Chapter 14 - The Start of Something Great
Ohno was still breathing as if he was sleeping, but his face was pale and he shivered ever so slightly. Sho magically conjured a spell to lift the water off and dried their clothes so they wouldn't feel so cold. However, Ohno was still sleeping.
"Maybe we should take him to the hospital wing," Nino suggested.
"Allow me," a voice spoke behind them
Jun nearly jumped out of his skin as he wheeled around to look behind him. It was just their luck; Professor Naruse Ryo towered over them with an angry face that Jun had never seen before. Out of instincts, the boys parted away to let Naruse examine his nephew laying down on the ground.
Naruse knelt down and hovered his hand over Ohno's head. Just like he did when Ohno first collapse from UtaMahou, Naruse started muttering fast incantations to bring color to Ohno's face. Naruse glared back at the boys.
"Why are you out here?" Naruse questioned. "What were you doing?"
They didn't say anything at first but stared at each other. Naurse slowly stood up and stared down at Nino, his favorite student...until now.
"Ninomiya?" Naruse said. "Why are you out this late?"
"We..." Nino mumbled, glancing at the others. "We were..."
"Helping Ohno," Jun confessed.
"On what?" Naruse asked.
"The past few months...Ohno said he's been hearing a voice coming from the lake, and he wanted to check it out," Jun explained.
"And he collapsed when we got here," Aiba tried to cover them. Naruse stared long and hard.
"Don't lie to me," Naruse said, coolly. Aiba gulped, and Jun immediately knew that there was no way of hiding from Naruse. "You will all come with me to the Headmaster's office."
Naruse waved his wand and made Ohno float on an invisible stretcher, and he carried Ohno toward the castle. Sho, Aiba, Nino, and Jun followed Naruse in defeat. Neither of them could say a word or glance at each other.
They arrived at the hospital wing, and Madam Pomfrey was already there at the door as if she knew they were coming. She led them to an empty bed for Ohno to lie down. Naruse just bowed his head to Madam Pomfrey, but Jun could have swore he heard Naruse whisper to her.
"Please look after him."
Naruse left the room with the boys right behind him, since there was no way in escaping. The castle was dark and quiet. It was almost taunting to hear their own footsteps echoing softly on the walls. They finally arrived at the gargoyle that led to Professor Johnny's office.
"Four Leaves," Naruse gave the password.
The gargoyle jumped aside, and they climb up the revolving staircase. Just as Jun suspected, Professor Johnny wasn't sleeping; he sat in his chair as if he knew they would arrive as well.
"Professor Naruse?" Professor Johnny acted. "What brings you here so late with these students?"
"They were found at the lake. Ohno Satoshi is unconscious," Naruse briefed.
There was a long silence as if Johnny and Naruse were having a secret conversation which no else could hear but them. Jun studied Professor Johnny's face carefully. He looked calm, but there was a trace of weariness in his eyes. Naruse had his emotionless expression on his face as usual, but Jun could feel an intense aura around him. Even Sho, Aiba, and Nino looked scared.
"I'll take care of these boys, Professor Naruse," Professor Johnny spoke, politely. "Go see to Satoshi."
Naruse bowed his head, not breaking eye connect with Professor Johnny, and left the room without a word. The remaining four boys swallowed hard and waited for their punishment.
"Tell me what happened," Professor Johnny ordered softly. "Sho?"
"Well...sir, Ohno's been hearing a voice down in the lake. He kept saying it was calling him," Sho said.
"When did this started?" Professor Johnny asked.
"Around...January," Sho said. "Ever since we started our Charms project to find Spirit Magic."
Professor Johnny nodded, but Jun could see a spark of interest in his eyes.
"Is that so?" Professor Johnny said. "Continue...Masaki?"
"W-well," Aiba said, also taken back by being called by his first name, "we managed to get gillyweeds from Na...Professor Naruse's office. And we just...dived down into the lake."
"Ohno knew where the voice was coming from?"
"At the time, when we were searching for Water Spirits, he used UtaMahou to trace them. Only he could hear the voice," Sho explained.
"He used UtaMahou?" Professor Johnny asked, clasping his hands together. "What did he sing?"
The boys looked at each other.
"It's hard to explain since he covered our ears with 'Nancho' but it was..." Sho frowned, trying to think of words to describe the feeling.
"Life," Aiba said.
"Healing," Nino said.
"Mysterious," Jun finished.
"I see," Professor Johnny mumbled. "How did you managed underwater...Kazunari?"
"We were persuaded by mermen at first. But we were able to shake them off. And then we came too this huge ship. That's where Ohno heard the voice," Nino said. "We swam down the floors on the ship until we finally found this...thing. I don't know what it was."
"Can you describe it?"
"It was glowing a blue light. And it was...singing. The same song Ohno did. It was shaped like a giant teardrop, and Ohno touched it," Nino shivered slightly. "Then, the Giant Squid chased us."
"The Giant Squid?"
"It lived there at the bottom of the ship," Jun explained.
"How did you escape...Jun?"
"I thought I was going to be eaten, but then...Ohno started glowing. And he became this blue being as if he was an angel."
"His hair and eye color changed," Nino nodded.
"His voice sounded different too," Aiba added.
"And the teardrop thing was on his chest...as if they were fused together," Sho said.
"I see," Professor Johnny sighed, tapping his fingers together. "It's been a rough first year for Satoshi."
"Please Professor," Aiba spoke, "what's gonna happen to him? He's been acting strange ever since this Charms project. We're worried about him."
Professor Johnny slowly stood up and walked around his desk. He walked towards his collection of music sheets on the tables. Johnny brushed aside the magical floating notes dancing in the air as he picked up a single sheet of music.
"I believe it was this song that Satoshi was singing," Professor Johnny said, and handed the sheet to Jun.
It looked like a regular sheet music, and the title of the song read:
"Song For Me"
"A song by one of the Five Vocal Wizards," Professor Johnny stated.
"Seriously?!" Sho, Aiba, and Nino said, shocked. Jun looked confused.
"I believe what poor Satoshi heard was the calling of the Vocal Wizard's Talisman."
"Seriously?!" This time, Jun joined in.
"How can that be?!" Sho said, completely shocked. "The Talismans of the Vocal Wizards are rare and suppose to bring any man or wizard into madness with its power."
"Yes. Any man or wizard except the perfect suitor," Professor Johnny explained. "The Vocal Wizards believed that they will have a second coming. And one day the perfect suitor able to carry their power will appear. The legend tells of a stranger that defeated the Vocal Wizards and sealed their powers in five talismans. The last to survive prophesied they will return. Their talismans hold their voice, and their voice draws only those who can hear it."
Jun saw a concern frown grew on Johnny's brow.
"The day I first heard Satoshi's raw voice at the Owlery, I knew it was beyond anything I've heard. Did I knew he was the perfect suitor for one of the Vocal Wizards? No. I offered him to take UtaMahou classes early simply because I believe he is the start of something great."
"You boys must have felt the same thing when you first met him," Professor Johnny smiled.
Jun couldn't help but agree. He grew to like Ohno a lot. And if it wasn't for Ohno, Jun would have never got to be friends to Sho, or Aiba, or even Nino. A quiet smile spread across the boys' faces.
"So wait," Nino said. "You're saying that Ohno...is a second coming of the Vocal Wizards?"
Professor Johnny didn't say a word, but the look on his face was clear.
"That means the myth...the legend is true!" Nino said, his mouth hanging open.
"But what if all five of them reunite again?" Aiba said, suddenly looking worried. "The prophecy said that they will take this world by storm. Does that mean when all five of them come together...Ohno will..."
Jun felt his heart drop. 'What's going to happen to Ohno?'
"I don't know what fate awaits Satoshi," Professor Johnny said, lowering his head.
A cold chill shivered down Jun's spine. He remembered the voice that Ohno spoke when he was a blue angel-a voice that lived more than a thousand years.
"I don't get it though," Sho said, getting frustrated. "Why is Ohno a perfect suitor? Is it because of his voice?"
"It's the only way," Professor Johnny nodded. "Or perhaps...his character is suitable too. Perhaps his body type is a perfect replica of the original Vocal Wizard, the Singer of Water. The variables are endless."
"What I don't get was how he transformed into that blue being," Aiba said, rubbing his chin. "What did he do to that Water Talisman?"
"I would speculate that he swallowed it," Professor Johnny said.
"But it was the size of my palm," Jun pointed out.
"It's not food, Jun," Professor Johnny chuckled. "A magical talisman doesn't need to fit your esophagus. Especially if that talisman was meant to emerge with you."
Jun nodded.
"Professor, what's gonna happen to Ohno now?" Aiba asked, again.
The boys looked up at Professor Johnny with worried looks. Johnny turned his back to them, and Jun could see his shoulders dropped with exhaustion. But then Johnny faced them with a calm smile on his face.
"Your friend will be fine..." Professor Johnny said, his smile slowly fading, "for now."
"For now?" Nino repeated, tightening his fist.
"He will be his usual self, but I won''t guarantee a normal life," Professor Johnny explained. "When he wakes up, we'll know."
Jun never felt so worried in his life. He side-glanced at his friends and saw Nino fighting back tears.
"Get some rest boys. You can see Satoshi in the morning," Professor Johnny said, and sat back on his chair.
The boys made their way to the door, but Jun turned to look at the Headmaster again. Jun was surprised that Professor Johnny stared right back at Jun, but it was a look of fear. Jun quickly closed the door, hoping that he would forget what he saw...
* * *
Jun and the others never left Ohno's side that morning. Sho didn't even bother going to his class for his test. Word got out that Ohno Satoshi was in the hospital wing, but no one knew why. Occasionally, a friend of Ohno would drop by and leave a gift, flowers, or get-well cards. But Sho, Aiba, Nino, and Jun never left the hospital wing except when Madam Pomfrey said it was too late at night for them to stay.
For all Jun knew, Ohno could just be sleeping peacefully. Only this sleep lasted for two weeks already. However, no one would bother them about their school work. Not even Sho. Sometimes, Ikuta Toma or Inoue Mao would bring assignments for Sho, but he would tell them to leave.
"Not now, okay," Sho said, kindly pushing them away.
"Ok, Sakurai-kun," Toma said, glancing sadly at Ohno.
Jun couldn't help but feel jealous that Sho was so popular. But then Jun respected Sho like a brother. He admired Sho for his hard work, and now Sho's number one priority is seeing Ohno wake up, just like the rest of them. Most of the time, Jun found himself staring at Sho more than Ohno.
Then, on a Saturday afternoon, the boys sat around Ohno as usual when Aiba noticed something strange.
"You guys...look," Aiba gasped, pointing at the glass of water on the bedside table.
The water rippled on its own as if someone stirred it. Jun glanced down at Ohno and saw his finger twitched. The water in the glass slowly floated in midair. They had their mouths hanging open.
"Ohno!" Jun said, leaning in close to his ear. "Wake up, Ohno!"
"Oh-chan!" Nino cried.
"Can you hear us?" Aiba pleaded.
"Please wake up!" Sho yelled.
The boys watched with joy as Ohno's eyelids slowly opened.
"You guys..." Ohno croaked.
"Oh-chan!"
"Satoshi!"
"...are so noisy," Ohno finished.
At that moment, all four boys crashed on top of Ohno with tears falling non-stop. They thought they would never pull apart until Ohno laughed.
"You guys, I can't breathe."
"Thank god...Oh-chan," Nino said, whipping a tear. Jun swallowed, but his throat felt tight.
"Come on, you guys. Stop crying," Ohno said, like a father disciplining his children.
The next week, Ohno slowly gained his strength back. Sho, Aiba, Nino, and Jun were able to go back to class with ease on their minds. Numerous of professors talked with Ohno including Professor Johnny about what happen that night in the lake. One time when Jun headed to visit Ohno from lunch, he saw Naruse talking with Ohno, but it was the usual "I sent word to your parents" and "Thanks, Uncle."
Jun watched Naruse leave the hospital wing and noticed that he looked relieved as much as them. Jun couldn't help but smile and think that Naruse Ryo is actual a good uncle but a devil as a professor.
"How do you feel? Better?" Sho asked in the middle of March. All four of them gathered around Ohno.
"I feel fine, but maybe some water..." Ohno mumbled.
"Sure thing," Aiba said, reaching for the glass of water on the bedside table.
"That's okay. I got it," Ohno said.
Ohno lifted his hand, and the water in the glass followed in suit. Ohno simply twirled his hand, and the water floated straight towards his mouth. The boys watched in shocked even though they were wizards.
"H-How did you do that?" Nino gasped.
"You don't even have your wand with you!" Jun pointed out.
"I...I don't know how to explain," Ohno confessed. "But it's something as normal as breathing. I discovered it one night when I was thirsty. I still wasn't able to move very much. I saw the glass and just jerked my hand and...it followed my every move."
"Is it because of that Talisman?" Sho asked.
"That teardrop thing we found at the ship?" Ohno said, scratching his head. "I guess so."
"Do you remember what happened after we escaped the ship?" Nino asked.
"Yeah," Ohno nodded. Jun gulped. "It was weird...I felt...everything around me."
"What?"
"When we got out of the ship, I saw the Giant Squid right behind us, and I don't know what I was thinking but...I just took the Talisman thingy and...ate it."
"Then?"
"The Giant Squid was about to eat you guys so I tried to use a sonic boom at it," Ohno continued. "I screamed 'No.' But then...I felt this power flowing through me. I could feel every living thing around me. I felt life."
"You changed into something," Jun explained. "You were different. You were glowing blue. And your hair, your eyes and your voice was different too."
"I knew I was different. I could see you guys, but it was like looking through a window. Like something was inside me."
"That Talisman," Sho said, staring at Ohno's chest. "It's still in you."
Ohno placed his hand over his chest as if trying to feel something besides his heart beat. Then, Ohno clutched his fist.
"I feel fine," Ohno said, staring down at his hands. "I am myself, but...I know there's something inside me with this...power."
"Ohno?" Nino said, staring at Ohno with a worried look.
"I want to test it," Ohno blurted out.
"What do you mean?" Jun asked, seeing a twinkle in Ohno's eyes.
"I know you're gonna yell at me for this but...when I'm better, I want to test this power at the lake again," Ohno said. Even though he sat on his bed, he bowed his head as low as he could. "Please!"
Jun didn't know what to say and neither did Sho, Aiba, or Nino. Too many times did Ohno fainted from overworking or over-singing himself. Too many times did they worry over Ohno.
No way will they let Ohno risk his health again.
"Just this once," Sho agreed.
"Eh!?!" Aiba, Nino, and Jun gawked at the Ravenclaw.
"I want to see this...power you say," Sho said, crossing his arms and not taking his eyes off Ohno's surprised look. "If what the legend says is true...and you really did became the Singer of Water...I want to see it."
"Sho-kun!" Ohno smiled, and hugged Sho tightly.
"But if you show any sign of fainting, you're heading back to the hospital wing in a heart beat!" Sho added, like a mother.
"Yes, of course! No problem!" Ohno nodded. "Thank you, Sho!"
The four boys left the hospital together since Madam Pomfrey yelled at them to leave again. Sho and Aiba headed for a quick bite in the Great Hall, but Jun felt tired and headed up the stairs towards his common room. Then, he felt someone grabbed his arm.
"I want to talk to you," Nino said, staring at Jun without flinching and dragged him down the corridors until they found an empty classroom.
"Ninomiya, what-" Jun said, completely taken aback.
"Matsujun, I need an answer," Nino confessed. "And why do you still call me Ninomiya."
"Why do you call me Matsujun?"
"Answer me!" Nino said, glaring.
Jun gulped. Yes, Jun had been ignoring Nino for some time. Mainly because he wanted to forget what happened in the lake when Jun nearly ran out of breath. But Nino gave the breath of life for him...a kiss of life...
Jun admitted that Nino's lips were soft and inviting. And since it wasn't the first time, he didn't hate it. But Jun didn't want to think he turned gay. He was very confused the past few weeks.
"I...I don't have an answer," Jun sighed.
"I won't buy that," Nino said, walking closer to Jun. "What are your thoughts?"
"I..." Jun said, racking his brain. "I...uh, um. Well...I-I"
"I get it," Nino said, closing his eyes and turning away. "It's Sho, isn't it?"
"Eh?!"
"I see the way you look at him," Nino said, facing Jun. "You admire him. I know that kinda look. You actually like Sho."
Jun was blown away. Sure, he likes Sho as a brother, but how Nino puts it...
"I think you've misunderstood, Nino," Jun said. "I'm not gay. I like Sho as a friend."
"So you think," Nino said. He rested his hand on Jun's shoulder and whispered close to his ear. "But I see your eyes traveling up and down."
Nino left the room, leaving Jun completely at a daze.
'Am I really attracted to...Sho?!' Jun wondered.
* * *
It wasn't until the next three days when Ohno was allowed to leave the hospital wing. Madam Pomfrey made such a fuss that he still wasn't healed. But Jun thought that Madam Pomfrey was just a lonely woman without children.
The boys decided to try going down the lake at night again to avoid anyone noticing. It was a comfortable night even for the middle of March. The boys walked down the lake and waited for Ohno to do something.
"You're sure about this, Ohno?" Aiba asked, clearly worried as they were.
Ohno just smiled. "It's okay. Trust me."
"Last time you said that, you were in the hospital wing for half a month," Jun mumbled. Nino snickered.
"Okay, here I go," Ohno said. "Oh, I'm going to sing UtaMahou."
"Seriously?" Sho said, looking unsure.
"It's alright. I won't hurt you," Ohno said, taking his shoes and socks off. "I want you guys to listen this time."
Ohno took a deep breath and stared at the edge of the lake. The night suddenly turned quiet as if all the insects and birds wanted to listen as well. Then, Jun heard a soft melody coming from Ohno- a humming sound.
Ohno continued to hum his song, and he took his first step on the water. The boys watched in awe as Ohno walked on the very surface of the lake. Jun watched Ohno walked out farther away; he listened to Ohno singing "Song For Me."
'It's so...calming,' Jun thought. 'And yet...I can feel a sense of yearning...someone longing to love.'
Ohno turned around, and before their very eyes, he started to dance.
"So I dream on, Kitto!"
"Wow," Jun gasped.
The water followed Ohno's movements. Jun and the others were transfixed on the spot. Ohno glided smoothly across the water, singing with all his soul, and the water magically shadowed his footsteps. He spun a great whirlpool of water and surrounded him, but Ohno wasn't getting wet at all.
"Shizuka no naka de. Itsuka no melody!"
"Amazing..." Nino whispered, watching the water fan out like Ohno was an swan.
"The water is under his control," Sho said.
Ohno would thrust his arm out, and a stream of water would jet out like a bullet. He would bring his hands together, and a wall of water would protect him.
"So this was what the Vocal Wizard was like," Sho said, his mouth still agape. "They have the power to control the Five Elements."
"So our Ohno Satoshi is the element Water," Aiba said.
"His moves are sharp, even if it's not the full DansuMahou. His magic voice is good enough," Nino said. "If he practices...the water looks deadly."
"You don't think that's how the Vocal Wizards...killed people?" Aiba whispered, seeing Ohno punch another jet of water.
"Kill, enchant, manipulate. The Vocal Wizards did it all," Sho said. Even though the song made their bodies feel intoxicated, Jun's thoughts were somewhere else.
"Satoshi is not a killer," Jun stated. "He is our friend. And even if he intends to use his new powers, it'll be for the greater good."
"I trust Ohno," Nino agreed. "I will not allow Ohno be consume by his new abilities for evil. He is still the same Ohno."
The boys continued to watch Ohno's UtaMahou performance. Then, Jun felt a tug of love in Ohno's words. What is love? What makes us yearn for someone to love us? Jun side-glanced at Sho who was smiling at Ohno.
'I like Sho. I do...but do I love him?' Jun thought to himself.
Ohno stopped singing. He slowly walked back towards them with a huge grin on his face. The boys applauded for him politely, and Ohno bowed like a performer.
"You're amazing Ohno!" Aiba smiled the brightest smile ever.
"I knew you were talented," Nino said, wrapping his arm around him.
"I can't believe it myself," Sho smiled.
Jun just continued to clap.
"Thanks, you guys," Ohno said, looking a little teary.
"This summer my family is having a trip to Hawaii," Sho brought up."I want you guys to come if you're free."
"Wow really!"
"Hawaii, baby!"
"I want to try surfing! Maybe with my new powers I can."
"Count me in!"
"This is gonna be great, you guys," Sho smiled. "I can tell this is the start of something great."
'Me too,' Jun thought.
Together, the five friends walked back toward the castle. They had their arms linked over each other's shoulders. They laughed and tried to sing Ohno's song, and they didn't care if it was late at night. They were friends to the end.
Jun glanced over his shoulder and stared at the lake. His smile lessened as he watched the lake sparkle. A dark thought haunted his mind for only a second...
'Why can't I be powerful?'
