And the Oscars go to....
About half the people who actually deserved one.
Natalie Portman, Colin Firth, Aaron Sorkin, David Seidler...these are talented people.
Melissa Leo, you did not impress me. Your voice in the movie annoyed me to no end and your Everlasting Speech made me start rooting for the orchestra pit. Ironically, even when I tell them they SHOULD play, they still don't listen to me. Also...why were you using Kirk Douglas's cane? Did I miss something? Also, also...your dress looked like a doily.
Clearly, these awards are not based on class at all since Hailee Steinfeld was left sitting in the audience when the winner was announced.
I love you, Christian Bale. My love for you is the only reason I was not shaking my fist at the screen when Geoffrey Rush did not win. Please tell me that beard is for an upcoming role.
My disappointment over HTTYD not winning Best Animated Feature was fleeting compared to my absolute rage when it lost Best Score. GDIAF, Academy. All of you suck. Yes, I'm still fuming over that one.
Rage not helped by Randy Newman winning for Best Song. Really? Now, I have nothing against Randy Newman. But 'I See The Light' is one of the most romantic songs I've heard in a while. The orchestration is beautifully simple, the words fit the characters so well, and Mandy Moore/Zachary Levi sound so good together. I will cop to being more than a little tired of the fanaticism surrounding Toy Story 3. There were a lot of good animated movies this year. Pixar isn't cornering the market anymore. Let it go, people.
I was cheered by the fact that every time someone won an Oscar for Inception, they made sure to mention Christopher Nolan. I had the urge to giggle every time it happened. Someday, the Academy is just really not going to have a choice in recognizing him. They'll look even stupider than they did this time around.
Natalie Portman looked beautiful in a dress that I FINALLY really liked. And she didn't seem nearly as rambly as she did at the Globes. She gave a lovely speech and I can't wait until she gets her next Oscar so I can watch her do it again. :-)
Colin Firth was adorable. I dearly wish he would've broken into a dance on the stage. Words can't describe the relief I felt when his name was read....and then 'The King's Speech' was read. So, SO happy. Bite me, 'Social Network'.
Now....the extra stuff. Several online articles have gone on and on about how Anne Hathaway and James Franco were horrible and I'm totally confused by the hate. I mean, James Franco kind of seemed stoned through most of it. But I enjoyed Anne Hathaway, even when she was a bit too overenthusiastic. I honestly think that's just kind of how she is. She's always struck me as quirky and outgoing. It's part of her charm. But what's up with all the 'Worst Hosting Ever' diatribes? Is David Letterman to be forgotten so soon?
I wish I could forget him. Every week night, I pray for selective amnesia regarding David Letterman.
If there really does have to be two Oscar hosts, then why not Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman? Then I get to look at Anne's stunning dresses and Hugh's stunning....everything. It's a win-win situation.
I really enjoyed Kirk Douglas. He was so funny with Anne Hathaway and the whole 'Y'know' bit to stall before announcing the winner just seemed like 'Yeah, I'm Kirk Douglas. I do what I want.'. You're so awesome, Mr. Douglas.
Having Billy Crystal on the stage for a few minutes just made me want him back permanently. PLEASE COME BACK, BILLY!!!!!
OMG. A Trojan commercial just came on tv. They're actually showing those at this time of night?
Sorry. Getting back on track...
Can I just say that I vote for the next Twilight movie to be entirely in auto-tune? 'Cause that was freakin' brilliant. Antoine Dodson could totally do a cameo or something.
I made several inappropriate jokes about Hilary Swank actually being a man. It's sort of a tradition. In the sense that it annoys my mom, but makes her laugh at the same time.
I love traditions.
One thing I'm grateful for. I didn't have to listen to any sanctimonious political speeches. I don't care who's in office, I don't care what the state of the country is. When I watch the Academy Awards, I don't want to hear the political opinions of celebrities. It's crass and it's off-putting. The only person that said anything this year was the winner for Documentary. I gave him a pass because he was referring to the actual subject of his documentary. That's more than acceptable.
Halfway through, I kinda wished Ricky Gervais would show up and just talk about Charlie Sheen for five minutes. Just to shake everyone up.
Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law should just go everywhere together. It would make the world a better place.
And in celebration of the Academy Awards, I leave you with this video. Because it's awesome. I loved True Grit and I really enjoyed Jeff Bridges in it. But....this is just too good.
