Papayas, Raspberries and Kara
Kara had been living in the Batcave for the past week and her eyes still hadn’t adjusted completely to the dark. The dim light of the Red Sun Lamps that hung low over her head did very little to help. She squinted in gloom of the training room and strained her ears to hear.
It was odd to have to focus on listening. Usually she had to focus on not listening. Doing it the other way was hard and slightly distracting. It made it difficult for her to focus on her other senses like sight, touch and smell.
Not that any of those would do her much good right now.
Tension ran high and tingled through her body as she tried to focus and prepare herself for the attack she knew could come at any moment. Her mind was almost as tired as her body as it strained along with the rest of her to zero in on any hint that one of the Bats had slipped into the training section of the Cave and was about attack her.
They had been taking turns all week, they let her sit and wait before they pounced and attacked her without mercy. They were under orders to never pull a punch or hesitate for an instant. While the Bat family may be well known for being obstinate and emotionally distant, it was never said that they couldn’t follow orders.
Dick had sprained her ankle with a particularly hard throw. Tim had given her bruises all up her back and sides with his bo. Damian had punched her so hard in the face that she was bruised and still slightly dazed. Batgirl had used a vicious lock on her left arm and it still ached from the strain and pull on the joints and ligaments.
The only one that was left was Batman. He would be the worst.
Despite her bruises and aches, despite her fatigue and straining muscles, despite her worry and desperation, she waited, silently and at the ready, for Bruce to come.

Cassie keyed opened the door to the apartment she shared with Kara and felt her heart sink when all she was met with was silence. Kara had been gone for a little over a week now and Cassie was beyond lonely. Kara had insisted she needed to learn to protect herself if she ever lost her powers and that the Bats were the best people to train her. Cassie had agreed but she hadn’t realized the training would take quite so long.
She had taken to calling Tim almost every night for a status report.
Cassie sighed heavily and dropped her keys into the basket by the door. The apartment felt so empty without Kara. Kara had a way of filling up space in the best possible way. She was always playing music or listening to the news stations or the police band for tips for her news stories. Either that or she was laughing or scolding Cassie about something.
It wasn’t just the noise that Cassie appreciated either. It was the also the smell. Kara used a wide variety of different soaps and creams and perfumes. The apartment never smelled the same from one day to the next but the different smells all had an undertone of Kara to them that Cassie loved. They made her want to lick Kara behind the ear just so she could have an excuse to smell her neck and hair.
Kara just seemed to make their apartment feel like home rather than just a place to eat and sleep at night. Without her there, Cassie felt homesick and lonely.
Cassie toed off her shoes and kicked them in the general direction of the shoe shelf near the door before walking further into the apartment, resigning herself to another night of loneliness and peanut butter sandwiches.
She had her shirt off and was unhooking her bra when she walked into the bedroom and stopped short. Kara was in their bed, the covers pulled up over her head to drown out the late afternoon sun was that pouring through their west facing window. Cassie paused in confusion.
Kara’s shoes weren’t by the door. The house didn’t smell like her and the whole place was dead quiet.
Something was up.
She dropped her bra to the floor and made her way cautiously over to the bed. She sat down carefully and reached for the edge of the blanket. Cassie pulled it down to reveal a mass of dirty knotted blond hair and a bruised face.
Cassie’s stomach dropped out at the sight.
“Kara, are you alright?” she asked softly but her voice was tight with concern.
Kara just groaned.
“I spent the last week learning that just because something is in your best interest doesn’t mean it’s a good idea,” Kara groaned and buried her face into her pillow.
“Bat’s did a number on you, huh?” Cassie asked.
“Even the little one! What’s he? Ten? The kid punched me in the face!” Kara said indignantly and Cassie couldn’t help but smile.
“You got beat up by a ten year old?” Cassie teased and Kara glared at her through the tangle of her hair.
“He’s a vicious little ten year old,” Kara replied defensively.
Cassie laughed but was prevented from answering when he phone rang. She checked the caller ID and flicked the phone open when she saw Tim’s name.
“You beat up my girlfriend!” she shouted into the phone and winked at Kara.
“Yeah, sorry about that. It’s actually why I called. She’s going to be pretty sore for a few days. Tell her to take a hot bath and give her a few pain killers. She’ll be better by tomorrow,” Tim said.
Cassie thanked Tim, told him if he ever hit Kara again she would make him a very sorry man and signed off for the night.
“Tim said you should take a bath,” Cassie told Kara and Kara groaned.
“He told me the same thing, only when I got home it hurt too much to get my clothes off.”
Cassie lifted and eye brow and pulled the covers down off of Kara. She was still wearing her gym shorts, sweat stained tank top and sneakers.
“Woah, that bad?” Cassie asked, sympathetically.
“Worse,” Kara said. “I got hit in the head so many times that I have this killer head ache and that stupid light from the stupid windows is making it worse,” Kara moaned and tried lamely to pull one of their plethora of pillows over her head.
Cassie grabbed the pillow obligingly and plopped it down on Kara’s face.
“I’ll be right back,” she informed Kara and went into the bathroom.
Cassie grabbed a bottle of papaya scented bubble bath, plugged the tub and flicked on the taps as hot as they would go. Then she went into the kitchen, grabbed a few candles and brought them back into the bathroom, lighting them and setting them on the counter top. She flicked off the bathroom lights and let the tub fill as she exited the bathroom and went to find Kara again.
Kara hadn’t moved and it took a lot of time and convincing to coax Kara out of her clothes. As it was, Cassie had to carry her into the bathroom because of her sprained ankle. When she finally got Kara into the tub and flicked the taps off, Cassie slipped out of her skirt and pantyhose before climbing into the tub behind Kara.
Kara sighed contentedly as Cassie wrapped her arms around her from behind.
“I think I forgive Tim,” Kara said sleepily.
“But not Damian?” Cassie teased and Kara smiled.
“No, not Damian. I’m going make that kid pay,” Kara said happily and Cassie laughed.
Cassie used to her hands to dampen Kara’s tangled hair and reached for the shampoo. Kara made soft contented noises as Cassie scrubbed and rinsed the dirty strands before adding conditioner to release all the tangles. Cassie reached for the loofah next, running it gently over bruises and sore muscles, skirting whatever cuts and abrasions that Kara had.
Kara leaned into the touch as much as she could given her tender muscles. When Cassie finished and moved to put the loofah away, Kara pressed a soft, grateful kiss to the inside of Cassie’s bicep.
“Thank you,” Kara said softly as Cassie settled back into the tub, pulling Kara close again.
Cassie just hummed in response and kissed Kara on the top of her head.
The candles flickered on the counter tops and steam rose lazily in the cool bathroom air as Cassie and Kara relaxed in the hot soapy water. They let the tension they had both been carrying over the past week melt away into the hot suds. The scent of Kara’s raspberry shampoo mixed with the papaya bubble bath and Kara’s own unique scent and Cassie sighed contentedly. Kara was home and safe and all was right with the world.
