Here is what I did:

I demoted myself from a full-time salaried employee to a part-time employee.

Nice. The best thing to buy with a job is more time.

I've been around, just lurking. :p

I'm still in Seattle, and that's pretty fun. I went to PAX again and got the PAXflu, but it was still totally worth it. I hang out with a lot of the old #beyond people a couple times a month.

I'm still working for the same startup, and that's going pretty well. I got a big raise, I'm back to regular paychecks, I'm working 40-50 hours instead of something insane like 80, and I have full technical control over the latest project, which is really nice.

Now that I have time outside of work, I'm looking at setting up a website and kicking around ideas for a personal project.

Now, I'm going to say that I think you're completely insane, but, keep in mind that this is coming from me.
That's a compliment and a badge of honor coming from me.

The world needs more people who are willing to do seemingly completely insane things in order to follow their dreams; more people willing to jump off the ledge and hope to all that is holy that they can fly.

So, I applaud your insanity and I wish you all the best. Sure, a few of us are crazy enough to do what you're doing, but I'm sure you're talented enough to succeed.

So, are they actually paying you by the hour, now?

Yup. And they're paying less than the equivalent $/hr I was making while salaried, so it was a reduction in both time and money. it's still enough to get by on -- I won't be bankrupting myself any time soon -- but at least now when I stay for 10hrs, I'll actually get paid for it.

I know other people groan when they hear this, but I want to be a novelist.

You know what? I think that's great! I think a lot of people felt and still feel that way about RedStar, but really, what's wrong with shooting for your dream job?
