Why I'm against speed cameras.

Today, I went to a neighborhood meeting about the possibility of installing speed humps on the street I live on. This was, for the most part, a pretty useful affair, but as was sure to happen, there was one person there being obtuse to a darned near malicious level. I agree with all of your points but one: Knowing that a speed camera is in a certain location is DEFINITELY a deterrent for me speeding. In the past few weeks speed cameras have been added on 197 and 450 near my home. One is 40mph, one is 30mph (which, for a four lane, median-divided road is absolutely ridiculous). Since the installation of the cameras I have made darn sure I do not go any more than 10mph over the speed limits (the threshold for getting tagged). Getting one fine of $40 would not be a deterrent, but since I travel these roads nearly every day, I am not about to whip out my checkbook on a daily basis to subsidize my overactive right foot.

Since they installed speed cameras on that stretch of 450, I no longer visit businesses over there. Which, I suppose, is kinda like deterring me from speeding...
