Why is it that I get a ton of compliments on a $6 costume jewlery necklace with missing rhinestones, and very few compliments on my stunningly gorgeous precious-stone precious-metal $800 super-special christmas present necklace?

because everyone EXPECTS the $800 one to look amazing but they're all surprised when a gas-station impulse buy actually looks decent.

or maybe it's because when you wore the $6 necklace, you weren't wearing anything else.
