand to the walls. "What's that?"

Jun leaned in closer and noticed there were thousands of detailed pictures carved into the stone. They were so faint, but they filled the entire wall and continued up and down as far as they could see.

"Hieroglyphs? I didn't noticed them until now," Nino said. "Do you think they're telling a story about the Vocal Wizards?"

"I don't know. I can't read these inscriptions," Jun said, touching the stone pictures. "Let's keep going."

It was a good thing they were descending down the stairs. Jun would hate to think when they have to climb back up. Finally, they reached the bottom stair. A long hallway waited for them. Tall pillars supported the roof, and the hieroglyphs continued to spread along the walls.

"Look at that," Nino pointed his wand. "That must be the Vocal Wizards."

At the center of the wall, there were four tall men standing next to each other. They each had their symbol over their heads: Water, Fire, Wind, and Earth.

"Why is there only four?" Nino frowned, looking up at the carvings.

"We should get going."

"Hold on a second," Nino said. "These pictures are definitely saying something."

Jun watched Nino raise his wand as high as he could and walked along the wall. With his wand light, Jun saw four men with a knife in each hand and blood trailing from their palms. The blood spilled onto a circle, which Jun assumed was the Four-Point Pentagram. Nino continued to walk onwards and saw a fifth man rising from the offered blood.

"I...I don't get it," Nino mumbled, looking up at the fifth member of the group. "Did they...create a living being?"

Jun remained quiet, watching Nino's every move. Nino looked back and forth at the hieroglyphs and slowly took in its meaning.

"Jun, look at this!" Nino gasped. "This must be what the Vocal Wizards meant about sacrifice. But why?"

"So they can create their fifth member," Jun answered. Nino glanced over his shoulder looking confused. "In the ancient times, the world only believed in the four elements. Water, Fire, Wind, and Earth. Metal wasn't considered its own natural element until the Vocal Wizards themselves created their fifth member."

"How..."

"They had to sacrifice their power in order to do so," Jun said bluntly. "Nothing can be create out of nothing. With their combined powers, they manage to bring the fifth Vocal Wizard to life...Metal."

"When..."

"But with their powers weakened, the Vocal Wizards were defeated by the unknown stranger. That is why there is no Metal Talisman," Jun said, his eyes boring into Nino's. "Never was, never will be. The only way to revive the fifth member is for the original four Vocal Wizards to create him again."

"Jun!" Nino shouted. "How do you know all this?"

"Research," Jun answered, quickly. He turned around and continued to walk down the hallway.

Nino didn't ask any questions and followed Jun in silence. At the end of the hallway, Jun could see two grand doors waiting for them. The skull ring on his finger was so numb, but the only thing that kept Jun going was his beating heart.

Finally, they stood before the seven-foot tall doors.

"Jun, wait," Nino grasped Jun's wrist. "I have a bad feeling about this."

"We've come this far," Jun said. "And you said so yourself, there's no turning back."

Nino bit his lip and released his hold on Jun. Together, they pulled on the large door handles. Somewhere in the dark, there was a light that shined at them until Jun adjusted his vision.

A massive coliseum, or a grand theater, laid out before them. They were on the top level looking down at the numerous stairs, balconies, passageways, and the center field at the bottom level. They must be at least twenty levels. Across from them on the middle levels was a large statue of four men standing with their eyes looking just above Nino and Jun's heads.

There were torches burning white flames everywhere. Small waterfalls poured out from the roof tops and collected together at the bottom level, forming a ring around a square platform. Somewhere in those pools the water drained out even deeper underground.

The square platform at the center of the coliseum drew in Jun's attention quickly. At each corner, a circular platform raised above it, each had a marking that was similar to the elemental talismans of the Vocal Wizard: a tear drop for water, a star for fire, a spiral for wind, and a diamond with an intricate pattern for earth. At the center of the square platform, a fifth symbol was marked. It looked like a rounded ninja star.

"Oh my gosh," Nino gasped. "This place is huge..."

They both pocketed their wands since the torchlights were enough for them to see.

"All the elements are here," Jun mumbled to himself. "Water, Fire, Wind, and Earth. It's perfect...but where is the Earth Talisman?"

"What is that over there?" Nino pointed at the four statues.

At the foot of the statues, a staff was shrined at the very center. Jun squinted his eyes and realized it was a spear. A yellow diamond spiked out at the end of the staff like a deadly weapon.

"That must be it," Nino said and started descending down the stairs.

There was a single long staircase going straight down to the bottom level. With each level, there were different doorways and passages that continued to circle around the massive coliseum. Jun imagined it was a maze inside.

Nino jumped down from the last step and ran across the bridge. The water was a miniature to the moat just outside Angkor Wat. Jun calmly jogged after Nino and watched him reach the other side of the platform. They hurried down another bridge and up another set of stairs leading to the pedestal that held the mighty spear.

"I don't believe it," Nino stared up at the yellow diamond. "It's so big."

Nino reached his hand out.

"Be careful," Jun whispered.

Nino gently tapped the staff to be safe. Nothing happened, and he grasped his hands around it. He tugged and pulled until the spear finally was released. The tip of the spear shined in the white torchlights.

"This is...so weird," Nino said. "It's...tingling in my hands."

"You two came sooner than we have expected."

Jun and Nino craned their necks up and saw their friend, Aiba Masaki, staring down at them. He sat on the shoulders of the giant statues with his back leaning against the head.

"I took the liberty of arriving first to see you boys," The Wind Vocal Wizards said, his voice so chilling and cool. "You have done a fine job finding this place."

"Let's go," Nino tugged Jun's arm, and they ran towards the exit.

Suddenly, wind picked up around their feet causing them to trip. Nino fell hard, and the spear slipped out of his hand. The Wind Vocal Wizard appeared before them and picked up the spear.

"Little Slytherin boy pulled the great Diamond Spear of Earth," he mocked. "Well done indeed. You are worthy of sacrifice."

Nino pulled out his wand, but he was immediately blown off his feet and thrown towards the middle level. Jun watched Nino crashed through a crumbled wall and disappeared in the sandstone dust.

Jun reached for his pocket, but a sharp edge rested dangerously on his neck. He glared up at the Wind Vocal Wizard.

"It is best you do not resist," he said. "The others will be here soon. Why don't you take your position at the center stage so we may begin the ceremony."

Jun heard the grand doors open. The Water and Fire Vocal Wizards have arrived. The Water Vocal Wizard raised his arm dramatically, and the waterfalls floated in the air. An ice bridge connected from the top of the coliseum to the bottom level, and he gracefully rode on the ice slide as if he was a snowboarder. The Fire Vocal Wizard jumped high in the air and landed next to him. His fire thruster soften his landing. The ice slide shattered to a million pieces and disappeared into the pools below.

The Water Vocal Wizard stared down at Jun. He waved his hand at the Wind Vocal Wizard to remove the spear threatening Jun. He slowly stood up, trying to compose himself and not show any fear. The three of them stared down at him. Ohno, the Water Vocal Wizard, kept a straight face. Sho, the Fire Vocal Wizard, had a fierce look in his eyes. Aiba, the Wind Vocal Wizard, had a playful smirk on his lips.

"Do you wish to see your friends again?" The Water asked him, his voice incredible deep and foreign.

Jun gulped. "Yes."

"Are you willing to do anything to bring them back?" The Fire asked, roughly.

"Yes."

"Even at the cost of something dear to you?" The Wind smiled at him.

"Yes."

The Vocal Wizards exchanged glances.

"An important ritual must take place," The Water continued. "We will shed our blood and parts of our soul on this stage. However..."

The Wind Vocal Wizard tossed the spear to Jun, and he caught it with one hand.

"Earth must have a body to use," The Water whispered, sending chills down Jun's spine. "We can not help you as we must stay on this stage and offer our souls. But you must find the boy up there...and bring his blood to us."

Somehow, Jun felt he knew this was coming. He was shaking, not sure if he could do such a task. What's really going to happen to them if he did bring Nino's blood. And why him?

"It does not matter..." The Fire said with a cold smile, "...if you bring him to us alive."

"What?"

"Do you hate him?" The Wind challenged him. "Little Ninomiya? The boy who toyed with your feelings and use you in his jokes?"

"Or for betraying you with the one you love?" The Water said.

Jun tightened his grip on the spear.

"Jun!"

Suddenly, a blast of red light struck the ground between him and the Vocal Wizards. Nino had his wand back and ran along the terrace of the coliseum. Jun took this opportunity to run for the staircase.

"Stop them!"

Jun saw the white torchlights burn red, and he glanced behind him. The Fire Vocal Wizard was gaining on him, but then a flash of white light struck Sho in the chest and fell to the ground. Jun looked up and saw Headmaster Johnny and the whole Elites with him.

"Do not let the Vocal Wizards harm the boys!" Johnny ordered, and a battle took place.

Jun continued to run along the stairs, but the Wind Vocal Wizard blocked him off.

"You can not out run me!" He roared, but he was blast off to the side. Jun spotted Tsukumo Ryusuke with his wand raised. Outraged, the Wind Vocal Wizard charged towards Tsukumo.

"How dare you harm the almighty Vocal Wizards!" A new voice echoed the coliseum.

This time, a new party joined. SIN, lead by Tamaki Hiroshi.

Jun took cover and ran down the maze of passageways. He could hear explosions behind him, and UtaMahou echoing everywhere. He held onto the spear and tried to find a way up without running into a duel.

He turned around a corner, but the wall shattered to pieces as a wizard crashed through. Jun didn't recognized the wizard, but the attacker followed and stared at Jun.

Fujiwara Tatsuya.

"You," he sneered.

Jun pulled out his wand. "Diffindo!"

"Impervious!" Fujiwara countered.

The two spells collided in midair causing a mini explosion. Jun immediately turned back and ran away. He could hear Fujiwara calling out curse after curse, and the sandstone walls crumbled behind him. Jun managed to find a hiding spot and peeked around with his wand raised.

"Sectumsempra!"

Fujiwara was hit as if a sword slashed him from his shoulder and across his chest. Blood spilled out, and yet Fujiwara was still standing. He growled.

"You little pest!" Fujiwara roared. "Confringo!"

The wall Jun hid behind suddenly blasted behind him, and he landed hard on the lower levels of the coliseum. He shook his head and managed to get back up again. He still had the spear, but he lost his wand. He could hear Fujiwara laughing like a madman until Jun bumped into someone.

"Jun!" Nino gasped.

"N-nino?"

"Quick, over here!"

Nino pulled Jun's arm and continued to run along the complex passageways of the coliseum. They climbed up a few stairs, and Nino yanked on Jun's shirt to hide behind another wall. They waited quietly for Fujiwara to come around. Jun could still hear the battle happening at the other end of the coliseum, but his focus was getting away from his pursuer.

Nino gripped his wand tightly until they heard Fujiwara's husky breathing just on the other side of the wall.

"Expulso!" Nino shouted.

The wall blew off, and Fujiwara shouted in the air. The man fell a good three levels down and splashed in the pools below. Jun and Nino leaned over the edge to see if he was still alive, but they couldn't see him.

"Did I kill him?" Nino asked, frightened.

Before Jun could answer, he felt the floor underneath them starting to giveaway. He jumped out of the way, but Nino was about to fall. Jun reached out just in time and grabbed Nino's wrist. He saw Nino's wand fall and disappear into the water as well. Nino glanced up, his eyes merciful and scared.

"Jun! Pull me up!"

Jun stared down at him. His mind racing.

'Do you hate him?'

'The boy who toyed with your feelings...use you in his jokes?'

'...betraying you with the one you love?'

'Do you hate him?'

'It does not matter...if you bring him to us alive?'

"What are doing, Jun?!" Nino yelled. "Pull me up!"

Jun continued to dangle Nino for dear life; his cold eyes glared down at him.

"If I drop you, surely she wouldn't miss you," Jun said calmly through the battle noises.

"What?" Nino cried.

"I saw you two!" Jun shouted. "You were with Inoue Mao. My Mao-chan!"

"W-what are you talking about?!" Nino shouted. "I never did anything!"

"Why should I rescue you?" Jun sneered. "You have been nothing but a nuisance in my life!"

Nino's eyes grew round with fear and disbelief.

"And what a joke it is," Jun continued, "to use me to forget your love for Ohno?! I will not be fooled around like that!"

"I'm sorry!" Nino pleaded. "I'm sorry, okay! Please don't let go!"

Jun huffed through his nose like an angry bull. He leaned in close so Nino could hear him good.

"I'll finish the job your father couldn't."

Jun released his grip and watched Nino fall...fall...fall... and land ironically on the circular platform for Earth.
